Who would you ride with? What would you carry?

I've been reading a LOT of Louis L'Amour westerns recently - which got me thinking about starting a thread.

Which Fictional Character (Books, Movies, TV Shows whatever) Would you like to accompany?

What Traditional Folder would you bring?

What Traditional Fixed Blade would you bring?

What Rifle would you carry?

What Sidearms would you carry?

Rules: aren't that strict if your traditional blades don't quite fit the era, ok by me.

I'd like to ride with Print Ritter ;Robert Duvall's character in AMC's Broken Trail - Duvall always plays a great cowboy - this one is as good as it comes. (Honorable mention to L'Amour's Chick Bowdrie the Texas Ranger)

Would carry my GEC Cattleman pattern in cobblestone bone (or that era's equivalent)

Fixed blade would be my BRKT Canadian Camp Knife

Sharps rifle in .45-110 for me.

and a Schofield New Model Russian as my pistol.

What say you?

Winchester 86 in 45-70 and a Colt SAA 45 Long Colt and a BRKT Boon.

Tell Sackett

Colt SAA and Winchester both in .44-40 with a good solid sodbuster folder and crown stag handled fixed blade.

Sorry to go a little off topic here, guys. But I've never read any Louis L'Amour. If you had to recommend five of his books, which would they be? I'd like to delve in. Feel free to private message me. Thanks, pardners.

Rooster Cogburn if I understand right his character was loosely based on Heck Thomas. Two Colt SAAs both blued one 4 3/4" and the other 7 1/2" and a Win. 1892 in .44WCF my Queen Cattleknife and a stacked leather handle frontier knife like an old Marbles Ideal #5.

I would like ride with the men of the Hat Creek Cattle Company, Augustus 'Gus' McCrae and Woodrow F. Call. I would carry a 1847 Colt Walker .44 and Henry 1860 .44 Rimfire or Sharps .45-70. A 2 bladed folding jack knife of the era and a traditional 5-6 inch blade with a clip point.

I saw Lonesome Dove for the umpteenth time, over the weekend, Captain Call didn't seem to be the luckiest person to ride with ;). Didn't read the book, but I liked what Gus carried. I found two hardcover collections of Louis L'Amour stories at the Goodwill. I liked what Chick Bowdrie was carrying.

For today, a Ruger Vaquero, Marlin guide gun, a Queen stockman, small hatchet and a custom fixed blade. Scott Gossman made a neat reproduction of a Green River skinner a couple months ago.

There are far to many of the ol characters I would like to ride and share a camp fire with, to choose just one.
But the guns of choice would be a Winchester 86 in 50-110, Colt SAA in 45 Colt.
Gotta give the knives a little more thought :D

Interesting question though. Especially for those of us that feel we were born about 150 years to late :(

That .50-110 would be shoulder bruiser!

Like I said I've been reading and watching tons of westerns recent.

My favorite nonSackett L'Amour books...

Crossfire Trail
The Ferguson Rifle
any of the Bowdrie series.

Just a guess as I wasn't around then, but back in the olden days, men probably weren't worried about recoil. They didn't have all the magazines to read telling them that big bore guns had lots of recoil, and hurt when you shot them :D I'm a little twisted though because I like rifles that let you know when you just fired a round...

I've shot one before, and it isn't as bad as you would think. It would help a little to not have a metal butt plate though :D

Its funny that this question came up, because while I was sitting here on the 'puter, I had the classic westerns channel on the t.v

1873 Winchester rifle, with vernier folding tang sight, set trigger in 44WCF along with a Smith&Wesson Model No 3 in 44 S&W. I dearly love the Colt SAA but they are so gosh darn slow to reload!

For a knife, it would be a large single blade swell center in one pocket and Barlow with spear point blade in the other.

Be fun to ride along with the outlaw Josey Wales! Love the spitting of tobacco before all heck breaks out!

Going to go a little more modern although I like most of the choices so far.

I would have to say jackknife.
I live in the east so a 30/30 would do me maybe with a Springfield 30.06.
S&W model .41 from the 60's or 70's and maybe a Colt Woodsman from the 50's or 60's and a 70 series Gold cup would do. Why two .22's - we're goin' to do a lot of plinking.

Knives.
One of each. Anything by Tony or Ken E and a scout knife.

I would ride with any of the very large Sackett family.
for weapons it would depend on the period.
1860's to 73 it would be a 56 Spencer & 44 Remingtons
1873 TO 86 1873 Winchester S&W 44 American both periods i would also have a large Sheffield Bowie & a pocket knife

I can't say who I'd ride with. Someone of Rooster Cogburn's ilk I'd hope.

Guns: I could do very well with a large caliber revolver .44-40, .45 Long Colt and I've always had a soft spot for a 12 gauge shotgun.

Knives:

Fixed blade skinner -- 5" to 6" blade

Large (4" or better OAL closed length) 3-blade, slip-joint, Stockman or like pocket knife for everyday/mundane chores like cutting a plug of tabaccy, cutting the cork out of a whiskey bottle and opening a can of beans.

Oh, and don't forget yer strike anywhere matches!!!! How else ya gonna cook the beans.

We ride together, we die together. Bad Boys for life.

-Mike Lowery

Sorry, but Bad Boys II was on last night and your question immediately reminded me of that line.

I would love to ride with Matthew Quigley. This is the gear I'd bring.

Tony Bose spearpoint barlow with sawcut bone scales
Michael Price bowie
Colt SAA with ivory grips in .45 Colt
Winchester Model 1894 in .30-30

.56 Spencer, Colt Army .45, Tinker Made knife.
I'd like to hang out with Lance Kilkenny.

I do think it would be interesting to hang out with Nolan and Logan Sackett. They were always my favorites of the Sackett clan. Question for Louis L'Amour fans, the book "Passin' Through", does anybody else think that the main character was one of the Sackett twins?

I will skip forward just a few years and go with Sam Elliot as Capt. Bucky O'Neil in "Rough Riders"

Rifle...30/40 Krag of course
Handgun...Colt 1878 DA
Folder...likely a folding jack from Sheffield
Fixed blade...the bayonet for my Krag

Some of my favorite Louis L'Amour are his non-western titles like "The Walking Drum" and "Fair Blows the Wind". And don't forget Kilkenny when you talk characters either.

I'd love to ride with any of the characters who "would do to ride the river with."

Might not entirely be period appropriate but I'd like to have a Winchester or Marlin in .38-55 and a .44 revolver. Smith and Wesson #3 sounds good.

Probably a Barlow knife or some other beefy folder. And probably some sort of a bowie.

I'd ride with "Wind In His Hair" from Dances With Wolves.

Rifle - 1861 Springfield

Pistol - Colt .44 1860

Fixed Blade - A Confederate Stag Bowie (blessed by BRL)

Slip Joint - Pick of the litter from Waynorth's knife rolls

Osage orange bow, and one of those kick-ass lances.
