Who would you ride with? What would you carry?

Oh, how 'bout we ride a little with Jerimiah Johnson. Take a Hawken along with an 1861 Navy Colt and some form of Trapper patten pocket knife and a nice stag handle Bowie for the bigger stuff. Works for me

Al Swearengen & co. Colt Navy. Henry rifle. Queen city canoe. Any fixed blade in 1095 with a blade around 4 in. I went with Swearengen due to his tenacity(and McShane's excellent acting). I'm not fond of his trade however.

I'd ride in a horsecart with Raskolnikov. I'd carry my GEC stag Big Jac. He'd have his axe. I don't really do guns, but I've always wanted a snubnose .38...

Richard Sharpe. I'd carry a Baker Rifle a Heavy Cavalry Sabre with a french clasp knife in my belt at the small of my back.

Lt John Dunbar at the furthest most outpost, Colt SAA .44-40, Sharps .45-110, harness jack of some sort. Fun to fantasize, and actually hard to pick.

Butch Cassidy would be fun too!

I'd have to go with Billy Dixon.

I'd have loved to be at the Adobe Walls fight just to see that one shot he made. Of course I'd have to go with a 50 sharps for distance and a pair of Smith and Wesson revolvers for the close in stuff. For cutlery, I'd go with a nice Russell's barlow, and a Russell's plain jane green river pattern butcher knife.

For a fictional charater, I may have to go with Decker, the ranch hand in Legends Of The Fall. He was a wanted man, and had a mysterious past, and was a crack shot with that Sharps he had. Yet the Ludlow's sheltered him. Did a wicked number on the crooked cop that 'accidently' killed his daughter. He was smoking a Peterson pipe when he did it. Anyone who can use an old Sharps like that, appreciates a nice smoking Peterson, and didn't always agree with the law, could be an interesting guy to know and share a campfire and pot of coffee with. I'd have a nice Remington rolling block set up for Creedmore shooting for some friendly competion. In my pocket would be a large sodbuster.

My other choice would have to be Bastid. I just can't resist a good long plinking session. I love to dirty up my Smith and Wesson 617 and old Ruger standard model from when they were 39.95. For sitting on the porch whittling afterward I'll go with my old Hen and Rooster half stockman. That stag has spent about 30 years mellowing to a nice gold.

I've been reading a LOT of Louis L'Amour westerns recently - which got me thinking about starting a thread.

Which Fictional Character (Books, Movies, TV Shows whatever) Would you like to accompany?

What Traditional Folder would you bring?

What Traditional Fixed Blade would you bring?

What Rifle would you carry?

What Sidearms would you carry?

Rules: aren't that strict if your traditional blades don't quite fit the era, ok by me.

I'd like to ride with Print Ritter ;Robert Duvall's character in AMC's Broken Trail - Duvall always plays a great cowboy - this one is as good as it comes. (Honorable mention to L'Amour's Chick Bowdrie the Texas Ranger)

Would carry my GEC Cattleman pattern in cobblestone bone (or that era's equivalent)

Fixed blade would be my BRKT Canadian Camp Knife

Sharps rifle in .45-110 for me.

and a Schofield New Model Russian as my pistol.

What say you?

Sorry to go a little off topic here, guys. But I've never read any Louis L'Amour. If you had to recommend five of his books, which would they be? I'd like to delve in. Feel free to private message me. Thanks, pardners.

I read a ton of Louis L'Amour back in 1980. I was working 16-hour days 6 days a week. Sunday was my day off and I would spend it in bed reading LL stories. They all had simple plot lines and the hero always won the fight.:thumbup:

mnblade,
Though he wrote over 100 books, LL is most famous for the Sackett series. Of that series I think I liked The Daybreakers the best. Here is a list of the Sackett series:
http://www.louislamour.com/sackett/index.htm

That being said, I think I'd bring an SAK Tinker and go hang out with the Gray Lensman. (The OP did not say it had to be a Western character.)

I would have to go more modern to the future, I prefer SciFi, I would ride with Sgt Zim of Starship Troopers, with a Scout suit and Some Damascus Bowie and a Knutbuster in my pocket.

Coopers Natty Bumpo, or Hawkeye.
.50 Hawken, 2 good 'hawks, friction folder in possibles, forged bowie with antler scales.
300Bucks

I'd ride with "Wind In His Hair" from Dances With Wolves.

Rifle - 1861 Springfield

Pistol - Colt .44 1860

Fixed Blade - A Confederate Stag Bowie (blessed by BRL)

Slip Joint - Pick of the litter from Waynorth's knife rolls

Osage orange bow, and one of those kick-ass lances.

Nice choice for the slip joint Hal :D That would have to be a choice made when you have a LOT of free time

Be fun to ride along with the outlaw Josey Wales! Love the spitting of tobacco before all heck breaks out!

Ken

Jose Wales would be the second choice:thumbup:, but I would have to change guns and knives to match the civil war period. My goodness I never get sick of watching that movie!!

WAIT, STOP THE MUSIC!

I just had a thought. Dangerous, I know.

If I was going to go with a fictional charater, I may change my vote to Sherlock Holmes. Think of it; 1890's London. While not on a case, what fun could be had brousing in a knife shop for all those brand new 'old' Sheffield knives?

Before I come back, I just may have a collection like s-k's!

Maybe have a mint condition Webley pug or constable!

Come to think of it Sherlock was known to brandish a 'penknife' once or twice. Hound of the Baskervilles I think, was one instance.

Guy I'd like to ride with would be PALADIN...Rifle....Marlin 30/30.Pistol would be a DAN WESSON 357.Fixed blade would be a WILD BILL CALDWELL Bowie.
Folder would be my CHICAGO CUTLERY STOCKMAN!
Jim

Have to ride with Josey Wales-I would carry a Henry .45 cal repeater & a Colt Navy revolver-it just wouldn't be right if I wasn't carrying a big a$$ Bowie!!!:D

As much as I love the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales, I'm gonna have to go with Rooster Cogburn, partly because a lot of the folks Josey rode with didn't make it:
Josey Wales: When I get to likin' someone, they ain't around long.
Lone Watie: I notice when you get to DISlikin' someone they ain't around for long neither.

and partly because I would just carry exactly what John Wayne carried:
Colt SAA and a '92 Winchester with the big loop in the lever
For knives, I'd take a Moose and a big Bowie

It would have been fascinating to ride (and walk; they walked a lot in those days) around in 17-century Nippon with Sasaki Kojiro from Eiji Yoshikawa's famous fictionalized account of Miyamoto Mushashi. Kojiro would be a far less obvious choice than Mushashi himself, and he appeared to be an interesting fellow, as long as you stayed on his good side.

Weapons of choice? How about the "Yamaubagiri" katana by Kunihiro and a heavy aikuchi by Yoshimitsu (hey, were fantasizing here, right?) No cowardly musket, of course, and obviously no slipjoint :(, but the kozuka in my sword's sheath ought to be a pretty handy little ultility blade.

That's Kojiro on the left, and Mushashi with his boken (carved from an oar) on the right, during their famous duel on Ganryu Island:

Interesting choice. I have Yoshikawa's book in my bag at this very moment.
