Who's been cut by tip-up carry, and how or why?

Never had a blade tip up open in my pocket except when drawing and the thumb stud hangs on pocket seam and opens wave style.
All my benchmade axis locks do/did this. Finally got bit by a partial open blade during draw.

Same issue here.
Thing is that I carry so many different knives I lose track of individual traits such as oversized thumb studs and other opening devices that may "wave" a blade open.
Never been cut though but my pants have a few extra holes in them.

In general, it been my opinion that tip-up really was the product of

When I first started buying knives with clips they seemed to all be tip down. Then Spyderco started making FRN knives with integral clips and those had to be manufactured tip up so the clip wouldn't interfere with the pivot. I don't know if tip up was ever inspired by function but this is just from my limited observation.

Sebenza got me good once. I guess it had moved more to the middle of my pocket which allowed it to open slightly, that was enough to draw blood. On my way to a gun show but I didn't let it keep me from enjoying the show.

Same here.^
My Seb pricked my middle finger. No biggie but I do prefer TD.

The combination of tip up, weak detent, and catchy studs seems to be the problem. The only thing I could change is the catchy studs, which solves it..

Tip up for me and no problems. I ride mountain bikes and never had an issue with it opening or coming loose. Think you're ok

I usually carry IWB and prefer tip up. The only trouble I ve ever had with unintentional opening was with my waved Emerson. Now, when I carry that it s inside my pocket, unclipped.

I cut myself a few times with an Emerson Super Kerambit when it opened in my pocket. I had the knife flipped with the spine facing out, though. Stopped doing that after it opened in my pocket several times.

Also with a knife with detent play. The tip would clear the handle and get caught on the seam of my pocket and open when trying to take it out.

Yes, agree with your thoughts (initial pocket-clip mountings were typically TD configuration). Then the Spyderco FRN versions of the "clipit" for reasons you mentioned created a TU configuration. Personally I did not care for this for a number of reasons (some mentioned in my previous post).

When I commented about feeling TU was a "product of" flipper ... what I meant was popularity for tip up carry. I feel TU became much more adopted/popular/prevalent especially by those preferring flippers, effectively begining with the Kit Carson (RIP) m16 flipper.

I've carried both tip up and tip down for over 25 years without a problem either way. The only time I ever cut myself was with a CRKT Kiss that was just loose in my pocket, but that design was begging for accidents......

I've never had an issue, even when I used to stupid carry with a knife configured for tip up right hand in my left pocket, so that the blade spine was towards the open side of my pocket (even knives with weak detents like the DPX hest). I've since corrected my bad idea. But still, no cuts or close calls.

The only time I was ever cut was because of my stupidity. I was wearing cargo shorts and put my zt0562 in the bottom pocket; it ended up opening when I sat down and went straight through my shorts into my thigh. I was lucky that it was more of a slice instead of it stabbing me. I was ticked off but I was more impressed how sharp my knife was. lol

never cut by tip up, but I've been bitten twice by tip down knives. I like TU way more, feels more natural and I only carry the other way when the knife design dictates it

Protech auto (pocket clip & tip up ) opened in my pocket and never realized it until I went into my pocket to get my lighter. Had to go to the dispensary with a different way the cut happened.

Just once. A Benchmade axis lock auto. I'm guessing I had accidentally released the lock getting something out of my pocket earlier and it opened just enough to poke me before the back of my pocket stopped itl. The spring pressure from the auto mechanism insured it didn't get jostled safely back shut before I reached for it to use it.

Once upon a time, I carried a ZT0561 tip up inside waist band in a pair of cargo shorts. I had taken them off (don't remember why), and when I shook them out to put them back on, the weak detent on the knife had allowed the blade to open. It is stupid sharp, so I never felt a thing till I looked down at the long line of blood on my leg.

I have since swapped the clip around to tip down, but not until after it opened unnoticed in my back pocket, punched a hole in my jeans and two holes in my truck seat. Never felt anything until I reached down to unlock my seat belt.

I think you should start a seperate thread with your diagram, inclusive posting text accompaniment describing your experiences related to your conclusions illustrated.
