Who's next?

Who is this Toby Rogers or Arnold -- what's his username here? Was he banned or is he the guy who got all upset over a minor misunderstanding a couple of weeks ago and said he wasn't going to post here any more?

...BF members who argue, insult, threaten, and belittle others, offering nothing of substance to the knife community and are allowed to stay, while ...

There's a certain amount of truth to that, and the reason for it is Bladeforums is run by rules instead of by an overlord's whim. We don't ban a member just because he's a dork and everybody hates him; we only ban people who break the rules. Some forum websites are different; some places an admin runs around looking for dorks and every time he sees somebody he doesn't like he bans him. Some websites have multiple people entrusted with that power and if any one of them takes a dislike to you there's no warning and no appeal -- you're outta there.

We don't work that way at Bladeforums and that's what makes Bladeforums different from other knife forums. We do have an ignore key so you can effectively ban another member for yourself -- you'll never see another post from him -- but you will still see replies to his posts that may quote him. You'll have to use your own willpower to skip over those replies and quotes; the software can't help you with that.

Re links to knives for sale, on ebay or anywhere on the net:

For the purpose of shilling -- NOT ALLOWED. Doesn't matter if it's your sale or someone else's, it's still advertising and NOT ALLOWED. If you want to sell a knife you can get the appropriate membership and post in the appropriate forum. If you see someone else has a knife for sale and you think it's a wonderful bargain and you want to tell your friends at Bladeforums all about it and you're so excited you can't hold it in -- well, life is tough and some people have to learn the hard way. Maybe someday you'll learn not to post spam where it isn't wanted.

For discussion purposes: that's different. Watch out, though -- a couple of times people have seen an offering so ridiculous they wanted to give everybody the chance to laugh about it, and posted a sarcastic message about what a wonderful bargain it was, and didn't show any sign they were being sarcastic.

I got fooled that way a little while back in The SPAM of a life time!!! A member reported what looked like spam to him, I responded and it sure looked like spam to me, so I despammed it. I didn't even follow the link first. Then the author of the post wrote me a nice email apologizing for the confusion and explaining he meant that sarcastically, so naturally I apologized too and restored the post.

More recently the same thing started to happen, but that time the author of the post didn't write a nice email explaining; he threw a hissy fit, and things got worse from there.

Just try to keep in mind spammers often use very exaggerated language. Just because you use a lot of exclamation points doesn't make it clear you're being sarcastic; spammers use a lot of exclamation points too....

If it's an auction the safest way is to wait until the auction is over before you post about it. Then no one can mistake your post for shilling. If you want to post about a knife that's currently for sale, just make it clear you're not trying to get people to go and buy it -- make it very clear, so clear a moderator who's in a hurry and hates spammers can't misunderstand. We all hate spammers and we're always in a hurry when we respond to reports of spam.

Well, I know I don't participate here every day ( about a half a post a day to be exact) but when I do drop in, I hate to see spam. I think it was a little different when there were only about 6 or 8 guys that even looked at the Schrade Collectors Forums on any given day, you knew who was linking to what and why. But, once the forum started getting a lot of attention on e-bay, the number of links to auctions started to grow along with the new members. You could see e-bay descriptions of knives taken 'word for word' from posts on the forum. Hell, we even had the owners of the "New Schrade" and his distributors on here promoting their products, but not willing to step-up to a paying membership. So I welcome the moderators and applaud their ability to spot spammers, and I hope both Paul and Arnold will look at the big picture and due the same, seeing that the mods have apologized and all.
As for MM, if I recall correctly, it wasn't long after he stated " I'm out of here" he was back here complaining about how he could not hawk in the custom forum because he didn't have a $25 gold membership. Now I know there are other guys here that work on knives, but they don't come on here every day and show every knife they work on, and oh, just happen to mention, which ones are not sold yet. So even though he is young and may have some talent, he ain't stupid, and should be subject to the same rules as any other dealer or knife maker.
Well thats just the way I see it.

Thanks Rick

So as to be perfectly clear, suppose there was a live auction on E-bay and I had a question about the knife whether that question would be about a general age or something just didn't look right about the knife. Would I be safe in linking to that live auction to ask the question in the Schrade forum about the knife as long as I clearly stated that I wasn't trying to run it up or keep the price down? I understand we have a BRL forum and really learn alot there but there are some times I would like the Schrade experts in the Schrade forum to give their opinion. I would think as long as I don't try to denigrate the auction (unless of course it's someone trying to tell me the soul of Uncle Henry is in one of the knives he's selling) that I would be okay, but I would like to know exactly where I stand. I certainly don't try to intentionally be a troublemaker (although I am sorta a smart ass from time to time :D ) but I do try to stay within the rules. I just think in a lot of cases, if it's an opinion on a Schrade I'm seeking, then it's the Schrade forum where I want to go with my question.

Thanks!
DB

Yes, you can ask whether a knife on ebay is a fake just as people often do in BRL's forum, and there's nothing wrong with making fun of them either. Just make it clear that's what you're doing so nobody thinks you're shilling.

