Who's already making knives in ZDP189?

Some of the Japanese kitchen knife makers claim as high as RC67 for the ZDP-189. I have no way to dispute or confirm it. Sal's estimate is probably closer to the truth. It is always used in a warikomi wrap with a soft stainless on the exterior. It is too expensive and too brittle to be made in any other way.

Sorry Hot,

We opted for the D4 which prolonged the shipping dates.

The ZDP Horn (sprint) is also on the way shortly.

Hi Brian.

Spyderco is producing a Caly jr in ZDP-189. The model is planned for delivery next month.

It is a "Sprint" run of 1200 pieces. More than half have already been spoken for by our distributors and dealers.

Burgundy FRN handle. Full flat grind.

Hey Cliff, The ZDP is a san-mai laminate so Rc is difficult to test without a micro-hardness tester. 64/65 is the claim. The piece I use in my kitchen is 65, but it is a solid piece.

When they come in, I'll send you one to test. I owe Joe a Caly as well. I'll be curious to hear results.

What will they use for the laminate steel? The previous one use some lesser steel, pot metal I think.

I just got in 7 pieces of the laminated ZDP-189 straight from Japan and will be making some knives out of it shortly...:D Paul Bos will be doing the heat treatment.....I also ordered one piece of plain (unlaminated) ZDP-189 so that we can heat treat it with the laminated stuff so we can have something to RC test.

This stuff has some real potential! I sure wish I would have been able to get a Calypso with this steel, but they were all gone when I heard they were out! I have a Delica backordered, but the Calypso is the one I really want!

Tom: That is REALLY, REALLY cool!!! I can not wait to see what you make!!

Holy Resurrected Thread, Batman!

11 mo. old thread...and yet, still not too many folks are making knives with ZDP-189.

Well, Tom is. :D

And I'll have some at the Blade Show this year. Can't wait to see test results!

Paul said he's going to heat-treat it like ATS-34. I requested 59-60 hardness on the ATS-34...which is 65-67 Rc in the ZDP-189 core.

Both - though I have not tested it myself personally in my shop (which I do plan on doing).

Cliff,
I believe that Paul is just going by the specs currently based on my conversation with him! I ordered a piece of plain ZDP-189 to send along with the laminated blades so that a blade or two in the batch can be RC tested. Should give a pretty good idea of the hardness of the other blades.

I think I am going to have Paul heat treat mine to RC-65. They will be smaller EDC knives that are going to be hollow ground nice and thin! In my opinion these are not heavy use knives, so why not make them nice and thin??

Of course if a customer wants one flat ground or what ever I will try and accomodate them.

Tom

Tom I'm excited to see what you do with these little ZDP blades.

Steve

Did Paul already HT ZDP-189 before or you'll be first?

On my blade heattrited by Paul it was always marks of Rocwell test, so he doing it as an QA as I understand, but it will not work with laminated steel.

I heart that best for it is 65HRC.

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili,
Paul has heat treated ZDP in the past, but only the laminated. Paul RC checks every blade I think. He does a VERY GOOD job!!
