I never heard or thought Marines were dumb, But I have heard that to be a Marine there has to be some question to your heritage.:p ;)
I would've fit in perfectly!!!! ;)

It looks to me as if Bush had his mind made up all along. If there is not war with Iraq I'll be more surprised than anybody. And, in any war folks get killed and hurt. I worry about our boys and we all know that the Marines and Special Forces will be at greatest risk and I worry about the innocents in Iraq. I guess a peaceful world is something we pray for but know we'll never get.

I think it is a real shame that it has come this far and if we have another War.

I really don't want to see another War myself but it looks like we might anyway.

All I can do is pray for my brother Marines and hope they make it home safely.

Saddam is evil and needs to go, no doubt about it. But here's what bugs me about the whole thing:

Bush Admin says "comply with inspectors or else--war!"

Saddam complies.

Bush Admin says "well, he's hiding things anyway and we just know it. So war anyway!"

I know that's WAY oversimplified and a little misquoted but you know what I mean. We didn't need to look WORSE in the rest of the world than we already do. Why didn't we just come out and say what we were going to do in the first place: "Saddam is too dangerous to the N.Sec of the U.S. so we are going to remove him" Seems to me that that is the most truthful way of stating what our purpose seems to be.

Am I saying we shouldn't take Saddam out because of what others may think? No. I just wish we were more honest about what our real motives were.

MauiRob,

You have some interesting points there.

My thing is that if we would have finished the job the first time we wouldn't be in this mess now.

And I really don't think we should care what the rest of the world thinks sense they always look to us to bail them out.

Just do it and get it over with and if anyone doesn't like it then tough. :D

Just say Who's Next and that will shut them up. :D

I for one am tired of the UN and the rest of the World bad mouthing the US, maybe we should just cut the whinners off and see if they like like it.

If France and Germany want to continue to oppose us in the U.N. maybe we need to add 2 more states in the union. Besides France already has a disney world so we won't need to build one. :)

Peace is something that only everone can create, but it is usually counter productive for the governments and big businesses involved. Face it, war is good for big countrie's economies. Look at the GNP for the US once WWII got rolling. You had your original labor force fighting overseas, you had women and children working in sweatshop-like conditions, rationing gas and other commodities, I ask you --who wins a war? Big busines, hiding under the guise of a government declaration.

That said, I must say I love my country, but not the way it does business with others.

Matt--Ouuch! Watch that country bashin:) We gots all nationalities here in the Forum, right? We don't wanna carry a spate between big governmental powers over to our friends in the aforementioned countries, like Stephensee, our French connection, or Manhoucher, our German friend.

Perhaps this thread B-longs in the political discussion forum?

The world is a big neighborhood, and like any neighborhood you've got good neighbors and bad ones. In northeast Afghanistan I was amongst neighbors from England, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, France, Australia, and Norway. There were no oil fields, no "weapons of mass destruction", just neighbors banded together to root out a common threat, like a community of farmers teaming up to run to ground a fox that had been raiding their hen houses. I was glad to take part in it, and only hope it can and will continue on to other threats like the Maoists in Nepal.

I'm an American and proud of it, but no prouder than my "neighbors" were of their homelands. I guess for me it comes down to something as simple as we need to watch out for one another and treat folks the way we want to be treated.

and true. Thanks! The world is always shrinking, and soon all will be neighbors--we have the choice of building walls between us, or bridges to carry us even closer to our neighbors.

"Even the strongest advocates of U.S. policy in Berlin and Paris were annoyed, including Germany's mass circulation Bild daily, traditionally a vocal supporter of the United States.

In an editorial, Bild reminded Rumsfeld of his German roots and the ideals of the French Revolution which inspired the United States' constitution.

"Mister Rumsfeld, hundreds of thousands of your G.I.s fell for 'old Europe' because they freed us from the tyranny of Hitler. You are sinning against your own heroes by disparaging 'old Europe.' Your G.I.s died for the ideals of your place of origin," Reuters translated Bild's editorial as saying. "

The post by Melancholy Mutt regarding General Hackworth's views on Iraq pretty well sums up what I've been thinking for a while. It doesn't matter to me what is espoused by the President, or either party. I don't see the immediate threat, but do see a substantial threat if the Arab world is further inflamed against us. This is too important a situation to take a parisan stance on.

There was fear and concern about US vulnerability from terrorist attacks in the late 70's and early 80's. 9-11 brought those concerns back. I strongly believe that our biggest threat comes from terrorist cells within the United States, our allies, or countries other than Iraq. I just don't believe the majority are funded or directed by Iran. Everything I've read in the past year indicates substantial money coming from individuals in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, etc.

I do see North Korea as a threat, however. And for all of the reasons cited by the President against Iran.

None of this addresses the question. Marines know one tactic. It worked well at Tarawa, didn`t it?
Yes Marines are dumb. They take pride in it don`t they?
Speaking as a mud grunt who knows tactics and strategy, I guess they serve their purpose.
Do not even get me started on the dumb things that Marines have done in my time and in front of me. How any survived combat is a mystery to me. Most were wounded at least twice. One did not quite under stand the concept of the low crawl.
Just dumb as rocks. And they do not tend to get smarter with age.
I have a lot of jar head friends. It pays to keep a close eye on them lest they hurt themselves and you. Even then, you cannot watch them all of the time. You will pay for any lack of vigelence. These folks think that booby traps are intriguing toys that they should be allowed to play with. And they do not ask! Your last plea is "Do not touch that!" Save me from Marines.
AS dive buddies; what buddy? They are off on a frolic of their own.
I try to avoid meeting them anymore.

What service has the most amphibious landing experiance?

For whatever it's worth.....

I don't know how the various services rate IQ wise but I know this.

Remembering that we don't make our own intelligence but that it is assigned to us by God here's what happened to me. A couple of weeks after my arrival at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in 1952 the brass called me in: Would you like to be considered for a Fleet Appointment to Annapolis? I declined. Would you be interested in participating in the Naval Cadet program? I declined. How about OCS? I declined. The reason I declined is I was there to do my tour of duty and get back to college, not to make a career out of Naval Service. The reason I was called in was because I had scored highest in my company on the test barrage given to all recruits.

I've met a few Marines and ex-Marines in my life who I felt were considerably smarter than me and there's probably a couple right here on this forum. Of course, I've met others from every branch of service and walk of life who fell into the same category -- smarter than me.

I don't think you can carte blanche any group in any way. Groups are comprised of individuals.

Warlock6, your post is a bunch of crap. I spent 4 years in the Marine Corp and later, 4 years in army intelligence. I've hung out with people from both services, as well as several sailors. There are complete idiots in all three services, as well as very intelligent individuals.

Since I went to Marine boot camp and Army Basic Training, I can tell you, much of the combat training is similar. The days of Marines only hitting the beach to be slaughtered, as at Tarawa, are few and far between. I doubt if most of the Marines that were dropped off on those beaches in WWII thought it was the best tactic either. They had no choice but to move forward.

The Marines have done alot of different things since then, and it's common knowledge, and common sense, that their training is much more diverse and sophisticated than just jumping off a landing craft to hit the beach. We can all dredge up idiotic, suicidal tactics for any service.

I was around many sailors at NWS Charleston, and many Army grunts at Fort Hood, TX. The average Army grunts weren't much different from the average Marine grunts. I was there when soldiers got run over by their own vehicle, shot by their tanker machine gunners, and saw all kinds of bonehead things done in the grunt companies we were attatched to.

What kind of ax do you have to grind, and what type of people do you hang around?
