So the CA Bushbash is next Saturday:D. I hear some of you guys are going early like maybe Friday. I'm trying to decide if I should go on Friday instead of Saturday. I just want to be sure if I go on Friday that some of you guys are going to be there. I don't want to be the only one there:o I might be able to go Friday afternoon.

ray- we'll be there friday man.. you should try and make it out there..
we were originally going to be leaving thursday morning, but now i think we'll be leaving thursday afternoon, spending the night somewhere along the way and getting there friday morning....:)

Unless something delays my departure, I'm planning on getting up there Thursday, taking all the good camp spots, then charging you guys for them!:D

Seriously, I do plan to drive up Thursday unless some emergency pushes me back till Friday. With ten hours of driving (round trip), I want a couple days with no motoring. I'll be driving an older ('93) blue Chevy K2500 extended cab pickup.

Just curious: Do any of you have a current fire permit? Mine expired 12/31/08 and if nobody else has one, I'll need to stop at a ranger station for a renewal.

Thanks,

Fire permit??? i had no idea we even need one lol.. Im going to be leaving on friday early morning maybe get out of the house at around 4am to beat the traffic. Im going to be bringing 5 gallons of drinking water and might fill a 10 gallon water container i got in the car for everyday use. Who ever get there first hang a T-shirt or something to catch the eye at the turn off..

Generally, when you are camping on Forest Service land in CA (which I'm assuming this is), but are not in a developed site, you need a fire permit. In the old days, they required you to show them a shovel, an axe, and a bucket in order to get the permit. I haven't had to do that for at least a decade but they do give you a little fire safety lecture and a pamphlet with your permit. One friend had to sit through a 10-20 min. film clip on a video monitor before they would cut him a permit.

Last summer when there were a lot of fire closures, a group of rangers didn't want to give me a permit for future use (permits are good for the whole year). They kept asking me where I was going to use it and I kept saying "I don't know because I haven't planned all my year's trips yet. But I can guarantee it will be only somewhere where fires are legal". They still didn't want to issue an annual fire permit because they were afraid I would use it in a fire closure area. What finally convinced them was my argument that "if I were going to intentionally violate the law by having a fire in a fire closure area, why would I give a damn about whether or not I had a fire permit? I obviously care about having only legal fires so stop arguing and give me the permit." Which they did.

HAHAHAHAHA

I will be heading out MAYBE Thursday afternoon (doubtful), otherwise I will be leaving around 6 or 7am Friday morning.

i have a few questions..

do we have to worry about bears at all?? the misses seems to think that we need all of our food in bear proof containers... as requested by the park...

also, where are we entering the park, in relation to a park map??

As I understand it, this spot is not in the Park but on national forest land. I think that was confirmed by lambertiana in one of the prior threads. The fact that he target shoots there leads me to believe that's correct.

I expect that there are bears in this area (I know I've seen them farther up). Outside of Yosemite (where bears have learned to pop windows and trunks), it's generally safe to store food in a vehicle as long as it is covered and secured (out of view). However, there's nothing wrong with using bear resistant containers as an extra precaution.

I believe lambertiana blessed the directions set forth in the calendar sticky.

I'll post this here, too.

First - there are plenty of bear problems at the campgrounds in Sequoia above our location. Those campgrounds are 2000' higher and have a lot of people all the time, and bears are drawn by the smell. This is a spot that sees very little, if any, camping, so bears are not habituated to this location for food. I have camped a number of times at Camp Wortman just down the road a few miles, and never had any problem with a lot of food laying around. Of course, a bear may decide to break that streak.

Second - I have learned that google maps is giving directions to those coming from the north to exit at Kingsburg and take 201 across to meet 216 in Woodlake. This route works, and is actually shorter than taking the route that I have given, but it is full of stops and turns (some of which have poor signage) and it is actually much better to take the route that I described. Likewise, google maps may give a route from the south to take an exit well south of Visalia and come up through Lindsay/Porterville/Exeter, etc. That would be a long drive.

Third - Mtnfolk Mike has requested a .22, so I will bring mine. I have plenty of ammo for it. If my son comes, I will bring a shotgun and some clay pigeons. I will have my .45 on me (I carry it all the time), but I can only bring one box of ammo. I can't find any for sale around here. So if you want to blast away with a .45, see if you can find any 45 Auto where you live. I carry a Glock 30, but if anyone would prefer a full size 1911, I will bring that to shoot instead.

thanks for the info. John...

the misses is now wanting to leave thursday afternoon again, so DWK if you're going to be out there on thursday, if all goes as planned, we'll be out there thursday evening sometime... i'll probably post in this thread and let you all know before hand...

this is our ride...

Sweet. I will be bringing a couple of .22's to plink with and plenty of rounds. I'll have my .45 or .357 just because, but as lambertiana stated I don't have much ammo for them either.

mAKE SURE to take pics like a Japanese tourist!
