Who would you ride with? What would you carry?

Great book - I've read it several times over the years. Hiroshi Inagaki's 1955 film version "The Samurai Trilogy: Musashi Miyamoto" with good ol' Toshiro Mifune is worth seeing too, especially after you've read the book.

It would have been fascinating to ride (and walk; they walked a lot in those days) around in 17-century Nippon with Sasaki Kojiro from Eiji Yoshikawa's famous fictionalized account of Miyamoto Mushashi. Kojiro would be a far less obvious choice than Mushashi himself, and he appeared to be an interesting fellow, as long as you stayed on his good side.

Weapons of choice? How about the "Yamaubagiri" katana by Kunihiro and a heavy aikuchi by Yoshimitsu (hey, were fantasizing here, right?) No cowardly musket, of course, and obviously no slipjoint :(, but the kozuka in my sword's sheath ought to be a pretty handy little ultility blade.

That's Kojiro on the left, and Mushashi with his boken (carved from an oar) on the right, during their famous duel on Ganryu Island:

Wow, I swear that took me well over a minute to read:o and I didn't ride the short bus to school, Japanese is so hard for me to read sometimes. Interesting twist, I loved the movie The Last Samurai, and have always been fascinated with Japanese culture, I guess it comes with practicing an eastern martial art for years.

I would absolutely love to go back in time with a character out of a Lois L'Amour novel. I own at least half of the western books he wrote, I bought most of them at a flea market for a dollar a piece and have been rereading them for some time now.

I would like to ride with any of the Bowdrys, Chantrys, or Sacketts.
I would like to carry a 1903 Springfield or an M1 Garand, I am pretty sure that would give me an advantage against any pesky Indians or outlaws.
I think I would also tote along a Colt SAA or two and definitely a Russell Green River Barlow. As for sheath knife, I would rather take extra ammo and trade a buffalo hunter for his Russell.

Everyone always tells me I was born in the wrong century, I would give anything to go back in time to live the life of a western hero. A land where most people still lived by morals and a mans word was better than a paper contract. A lady acted like a lady should and a man taught his sons how to be good, honest, and hard working. Elders were respected as were people of authority, and if you got into a drunken bar fight, the sheriff would let you sleep it off in a jail cell til morning with no harm done.

Would be kinda neat to tag along with Chris, Vin and the rest of the Magnificent Seven !! Colt 45, Winchester 44-40 and maybe a Tony Bose 'Zulu' slip joint in my saddle bag.
By the way - is that the best movie theme EVER!!!

If not the best, it is definitely among the best. For a lot of years, I just thought it was "The Marlboro Song"!

Only two of us like Kilkenny?

What's the world coming to.

Would be interesting to throw in a M-1 with plenty of ammo wouldn't it? Would definitely make a name for yourself with it.

John Wayne
Sharps
44 colt

I would pick a stockman pattern, of course a good fixed blade would be on the belt.

I'd ride with Kilkenny. I would like to ride with Sgt Preston too but with him being a Mountie and all, I don't know if he would put up with my bad behavior.;)

I have always thought that if I had to go back and fight in the Civil War, I would want an M1. It would be a bit unfair, but I would just hang in the back and snipe while everyone is reloading.

Most are probably worried that they might not get along with Jaime Brigo and Cain Brockman. Things don't go well if they don't like you. Brigo is pretty good with a knife.

This one is hard for me... The West and Westerns in My genre... My favorite. I am a cowboy, modern and a traditionalist... Try to live the life, or at least try to live the 'Code'. (even as over romanticized as it may be according to most 'factual' history... but even outside hollywood and books, I am a great fan of the 'Old West'.)

Hard to pick just one, so here's a few, in no particular order... just as i thought of them.

I've read and seen sooooo many westerns... Almost any L'Amour character.(I've not read all of his books, but better than half at least... so out of them.. a lot I'd ride with.)

John T chance and Dude... (Movie; Rio Bravo with Wayne and Dino((Dean Martin))..)
Cole Thorton and Mississippi...(Movie; El Dorado with Wayne and James Caan)

Monty Walsh ( movie of same name, Tom Selleck)

The Sacketts. (books or the movie) Tyrell, Tell and Orrin...
Or back a couple generations to Jubal Sackett.

Or there is Sterle and Red, would have loved to ride across the never Never with them...( Zane Grey, "Wilderness Trek")

Or Buck Dwayne, either in his outlaw days or as a Texas ranger... ("Lone Star Ranger" also by Zane Grey)

One that really tops my list would be to ride out for a spell with the Virginian (From the book.. never saw any film version of it.) To have met(and decked) Trampas and met Shorty.. And the narrator of the book, himself that is never namer in the book.. LOVE that book. Ranks up there with the Sacketts, The Lone Star Ranger, and Wilderness Trek as my top favorite westerns.

I'd have to go with my peanut, and a bigger companion for some of the rougher tasks of riddin', eatin out,' huntin' etc... No, wait, the 'nut does all of it now, would have done it then. Hmmm. ;) I'd have to have my 3-5/8" 4 blade congress along too though for blade choices. Or a moose... a moose would be good too.

A medium sheath knife would be nice to have too, a nessmuck maybe, but honestly something like a sharp finger, or even better one like my Dads old Western... about 4.5" of trailing point blade and a stacket leather handle.(can't remember the darned model number!)

I'd also like to have my old Winchester 30-30 carbine, but in a cartridge of the times, it'd have to be in 32 Win. and my birds head 3.5" barreled .45Colt Berretta Stampede.. mybe one like it in 44-40.

I'd go with Black Bart (Charles Bolton). He was an interesting, cultured, and eccentric man. I suspect that we could have some great conversations!

Shotgun: 10-gauge Greener BLNE, cut to about 16 to 20-inch barrels. OO buckshot cartridges for those few guards who might have more guts than brains.

Rifle: Winchester 1876 , caliber 45/75, with a 24-inch octagon barrel.

Hanguns: Colt SAA, caliber .45 Colt. 5 1/2-inch barrel, nickel finish, with ivory grips on a Colt 1860 grip frame. Remington .41 caliber double derringer, nickel finish and ivory grips, for "back-up".

Knife: 4- to 4 1/18-inch closed "Sunfish", just like Bart's. Ebony scales would be preferred.

Which Fictional Character (Books, Movies, TV Shows whatever) Would you like to accompany?
Stumpy from Rio Bravo:)

What Traditional Folder would you bring? GEC Furtaker Trapper in Yellow Rose, cause I really want one.

What Traditional Fixed Blade would you bring? Marble's anything

What Rifle would you carry? Anything would be a .22 but to stick to the period I like the look and feel of a Henry

What Sidearms would you carry? A shorty Colt Single Action

Don't Ask me why I picked a Walter Brennen character I just really like him. Just seems like a perfect sidekick if you ask me.

I'd ride with the Tinker, and carry two tinker made bowies..

then i'd hook up withe Tell sacket..also carrying said bowies..

stop in to NO and get some good training with said bowies..

stop in at the Alamo, and pick up the original bowie knife, collect a few witnessed statements, talk to Bowie himself, taking good notes. Zip back in a time machine and secure them in a safe deposit box..

head back with a modern map and GPS, note the location of the lost Dutchman mine.

Ride with Preacher, Jubal sacket, and Kerbuchard. Valiant. Fence with Tatton chantry.
