Why Baton?

Yes it is a way to get dry wood when everything is wet. But you don't stop there, the next step is to featherstick that dry wood which is suitable for use with a ferro rod.
But i always check the weather and if it will rain i just stay at home. So i always use a foldable twig stove, no knife needed.
I went on a hunting trip once that was dry when we left camp, sprinkles turned into full rain that turned into snow at elevation. 3 of us came off that hill soaking wet head to toe and on the way to hypothermic. We found a spot and made a fire. Loading up and going home wasn't in the cards. Sometimes nature requires skills.

We're two pages in here, where the hell is @91bravo ;)

A batoning thread without him feels like a Bark River thread since Shane left 🤣
I wondered what happened to Shane. Why did he leave?
That movie would last about 0.0003 seconds today, before the "butthurt" crowd would burn-down the theater.

It would last longer than Blazing Saddles!
Some of my favorite movies. I miss pre 2000's movies. Cinematography is a lost art form. I love the way movies like "Bullet" and "Dirty Harry" were filmed with sweeping aerial shots.

That soaking rain when it is really cold is miserable. Funny to even think about trusting a forecast up here! Friggin weather changes all the time, and from one area to the next. Plus, we have more than 7 months of snow so I guess we should only venture outside when we visit warm sunny places. 🤣 I will continue to pack all the stuff I need.

Mesquite sure does give them the bends, don't it?

Bruh. Amen.

I know a lotta' folks here despise Mike Stewart. (*BRK) Despite that, when I had a rare opportunity to speak with him...and he learned of my "geography"...he warned me about South Texas "hardwoods". (*"Mesquite" and "Oak", in particular) He told me that, even with A2 and 3V, Mesquite could wreak havoc on the toughest of blades.

Here's a little South Texas "hardwood" putting the "bends" to 210-thousandths of INFI...

It wasn't something I really followed so I'm not sure exactly what happened. I did notice his absence and then I remember it being mentioned in a thread somewhere. I got the impression that he got a cooling off period from the mods and then decided not to return, but I could be wrong. If that's the case I understand his position, but hopefully he makes his way back at some point.
