why are the best things illegal

Why are the best things illegal? Because you are a Thinker, that's why. There are three basic types of people in this country.

1. People who think and then go out and do it.
2. People who think and then do everything they can do to thwart group one.
3. People who don't care and sit and drink beer.

When politicians get bored of blowing people in public restrooms, they oftentimes get around to controlling or banning something because...they have to do SOMETHING, don't they?

Crisis creation. You have to get reelected or get your latest sexual or other deviant behavior out of the public's eye, start bitching about guns or whatever. Create the crisis, offer the solution to the crisis.

Then there are the people that just know better and they are going to tell everyone else how to live. At this point in our country's development, I really don't care about the titles people are given. A authoritarian conservative will make you a slave just as fast as a liberal will.

The reason why much of these things are illegal is because they don't tend to make a clean and fast kill on the prey.

Snares, traps etc while great for survival, have the capacity to induce hours or even days of pain onto the animal.

You are confusing things, leg hold type traps are still legal in most places as far as I know. The snare kills, the leg hold does not. So, the painful traps are actually legal in a lot of places where the killer traps are not.

This goes the same for small calibre hunting. Most .22 will not be allowed because they do not carry enough energy with them to "shock" the animal into instant death or incapacitation...

You mean they won't be allowed on large game. .22 Long Rifle, as far as I know, is legal for small game everywhere.

Slingshots can pack a punch, but only well placed hits causes incapacitation on vermints.

Varmints, right?

You have obviously never shot a cottontail rabbit with a wrist rocket.

New Jersey, The Land of No Left-Hand Turns. Hahaha...jug handles are a pain in the ass for people trying to find a place they have never been to before.

Absolute POWER absolutely corrupts. We can't even shave without being part of the system. We have gotten dependent on our system. Basically, us citizens have been weened or seduced off independence by "modern comforts". If any type of systemic collapse happened, where would you get longterm sustenance? Water?

The few of us survival types might be able to figure something out but in longterm there will be serious conflict.

Not a problem RR.
I know how NY can be. I have relatives in Upstate NY. They live in a rural area on a dairy farm.
I called NYSP before taking a handgun to see if it was even legal. The hoops one has to jump through to bring a handgun into that state are unreal. The only way to do it is to ship it to an FFL. Even then you must be registered to shoot in an NRA sanctioned event.
All I wanted to do was some plinking with my .22's. So much for freedom, huh?

Well. Think about it. I live in upstate New York and I've had a pistol permit for 28 years, a privelege that I respect and cherish. Do I want some yahoos crossing into my state to do "some plinking with my .22's." (or .357's or .45's) ? No. Do our state police want that? No. I'm no fan of gun control, but I am a fan of controlling people who might be carrying guns.

I could go off on another tangent about how the 12 ga. shotgun is probably the deadliest weapon in the world and all you need to buy one up here is a driver's license, presuming you don't have a criminal background. But that's another thread.

I don't really have a problem with responsible people crossing into my state to plink. I don't find everyone to be a "yahoo" and don't find "plinking" to be particularly life threatening and in any event, I have enough "yahoos" in my own state that I don't have to be paranoid about foreign interlopers from Pennsylvania...

You're in the right state friend! :D

That is to say that you don't consider gun ownership a right but a privilege granted by the State of New York.

Illegal things are fun. Fun must be banned, to maintain control.

In this particular case, I believe all of the blame can be directed at NYC.

From my experience banning certain hunting/food gathering practices is correlated to population. Out in the bush with a thin pop. these rules, if they exist, are likely to be a very low priority for law enforcement. However, in a densely populated areas like some parts of New York state or Southern Ontario enforcement is strict. Some of the multiple reasons are human injury (lots of people), pet injury, property damage, lower wildlife numbers, etc. It basicly boils down to the more people in an area, the more laws are issued to allow them to live with each other in close quarters.

Coldwood,
I never said I wanted to carry it while in NY. (Its got a 7" bbl. Not exactly a carry piece) It would have been transported in the same manner that most other states deem legal. cased, and in the trunk. No ammo.

Do you honestly think that the "yahoos" that carry guns without a permit would take the steps I took in order to stay on the right side of the law? Or are they comming into NY without giving a rats *** what the law might require?

Rupe

Don't try to be reasonable with the unreasonable.

Don't try to be logical with the illogical.

Don't try to be rational with the irrational.

The statement(s) put forth are Schumeristic and Spitzeresk, no yahoos exist in New York, this is why New York is trying to sue gun manufacturers and gun dealers in other states...it couldn't possibly be the completely f*cked up way criminals are dealt with there...or...