My son posted his knives on this forum as a means of sharing his craft with others. So Fuck all you Assholes!! It's easy for slimy little cocksuckers like you to hide behind a mouse and a computer screen and talk shit about people. I'f any of you cowardly little sons-of-bitches have anything to say about this matter then contact me personally. If you'd like to meet with me in person somewhere, I'd be more than happy to present you with the opportunity to do so. Now you have a reason to ban me too, so fuck you all.

I thought that Cougar,Blues,et al handled it quite well,actually...
Good job guys!

Cougar if you are going to respond to a few other posts on here maybe you can respond to this one.Why even though I am a gold member with almost 700 posts I was not only warned but fined points for auction spotting on an auction that nobody in their right mind was going to bid on.It was a 50.00 knife selling for over 200.00.I posted it as a joke.Everyone took it that way except Ken.Several even tried to contact you. There was no reference to a number.on Ebay.I have always asked people not to post on current auctions as it does affect prices but this was already past the limits.Arnold

Based on this man's tone, I'm not at all suprised that his son has exhibited some control issues. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Thanks to the mods for takin' care a business.

Tobyrogers, do you remember your post? I can find a copy of it if you need a reminder. It was not obvious you were making fun of that auction. Not without following the link and looking at the auction, anyway, and that's not what people do when they see what appears to be spam.

Somebody saw it and thought it was shilling and clicked the "report post" button. A moderator responded and he thought it was shilling too. He was not being dumb; it looked like shilling. We try to get spam off the forums as fast as we possibly can.... So he despammed the post, and he gave you a minor infraction.

It was all just a little misunderstanding -- just like happened to me a while earlier, linked to earlier in this thread. You got a few points, which means nothing as long as you don't keep getting more, and even that could probably be fixed if we could get some communication going.

Thanks to the mods for takin' care a business.

Blues, Gus, Ken, and Cougar.

Don't go changing a thing, you all rock, my hats off to you all.
I for one do appreciate the fine job you all do here.

THANK YOU!!!!!!

Who's next?

I volunteer to be next if folks think it is OK for some folks to advertise off of the people who support this site.:grumpy:

Cougar if you have a copy of the post I made I wish you would either post it or pm it to me.There was no link to an auction or reference to the seller, only a mention of a 153UH on Ebay.Thats what made me and several others question the fine.I think several people emailed you and the other mods and got no answer back.Look I like this forum and would not do anything to hurt it.I just feel that the mod overreacted to an innocent joke.Arnold

It's too bad it had to come to that. MM is a talented young maker who will go far, shame he couldn't just buy a membership and save himself all the trouble. But he is young, and hopefully will learn from it.

I just checked and you're right, there was no link in the post. The post was:
165UH on Ebay
Michael and the rest of you need to jump on this one.A used and sharpened 165UH that has 4 hours to go.Bidding was up to 200+ dollars.A real steal.Wish I could find a few geniuses like this to buy my knives.Arnold

You have to understand we're on call 24 hours a day (whenever we're at our computers to receive the message, anyway) and we try to get spam off the forums as fast as we possibly can. The spammers know their ads are going to be stomped on; they rely on the odds that a customer will find an ad before a moderator stomps on it, and keep on spamming as fast as we can deal with it....

So a moderator who was probably in the middle of something else suddenly got a spam report, ran over there and found an ad saying there's a knife for sale on ebay, you guys gotta jump on this one, only four hours to go -- can you see his viewpoint? It looks like spam. (Sometimes there's a link, sometimes there's an auction number, sometimes neither, the spammers just tell the suckers to search ebay for it, to get around automatic censorship of ebay links on some forums.) He's in a hurry to despam it; every minute a post is on the forum makes a spammer feel it's more worthwhile to spam us some more.... So he spoiled your joke, and also gave you a few infraction points.

I can see it from your viewpoint, too, of course! You were just sharing the joke, you probably think everybody in the world knows you know the whole idea of a used and sharpened 165UH going for over $200 is ludicrous, or at least everybody who would be reading the Schrade collectors' forum -- and along comes some dork of a moderator who misses the point completely, spoils the joke, and then to add insult to injury gives you infraction points (and probably told you off too) -- I don't blame you for being upset.

But it was all just a misunderstanding. You didn't do anything bad or even stoopid, but the moderator involved really wasn't being stoopid either.

Nothing wrong with laughing at the fools on ebay -- but from now on let's make sure it's clear you're laughing at the fools and not shilling some "bargain" ...

Thanks Cougar for the explanation. If this had been done when this happened it would have helped.I know the mods on here do as good a job as they can and catch hell from people for trying to do a thankless job.Again thanks for taking the time to post.Arnold

It's too bad it had to come to that. MM is a talented young maker who will go far, shame he couldn't just buy a membership and save himself all the trouble. But he is young, and hopefully will learn from it.

Perhaps his father could have bought a membership for him, if he hadn't had to put all his money in the swear jar.
