Because it sure is comforting when you are alone in the woods and see stuff like this.

A possum did'nt make them marks

I think I would rather have a big gun iffin I saw that. :D

Yeah me too, but you can't exactly carry a BFG and only have a lil slippy :D Don't get me wrong though, I love my slippies, but you also need a BFK

a 44 magnum is more than enough to kill i mean, give me confidence over any natural mammal in north america :) or give me time for the rifle.

knife only? geez man, i LIKE my body parts, sure, i'd try as hell to win, but ONLY a knife? gawds.

Regardless of what knife you're carrying, the fella who left those marks on the tree is carrying bigger knives than you are. That sumbitch is bringing a couple handfuls of Machax's and Smatchets to the party...and he ain't afraid to use them.

Edited to add: Spent a few months in Alaska doing survival training back in the 70's. Instructor told us that if we're attacked by a bear, the best defense is simply to go limp and play dead. There's a decent chance the bear will cease the attack and you might escape without fatal injuries. One of the students remarked, "You're saying we shouldn't try to fight back?" Instructor says, "Only if your life's ambition is to become a steaming pile of bear shit." Seemed to get the point across....

This falls sorta into my theory, I think it should be legal to hunt anything anywhere anytime as long as you use a knife. I think it should be open knife season year round on any animal :D Who's down for some big game knife hunting :D

An old hunting guide I knew told me that one of his rules
When going in to bear or big
Cat country is all ways carry
A firearm with hard cast bullets or at least some fmj
Rounds ... he told me legal or
Not he would carry his six inch 357 mag anywhere
He heard of bear or big cat
Activity ! As he said he rather
Be alive and pay a fine then
Be mauled and or killed !

Um, yes, a big knife will really be useful... you can just side-step the charging bear and stab it in the heart.

reminds me of the old joke-

A greenhorn asked a old guide if he had any advice on hunting bears with a handgun. The guide said "yep, always file the front site off" why asked the greenhorn, is it so you can make a faster draw? The ol' guide spat some 'baccer juice, squinted at the young feller and said "nope........it's so when the bear shoves that pea-shooter up your A** it won't hurt so bad getting it out"

You guys know what KA-Bar stands for don't you?

"The owner of the KA-BAR trademark, the Union Cutlery Co. of Olean, New York, began using the name on its knives and in its advertising in 1923 after receiving a testimonial letter by a fur trapper, who used the knife to kill a wounded bear that attacked him after his rifle jammed.[6] According to company records, the letter was only partially legible, with "kill-ab' ar" readable as fragments of the phrase "kill a bear". In 1923, the company adopted the name KA-BAR from the "bear story" as their trademark."

Yes - very thoughtful to carry a big knife if you're at risk of being attacked by a bear. He can use it as a toothpick once he's done.

Don't rule out the possibility of a genetically modified, mutant possum.

I always had a problem believing 17 Hornady Critical Defense hollowpoints fired from my XD9 at high speed and close range at ANY animals head would just be 'shrugged off'. I'm not looking to test that theory, but it doesn't make sense to me.

Funny thing, me and willis loaded up and spent the day roaming that area in the hopes of being attacked. Its in a place where bears are protected. We roamed that whole area all day, him sporting a Kabar 1217 and a BK7. No guns allowed, according to teh feds.

Saw hog wallers the size of 5 parking spots at Wal mart and lots of them, crushed hog traps, wood laying across the trail, worn smooth from bellys and backs. Hoof prints the size of the bottom of a Nalgene bottle.

Willis, you still got that pic we took next to my hand for size?

Anyways, we call it Bear Alley. We found more signs of black bear inhabitation, than most other places we travel in the Smokies.

Willis was the first to find it, on a trout trip, then, we went back a couple of times, hoping to see some bear. Or hog.

Trust me, if we had been set upon, whatever critter it was, was gonna die, or work real hard for its dinner that day.

This is why it should be totally legal to carry knives. I know I live in NYC and would never have this happen, however had on the insane chance that it did, if I survived I would have been arrested for possession.
