Why are they so expencive???

Tang stamp says: Buck USA (in two lines)

Only the term "Made in USA" requires all significant parts of the product to be made in the USA.

Buck USA, may refer to the knife being made in the US or to Buck being a US base company.

Having said that, I don't know where they are being made nor would I make a claim knowing where they are being made.

Hi Jackknife. I'm not going to argue with you. Obviously MSRP of $35 was not correct.

At any rate, shop time in the US for mfr is about $60/hour or $1.00 per minute. CNC time, laser time, etc. is more. When a machinist goes to the washroom, it costs the company $5.00.

With that in mind, it is easier to understand why the costs are more.

Without considering material costs, to make 3 blades, shape, grind, heat-treat, polish, sharpen and package takes more than a couple of minutes. Add to that, the handle, liners, scales, pins, springs, nail nicks, assembly, finishing, rejects, returns, advertising, reps commisions, etc. certainly takes a few more minutes.

Dealer price is usually much less than MSRP, distributors also take a cut. Between the selling price from the factory, and the mfg costs, comes tooling, R&D, improvement, insurance, legal fees, overhead, and also, I might add, profit.

Then add in the material costs plus the shipping of those materials, etc.

thoughts to share.

Manufacturer's charge what the market will bear...simple. If they can make a knife for $10 and sell it for a $100 they will. If you want an idea of the true cost of things, look at the close out prices on knives.

If you want to compare old with new and keep it in America, then compare the spyderco Spyker with the Schatt and Morgan English Jack. Both are "limited edition" American made products. The Spyker has an MSRP of $250 and the English Jack $140 from the AGR site. The Spyker is G10, S30V with inlays of carbon fiber. Lots of weird grinds and holes in the blade. It appears to be a machined product that is screwed together. The English Jack has the same size blade (but gives you two of them). It has bone handles, nickel silver bolsters, a shield, ATS34 steel, nail nick, polished liners, and pinned construction. IMHO Schat and Morgans have a better fit and finish than spydercos. Sypercos are state of the art; English Jack is supposedly built somewhat by hand using ancient technology with 70 year old equipment. Why the $100 price difference? Because that is what the market will bear. The SPyderco is "tatical", has a fancy steel, a little bit of carbon fiber and a fancy designer name.

People charge what they can get...there is no such thing as a "fair" price. Who is the sheriff that supposedly sets the maximum profit margins? There is nothing wrong with people making money. It's the American way. If you don't like the price/value...don't buy it.

Sebenza costs about $20 to produce give or take a few dollars the rest is profit for the manufacturer or the seller in this case they are one and the same.
The truth is that a $100 dollar item in a store cost only about 1/10 of that for the store to purchase from the manufacturer. This is why we have 50% 70% sales and even 80%. etc.
