Okay, I know I live in the urban world but I have a thing for bushcraft. One day I hope to relocate to somewhere with clean air and lots of wildlife and vegetation. I love to learn as many survival/bushcraft skills as possible. And then practice the ones I can in my backyard. One of my sources of meditation. :D

I get a lot of my info. from reading but I also enjoy the various programs that pop up now and again. The three I am most familiar with are Ray Mears, Les Stroud, and Bear Grylls.

Which one is your favorite of the three and why. Also vote in the attached poll.

My favorite is Ray Mears. I just really like the way he teaches bushcraft, history, culture, etc... all in one. Not that the other two do not but I just like the way Mears presents it.

Second is Les. I like how he is on his own, doing it all by himself, and doesn't always make it.

Anyway, that's just this city HOG'S take on it.

What do you guys think?

Les Stroud more real to me baer is more intertaining but he has supposed to have been there done that so he can be more riska than us mere mortals:D

never heard of them....they must think us way out in the country folk know that stuff already:p

Really though, I do get cable now, what program are they on? would love to check those out!

morimotom----he's on tv, right?

me? ive been on tv a few times, but only the news.

les shroud= survivor man
bear grylls= man vs wild

dont know the other guy. les does his own filming and carries his camera equipment. he is alone and takes very little "survival" gear.

bear always has a film crew and carries some essentials all the time, knife, firestarter, etc. there have been a few exposures of bear doing things that some view as making him a fraud. (staying in hotels, refilming sequences, claiming to be in danger, when in fact he was very close to a heavily traveled highway.) but he is entertaining.

Bear might as wll be in a 7'11. WHO CLIMS A MOUNTAIN WHEN THEY HAVE NO FOOD!!!:confused: or id he have food... :D (prabaly did :grumpy:)

I have to say the hot air ballon on survivor man. he had to much stuff.

But les all the way. :D

Bear all the way. Not because he's a better outdoorsman, or survivalist - but because he's a better entertainer. His show is more exciting and even if it's mostly fluff, who cares. I'm not trying to learn, I'm trying to be entertained.

oh yea, I have seen both of those a couple of times. A while back I read the one was staying in motels at night and such. He admitted to it and said he was doing it right from now on.

Don't watch either enough to vote.

edit-Thanks for the info Mark.
Thanks for the link TL, went to check it out, going back.

I think Les is a cry baby and Bear tends to overreact alot and I have never heard of Ray Mears but he sounds cool so I will vote for him.

it would certainly be a mistake to watch either show expecting to learn how to survive in any wilderness. you may find a few tips, but each guy is thoroughly prepped for each area in which they are "stranded".

i enjoy les's show more because it lacks the showmanship that bear seems to pride himself on. sometimes the camera work is aggravating, but i find the simplicity makes survivorman more believable.

i find myself rolling my eyes every few minutes watching bear's antics. all the pee drinking, live animal eating, and over acting is sometimes too much.

Les Storud is a Canadian beast!

I love his show. It is very informative!

Although I am new to his stuff I think Ray Mears really focuses on showing you how the indigenous peoples, of whatever area he is in, lived off the land. And that might be cultures no longer around.

I have not learned one thing from bear.

i learned the figure four trap from les.

has anyone actully learned from bear?? :D:p

While I like Les and find his show interesting, it should really be called "Starving Man" since he spends most of the week talking about how hungry he is.

Of the three Id give Les the nod. He's by himself and doesnt always have all the "toys" with him.Very inventive too. As mentioned above he doesnt always make it out either.Bear does seem a little dramatized but is somewhat more entertaining.I have read about the fraud accusations and kinda doubt he was much of a SF guy but he is entertaining. He takes dumb ass risks that are completly inappropriate in survival situations but maybe some day we'll see him mess up and die and somehow ( and not get edited out for our amusement)Havent heard of the other dude but Ill check him out. One you didnt mention that kinda falls into this category is the one about the two guys living with the indigineous people of papua/new ginea(Mark and Olly are their names I believe)That show rocks but it is more of a sociological study than one in bushcraft. Lots of survival stuff you wouldnt think of though.

Ray Mears all the way, he really knows his stuff. The other two are more focused on an entertainment show than anything else.
