Who out on the porch has actually found "the one?"

I got a Buck 309 Companion in basic Black Valox. I have had many I claimed as "The One", but this might actually be it. I put most everything else away for a while, keeping my Buck 300 series and a Custom shop 501 out. I'm trying to see, in my downsizing mode, if I can cut some stuff loose.

Right now my "One" is a black box Winchester Hawbaker Muskrat. I'm pretty fickle though. --KV

I prefer to only carry 1 knife, not a rotation of EDC. This is "the one" that I settled on to be my main carry, unless it fails me or I find something better (over 4 years now and this is still in my pocket every day).

For a collection, not to be carried. This is definitely "the one". It is the centerpiece of my Tuna Valley collection. Original 1906 Tuna Valley, 1 of 600, made in Germany, imported and sold through Case, and one of only a handful known to still exist.

To quote Dan Savage, there is no "One." Just the ".75 that you round up to One." My .75 right now is the copper frame Mercator from Otter Messer.

The GEC 15 is my favorite knife frame of all time. That might be the tightest I can narrow it down. For some days I might need a Crown Lifter and other days, I want to carry a 2 blade TC. I do generally prefer 2 blades just for the versatility and little added weight/bulk.

How do you like the 420hc that they use?

I have been thinking hard about this particular model, but I tend to like carbon steels, or a higher wear resistant stainless.

Thanks and sorry for the slight derail.

I guess "the one" for me is the Alox Cadet. In addition to the SAK, I still carry a Barlow, or a stockman, or maybe my Sebenza 25; but the Cadet is always in my left front pocket. It's just so useful, slim & lightweight that there's no real reason not to have it along wherever I go.

You pose a good question and I can't say that I am in a position to really know yet. I am still largely getting a feel for styles and features that I like in my traditional knives, like blade shapes for instance. My two most carried knives out of my very modest collection are my #35 and #71, I love the spear blade on the #35 and the #71 is just a wonderful working man's knife that is unapologetically simple and somewhat drab, yet functionally is top notch.

That being said, I like the heft and feel of the 2-blade #53, yet I found that I only really use 1 blade, primarily the sheepsfoot. So I think I still prefer the single blade styles (a carryover perhaps, from my more modern carries). As a result, I am rather excited about the upcoming run of #54's and have preordered a single spear blade variant. This potentially could end up being "the one", a single blade design, spear blade which I already know I like, and it is on a larger frame like the #53. I also am excited to have the opportunity to acquire this year's forum knife. A single sheepsfoot blade TC Barlow, with micarta scales. It would potentially be my first Barlow, which is a style I have always found to be aesthetically pleasing but have never really handled, so the jury could still be out in that regards....

In terms of handle materials, I know what I find pleasing to my eye: Red bone, black woods, canvas micarta, and dark horn.

I guess in the end, I really do not know what "the one" for me really is quite yet. Hopefully I will know once I find it. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the ones I have and maintain the eagerness to try others in the not so distant future.

I'll never have the "one" but I do have the two. After a lifetime of use, I've found that I always have or return to the stockman and SAK. These two do everything I need in a pocket knife. After my last downsize, they are about all I have left.

I have found lots of "the ones." There's four of them on my desk right now, and who knows how many in the desk drawers...

Like jc57 I have found "the one" more than once. My first GEC, a 55 with blood red handle was then and is still, the one. Others would include a Tidioute farm boy in antique yellow, a gorgeous cocobolo white owl, my most carried a Vic soldier and so on. For me there have been several first, all highly favored, all for different reasons. This may be one of the reasons I enjoy the hobby.

Recently in my continuing search for the one I experienced something I found interesting. It happened when I was revisiting a GEC 35 that I have had for a while. Suddenly that Dover became elevated to the one. In an instant I was absolutely enamored with everything about it. I don't know how I missed it before but it's wonderful having a new favorite ... what a knife!!!

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO !!!

Most of the knives I've purchased have been with the thought that, "this is the one!". That sentiment lasts for awhile then I find another "one". Thank the Lord I'm not as fickle when it comes to other things in my life.

Right now and for the last four months, this is the "one". I know the regulars see this one in their sleep, I've posted it so many times.

There's a few reasons that this has "one" status right now.
1- John Lloyd is a fine maker and has been very generous to this forum.
2- Stag is by far my favorite handle and this stag is just wonderful. The clip blade (my favorite) steel is CPM-154 which is one of my favorites, and it's also made right here in Syracuse by folks I used to do business with (Crucible Industries).
3- I like the length. I like the shadow trapper pattern. The single blade and the fact that the stag is so well hafted makes it slim and easy to carry.
3- I didn't pay a huge sum for this handmade knife on the secondary market so I can put it in my pocket and use it without worrying to much.

The "one" could change in a moment but at least there's some logic behind my fascination with the current "one". ;)

I like how it holds an edge really well. It's a bear to sharpen though, althoughI'm not great at sharpening in general.

I don't really consider it to be "the one" because I never carry it by itself, but an alox Cadet (in numerous different colors) is always in my pocket. Usually paired with a large stockman, but occasionally a two-blade jack or even a single blade.

At home it tends to vary, but with a 2 1/2" blade length restriction at work, I carry a Case canoe almost all the time. A GEC 79 was a co-favorite but I wound up selling it.

I've given up trying to find "the one" in terms of folders. I still search for something I like better with fixed blades. But I doubt seriously that I will find it and it just becomes the flavor of the month

In terms of use, the one that I always fall back on is a Victorinox Adventurer with the side lock. But I do occasionally carry something different just for a little variety.

Carrying the #38 GEC Farmer Jack for some weeks now:
very useful blade combination, fantastic fit and finish and a good snap!
Just feels right in the hands and in the poket, feels like it is "the one" for me:).
Even though it's still fun to browse through the threads;).

Unless I missed it, I can't believe no one has said it...

There can be only One!

Seriously though, it's hard to find faults in proven traditional designs like trappers. All I know is I need to bump a TC or two to the top of my wish list.

This isn't "the one" but it's as close as I've gotten to finding it. And it's probably not the one you think.
