I've been on several different forums asking what would be a good companion knife to accompany my Skinny Ash. The companion knifed purpose would be bushcraft, skinning and fishing.
I have had about 4 pm's on different sites and only one person thus far telling me to get a more useful knife and I wouldn't have to worry too much about the companion knife. 2 people have told me to get rid of the Ash and get a more useful main knife so I can get a better knife to compliment it.
What's the deal? I'm new to Busse and the Ash I recieved 3 days ago still hasn't been touched hardly(only because I took my wife to the hospital that day to have our 3rd child)

People either love or hate Busse knives. That knife you have is an awesome shtf knife. You would be fine with it solo. If I was buying a companion I would order the hrlm or swamp warden while you can. The scabs would be another nice companion. People on other forums are just jealous.

Some folks don't like any knife over about 4" for bushcraft and some folks don't baton, chop or use their knives hard.

For everyone else the Skinny ASH1 is great. :D

I think some people are used to having a really large blade and a really small companion knife for delicate work. The ash is really tough for the size of it (link to 6 part destruction test below). I really don't see why people would think the Ash is too large to be useful, I have always been of the mindset that you can perform most of the tasks with a large blade that you can with a small blade, but not the other way around. For the meanwhile, if you need to chop down trees, I would just get a $20-30 Fiskars/gerber ax until you find a large blade that fits your needs, I think alot of people get Busse skelly wardens, game wardens and hacks for companion knives. I love my Ash and think it is tough as nails for its thickness. hope this helps.

What's a hrlm?
I have a CABS coming but I think the sheath maker Martin feels it may be too big of a piggy back knife.
I am going to have him make a sheTh for the CABS too.
Actually I received an email from a Bladeforum member, who had my email address from a previous deal sYing this to me and that be knows of others who would agree.

Many, if not most Busse fans, like their knives fatter, but I think the skinny ASH was a great model -- in my opinion, skinnies are by far the best ASH. The skinny isn't a great chopper compared to some of the big, thick blades, but it batons well and is a very capable all-arounder. They carry much better in the field than those heavy knives, which seems to be lost on a lot of the people who bad-mouth them.

not true. i have a couple of them and i use them, they are well built, solid workhorses and i recommend them for their high performance. but they also have a very annoying purchasing program and a ridiculous fanbase of worshippers to the trough lol.

LOL... People are nuts....

I had mentioned in the knife sub-forum of a popular gun forum, that I had a few Busse
& Kin..... The next thin I knew,I was being jumped on by a pack of die-hard Mora
Fanboys (about 10 of them).... They started going off about how I waste my money on Busse, when I could
get a much better knife from Mora for 10- bucks...... LOL.....

There was no response from me needed... If they are that crazy, then there is absolutely nothing I can say....lol

The internet is serious business ...

You have a fine knife my friend!

I'm an ESEE fan and some have told me that I would have been better of with a ESEE-6.
I'm frustrated and just don't understand.

I think the Skinny ASH-1 is a very good all around knife. It can do light chopping, skinning, food preparation, and even bushcraft. And in a pinch, it's good combat knife, too. The design is really not all that different than some of the old knives used in frontier days, but it is made of better steel.

People either love or hate Busse knives.

That about sums it up.

I have been fighting the fight for ten years now, found out it really isnt worth the fight, then decided that people will think what they think no matter what the subject.

Busse knives, you either love them or you hate them, there doesn't seem to be a middle road. Either way its not worth fighting with those professional survivalists, they know what they know and that is all there is in the world. Or their world, however you want to look at it.

Just saw this, I have both. If you have one or the other your in very good shape. Either one will take what you throw at it and more, neither one is better or worse in the higher scheme of things. The two knives are very close in overall usage and under normal use both will excel.

many many people just love to hate Busse knives. I see it all over the place.

sometimes I try to talk sense into them, but most times I just laugh and shake my head.

You can't please everybody. Start looking at the .45acp and 9mm debates. Big domestic V-8, small import. Crotch rocket I4, cruiser v-twin. Blonde, redhead, brunette. ;) Hard use knife or thin little mora / axe combo.

There are many ways to skin the feline (sorry, Jaxx) and no right or wrong way to go about it. Just many roads to a destination.

You selected a road that many of us on this subforum chose. Most of us, content with our decision, are happy to let others go their own way. Unfortunately, there are others who need to belittle your decision to justify their own path due to their self-doubt.

Make yourself happy and don't let the fatherless grind you down.

If it works for you, you made the right decision.

I agree- it's jealousy.
Any Busse would be great by itself. It might take longer to do big chores with a smaller knife and vice versa, but it takes a lot to kill one.
If you're looking smaller find one you like the looks of- everyone has their own opinion.

I think the best deal going now is the ...or get a CABS from Busse.

I totally agree.

It's just the way of the internet Bro. You have to weed out the good honest info from all the meaningless drivel.

To be honest I saw your post in the ESEE forum and decided not to reply as I don't really agree with what goes on over there. I had an Izula piggybacked with a Scrap Yard SoD and liked the combo to a degree. I have medium sized hands and felt I could never get a good secure or comfortable grip on the Izula.

I have 2 Swamp Wardens, one cord wrapped and epoxied the other just as she came. I can get a great grip on either one though I prefer the cord wrap, and they are a great price.

On second thought, maybe they're right.

I'll be happy to purchase the Mora of your choice and make a clean swap for you.

Heck... I'll even buy two for you. ;)

Here are just few things the Skinny ASH1 can do:

Slice fruits and vegetables

ASH1021.jpg

Stick things!

ASH1018.jpg

Slash vines and brush.

ASH1015.jpg

Split kindling.

ASH1011.jpg

Chop wood.

ASH1007.jpg

Slice and notch wood.

ASH1005.jpg

Slash vegetation like a mini-machete.

ASH1004.jpg

And just generally do anything a good 6" blade knife does.

Be glad you own one.
