I'm NEVER out of reach of a rifle or my .44 S&W 629 around the ranch. Anytime I set foot out the door I have (preferably) a rifle in hand or at the very least the .44 Mag. We have mtn lions in NW Arizona. I've had an close encounter with one before - he did his best to get me but I killed him with a rifle. He was within 8-10 feet of me by the time it was over.
Um, yes, a big knife will really be useful... you can just side-step the charging bear and stab it in the heart.

Funny thing, me and willis loaded up and spent the day roaming that area in the hopes of being attacked. Its in a place where bears are protected. We roamed that whole area all day, him sporting a Kabar 1217 and a BK7. No guns allowed, according to teh feds.
Saw hog wallers the size of 5 parking spots at Wal mart and lots of them, crushed hog traps, wood laying across the trail, worn smooth from bellys and backs. Hoof prints the size of the bottom of a Nalgene bottle.
Willis, you still got that pic we took next to my hand for size?
Anyways, we call it Bear Alley. We found more signs of black bear inhabitation, than most other places we travel in the Smokies.
Willis was the first to find it, on a trout trip, then, we went back a couple of times, hoping to see some bear. Or hog.
Trust me, if we had been set upon, whatever critter it was, was gonna die, or work real hard for its dinner that day.
