Who's already making knives in ZDP189?

Vassili,
Paul has heat treated ZDP in the past, but only the laminated. Paul RC checks every blade I think. He does a VERY GOOD job!!

Thanks, good to know that he is doing it now. I have A2 and ATS-34 done by him (made by myself I mean) and they are just great!

I got some ZDP-189 blank from my friend in Jappan, probably first, on this forum at least - I posted about this about year ago and now I see many people geting it here. I remember a lot of legends about Japan not allowing to export it and that HT can be done in Japan only and the price is astronomical.

Nice to see that it is now not such a big deal and knifmakers here geting it and Paul Bos start heat treating it on regular bases. I should finish blade I made out of it and finaly make my own knife with ZDP-189.

Also, have you ever look at "ZDP-189 for big knives" - I mean SRS-15? Powdered stainless high speed steel which is tough enough to make big knives and can be heat treated to 65HRC?

Thanks, Vassili.

I just got in 7 pieces of the laminated ZDP-189 straight from Japan and will be making some knives out of it shortly...:D Paul Bos will be doing the heat treatment.....I also ordered one piece of plain (unlaminated) ZDP-189 so that we can heat treat it with the laminated stuff so we can have something to RC test.

This stuff has some real potential! I sure wish I would have been able to get a Calypso with this steel, but they were all gone when I heard they were out! I have a Delica backordered, but the Calypso is the one I really want!

Hey Tom,

I tried to send you an email, not sure if it went through. Send me an email, I can help you here...

What more can you tell us about the suppliers in Japan? Are they buying direct? or off the shelf?
