"Do you have anything to cut this rope?......wait, why do you have that knife!?"

That's pretty much all you need to answer your question. A person who makes that statement isn't going to have a reasonable dialogue or willingness to understand.

You're not an asshole for carrying and using a small fixed knife. You made a strategic mistake in handing it to, then holding it near, an inebriated person. But you already know that by now.

Tough break with your brother, I feel bad for his wife and daughter. I'm sure they deal with his unreasonable, if not alarming behavior on a daily basis. Perhaps your sister in law and niece had a disproportionate reaction because they knew they would have to deal with your brother's disproportionate reaction to cutting his hand. I would not take their reaction personally: people under emotional strain can lose their composure under otherwise normal circumstances. But you know them better than strangers on the internet.

Regardless, I hope their circumstances improve.
Yes he is quite a handful and the type of person you can only take in small doses, very obnoxious so that would make sense. I shouldn’t have given it to him I know that now unfortunately. Appreciate the comment.

Nothing much you can do now. In the future keep knives far away from idiots and drunks.
The injury was not the result of it being a fixed blade, but irratic behavior around a sharp tool of any type.
I tried to say that to him as well , but he said folding knives have multiple “safety features” whatever that means. I mean, a folding knife is basically a fixed blade with a self sheath. If that make sense.

If that’s the case, then, yes, it is your responsibility to avoid putting him in situations where his being impaired could harm him. In this case, that means avoid giving him a sharp knife.
I agree but I didn’t think he was that impaired that he couldn’t comprehend the concept of a sharp knife. But you live and learn I guess and I definitely learned my lesson after that one.

If it had been my brother. I would have handed him a grenade. Told to pull the pin and I guarantee the rope will be cut in 3seconds.

You wrote about giving an apology for his dumbass cutting himself. Should have had him apologize for being a flaming tool of a human being.

He got your knife dirty and didn't even clean it before giving it back.

Apologies... Yeah right.

Mass media indoctrination . Especially for folks that don't have a context for utility use, outside of the kitchen .

With few exceptions , fixed blades are usually shown in negative contexts for thrills and chills .

And the very act of carrying anything ,that can be used as a weapon, has become a politically polarized issue for many .
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So far as family dramas ...sigh ! You get to chose your personal friends , but not family .

I've always carried whatever I felt I needed , or just wanted to . But in public , normally well concealed .

I sometime will cut something for somebody, upon request , but very rarely ever hand my knife to anyone .

Lot of people now don't know what a sharp knife is ...or how to handle one .
Yes I think the media definitely has a role to play. How could knives ever be banned though? Anyone can take a Piece of steel and sharpen it to make a knife. Will only prevent the non violent people from carrying them while criminals still will. Will never hand my knife to anyone ever again. I’m pretty sure when I handed it to him I even said that exactly “be careful it’s sharp”

Let's see,

Your brother gets drunk in front of his own child.

He cuts himself with a knife and blames the knife and the owner of the knife, after asking for a knife.

He threatens you with bodily harm for his own stupidity.

If I had a brother like that, I wouldn't have a brother like that, I'd never see him again. I don't need a-holes in my life, family or not.

I also don't need wives or children of a-holes blaming me for their father/husband's stupidity.

You can't fix stupid. And you sure as hell can't fix drunk stupid.

I know that’s what’s shocking to me too!. They kept asking why I’m carrying around a giant knife and I kept telling them it’s actually quite small but they just didn’t get it.

Do they cut everything possible with scissors and never use a knife for anything?

Exactly. So weird too because he always talks about being into those types of things. So I thought it was nbd when I handed it to
Him. I
Guess I shouldn’t of handed it to him while he was drinking in the first place though.

There’s a reason me and my other brother are the only ones in the family who talk to
Him anymore. But thanks because i agree mostly

Respect but he came across as punk. Blaming you because your knife was sharp. Next time, tell him to whittle through it with his teeth.

Really? How are you responsible for your brother being a drunken dipshit, who asked for a knife. He obviously doesn’t know how to use one, if he did he would have stopped cutting himself much sooner to minimize his damage. I think your next encounter should have boundaries. No drinking, definitely no sharp objects. As far as your sister in law and niece, instructional videos on how to handle knives, this applies to the injured guy who threatened you if not being your brother, that’s funny shit by the way.
