Mors Kochanski.Another excellent book on survival in the Canadian wilderness.

When I watch Les Stroud, sometimes I flashback to Ron Hoods video's..
I've always dug Rons stuff.. He and Karen are great teachers and very entertaining IMHO.
Jeff Randall, is of course the MAN of the jungle too..;)

Ron Hood has taught me much and has given me the incredible experience of participating in one of his videos.

He is unconditionally the best as well. He took a chance on an unknown guy, flew me out to Idaho, and trusted me to have his back in the field. He is the real deal who keeps his cool and has taught me more than anyone yet in this field of study.

He and Karen are my friends, and they are welcome to my campfire anytime, anywhere.

Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin: Incredibly knowledgeable, incredibly humble and real, and more integrity in the tips of their pinky fingers than most folks have in their whole bodies. They keep their cool under the most trying of circumstances, and it's not uncommon to find them smiling and enjoying crappy situations because they look at those as opportunities and challenges, and means to increase their knowledge. They are two people I'd drop everything to go help if they needed it. And they're fun as hell to hang with in Vegas afterhours during SHOT! :D

There are so many knowledgeable people who are also just really great human beings, as you can tell.

One more special one, who had vast amounts of knowledge, and was a dear friend: Knifemaker and consummate outdoorsman Rob Simonich. RIP, Buddy...

VERY well said Brian! I forgot to Mention Mike P. with Jeff.. Those guys really are the REAL deal. You would be a lucky bastard if you had ANY of those people around you when the chips were down. Ron and Karen are class acts without doubt. And of course our great friend Rob... Well, they just dont make em like that anymore. I miss him everyday.

One of my personal favorites is You Alone in the Maine Woods put out by the Maine Warden Service. It's geared toward hunters (complete with a spiffy blaze orange cover if you get the hard copy) and is still provided at hunter safety courses. It's my personal favorite as I was given a copy before my first camping trip at age 8 or 9 (30 yrs ago). It was also my first introduction to the concept of a personal survival kit. It's available in pdf here:

I'm also a fan of Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart. It's not really survival-specific, but has a great wealth of general fieldcraft knowledge. I also like the fact that it was written around of the turn of the (20th) century yet so much of it translates just fine to today.

BTW, Kevin is most definitely not a putz.

He, like Marty, has integrity through and through and is eminently reliable. And he's a friend, as is Marty.

He trained the SAS all those years. Hmmmm
Cough! Cough! Edward Grylls weekend warrior. Not real SAS. Cough! Cough!

I agree with all the other names.

I really need to buy Ron Hoods videos.

Euell Gibbons books, "Stalking the wild Asparagus", Stalking the Blue Eyed oyster" and at least one other title I do not recall, is a great resource. His focus was not so much on outdoor living and survival, but gathering and eating wild foods as a supplement to whatever lifestyle a person currently lives in.

Stalking the Healthful Herbs.

Your a class act Brian! I spent a little time with Christine at Blade, she is good.:)

For me...
Cody Lundin, Mark Warren (Medicine Bow), Ila Hatter

Another thumbs up for Les Hiddins.

Quiet Bear, any more information on Mark Warren (Medicine Bow) and Ila Hatter? I've followed your posts, as I mentioned before, so if you think they are worthy of consideration, then I'd like to check them out.

Re: Rob Simonich, I never met the man and was exposed to him solely through Hoods Woods videos, but he gave me the impression of being a stand up guy and an enjoyable person to sit by a campfire with. Wish I had had the chance to meet him.

The foregoing also applies to a man I only met on the phone - Chris Janowski of the World Survival Institute.
