Not quite up to "Survivor Man" standards, but I'm entertained by it and there are a few interesting nuggets and ideas.

looks like a very intresting show. Makes you think about ideas. One good point he makes is that you do want to find other people. I dont realy agree with the idea of the lone wolf. Good show for what it is.

The whole hospital/generator thing had me a bit perplexed.

I think to get off the beaten to death path of every other survival show ever aired, he showed what might be possible picking over the bones of society.

He used the generator to recharge a car battery he presumably used to get the old GMC pick up he found up and running. He also seemed to imply that the batteries he was relying on in his mag light were rechargeables too.

Some of the things he did were of questionable value, such as setting up a looping transmitter that wouldn't be running automatically long enough to bother with, but the bit on making field expedient biodiesel was pretty cool.

All the ducking and hiding behind bushes seemed a little corny and bear gryllish to me but I couldn't help but watch.

I saw parts of it, didnt see any previews before hand (or heard about it from other members here, SHAME!) so was a bit surprised. It was a bit bear gryllish with the running around and jumping, seemingly quick and rash unnecessarily dangerous movements. Thought it was decent but, only say a bit maybe next episode.

Boats,

You are correct and I did hear the guy's explanation. In my experience, quite a few ostensibly dead batteries on older cars can be made to start the vehicle simply by doing a thorough cleaning of the terminal connections. Alternatively, I would scrounge several tired batteries and try to connect them in parallel for the initial start, then disconnect the extras. I just can't imagine finding a hospital that would be secured and in that good shape, ready for me alone to break in to. And why not just take the generator starting batteries and use them to jump a vehicle?

I need to get better at the "open mind" state necessary to enjoy some of these shows.

I just thought it was unrealistic. His priority on water was not there. Also, too many acrobatic moves, you could get hurt real easy and make the situation a lot worse.

The scenario also did not seem accurate.

I caught the first half.

It appears to be filmed in Detroit. The bridge that he had to cross is the Fort St. bridge that goes over the Rouge river. I grew up in that neighborhood and still live near the Rouge. I've posted pics here of my walks along that river.

The giant tarp covered hill in the background with the tires on it to hold the tarps down is salt. The Morton Salt mine is there and that mountain of salt is some of their surplus.

Second, the sewer system scenes were kinda staged. Detroit does not have numbered streets that intersect like NY. We do have streets like 2nd, 25th, etc. but they do not intersect.

The abandon buildings he was in are the only thing that has me wondering if there is more than one location. I know the Southwest side where the bridge was but I didn't recognize any of the graffiti/gang tags. You get to know what gangs are in the area by the tags. I'd never seen "SUS" before.

I'll give it one more chance but I wasn't all that impressed with the first episode.

got it,seems interesting he is doing neat stuff, and some off the wall, the steel wool with a 9 volt is kool...........

I saw it last it last night. I do have to agree that all the sneaking around is a bit much, but he's simulating something you would have to do when there might be hostiles around. I didn't agree with him going to a hospital either only because there might be still people hanging around looking for drugs. Some of his acrobatic jumps and moves can really get you hurt. Like twisting an ankle or stepping on a nail in a board. etc....
I 'm sure we can sit here pick this guy apart in all things he should have or shouldn't have done. Either way I thought in the end it can be a real eye opener for some people and not to mention it was pretty neat that history channel is focusing on urban survival techniques instead of out in the bush. Lets face it, most of us including myself, might have to escape the city first and then do all bush survival when we get there.
Overall I will watch more episodes if they made more. Does any know if they are making more episodes?

demoteamone,

That video summed it up. I just did not want to take the time to go through it. The video does sum it up with hummor. :)

Saw it last night. It was more then a bit contrived, but it was fun to watch. But where is his firearm? You know the first thing any sane survivor would do is arm himself...but that would scare the sheeple I guess so we won't go there. And what was with the generator!? He gathers 1 gallon of fuel and powers that monster hospital generator for "4 to 5 hours"? I don't think so.
