Why carry a big knife?

This is why it should be totally legal to carry knives. I know I live in NYC and would never have this happen, however had on the insane chance that it did, if I survived I would have been arrested for possession.

I also carry a gun too. Everywhere. There was some 230gr Speer Goldots ready to launch when willis took those pics as well. I never go anywhere without a sidearm. Especially in bear country.

I'll tell you too, few things in this world scare me as much as big cats. When I used to live in Texas, mountain lions where a problem. I got to watch one stalk some prey through a set of binoculars once, scared me to my core.

Never seen anything like it, hope to never see it again. Something that weighs over 100lbs, claws, teeth, eats meat, and doesn't make a sound. Now, that's some scary stuff.

Ain't nothing on this green earth that a 5gal. can of gas with a road flare strapped to it wont take down. It'll even be cooked when it's all said and done. Up here we call it a "Moosez Special".

I've got at least one on my ranch right now. I've lost a lot of calves to coyotes over the past few years, but about two months ago, the coyote activity around my land came to an abrupt halt. Then, three weeks ago, I lost two calves and a heifer and found big cat tracks nearby. I called the game warden and TPW. The game warden told me there have been a few other reports locally, but no one has actually seen the damn thing(s) yet and TPW is hesitant to confirm that the cougars are back in this area for fear of causing a panic. Officially, they say it's probably "big bobcats" since they don't have any clear evidence. I'd love to see a bobcat take down a 800lb cow by itself.

Also, the deer and hogs seem to be moving around a lot less, too. There's a big alpha predator out there in the Piney Woods and I'm pretty sure it's not a big bobcat. It's only a matter of time before one shows up on a game camera around here. The game warden told me to call him if I got pictures of a cougar out there. I told him that if I was close enough to take a picture, I wouldn't be shooting with a camera. He said the fines are steep for shooting protected species. I told him I have 3200 acres and a backhoe...

Bad enough getting eaten by a bear...worse to get eaten by a flaming bear. Just my opinion... :)

I actually don't chop brush with my BHK Machete, and it is razor sharp. The BK9 does the chopping. The BHK goes through meat like a lightsaber. I carry sometimes, but I'm always loaded with sharp, pointy things....

I also mark my territory while camping with pepper gel/spray..

I thought the "Moosez Special" involved a couple of hobos passing out pamphlets during the fire.

I have only seen a few bears in the Smoky Mtns. that skeered me.The average black bear would would lose and I ain't funnin' neither. That place makes you feel alive when you are in there. There are more bears in the Smoky Mtns. now than there ever has been since the chesnut blight arrived.

Thats the new Extended Version.

Couple of gallons of gas is alot lug through the woods. Might have to seek another alternative. :D

We like to carry a few "bear stickies". Simple to make really, just need some treble hooks and short fused dynamite.

... black bear? y'all need to come on up here to western Montana and play w/ some of our bears. We got some blacks but the big boy is these woods is the Grizzly, ya they ain't no Kodiak but the ones I have seen were more than big enough to make me wish I had more than a 9MM on me. We have the big cats up here also but they get hunted so they seem to stay out of sight most of the time. I agree though that the cats are more scary than the bears imo.

Um, yes, a big knife will really be useful... you can just side-step the charging bear and stab it in the heart.

i just wrestle the bears around these parts.

side note- i bet its harder to "sidestep a 350-450 lb bear charging you at 25-30mph" best thing to do would be to make yourself big and intimidating while yelling at it. besides you can't out climb a bear up a tree or outrun a bear either. only fighting chance you have for escape is a full out sprint down a stepper incline because due to their body shape they have difficulties keeping speed down a hill. buy bear mace!

Seriously this time. The last time we were hiking in Big South Fork a ranger gave us a "bear horn" to carry. Just a really loud air horn and he said they'd had good luck with them. We didn't have to test it out, but I'm thinking if you got between a mom and her cubs somehow, it wouldn't help you much.

I picture a couple of big Browns sitting around the campfire, picking their teeth and saying, "You know, these honkers taste just like those screamers we used to eat..."

Most of the black bears here, would shit and run away if they even saw you. Unless you are between them and a) their cubs b) their food. Other than that, they runn so fast, you won't know what you saw.

I have seen a couple gettin' their rampage on, though. In Cades Cove mostly. Rangers will stop cars, make everyone stay inside, and let the bear rampage right on through. Seen a black bear chasing a deer in a mulberry thicket too. Coolest thing ever. Deer got away, and Mr. Bruin, sat down and started snacking on mulberrys. Funny as hell.

I've never seen a brown bear, of any kind. Not sure I would want to see one up close either.

I don't know what I would do if I was in a tough spot with one, but I know I can't outrun it, out climb it, or out smart it, so, my only option is to try to scare it away, or get ready for a fight. I would probably die, but I'm not gonna go out lying on the ground trying to pretend I'm dead.

Read a story about a guy in OutdoorLife, that killed a brown with a Buck 110, and a ton of testicular fortitude. Lost an arm, but he won and the bear didn't. Sounded like a helluva good war too.

Give it a read. http://www.outdoorlife.com/node/45097

I read here somewhere about this old fella used to hunt bears with the bowies he made, but he used dogs to attack/distract the bear while he sidestepped and stabbed.

Oh, and it's called a "Chupa cabra", not Jupa Cabra. Literally, it means "goat sucker".

The Browns making the comments about honkers and screamers... that sounds straight up Gary Larson's alley, lol!

I partial to 12 gauge slugs, but I'd rather have a big knife than empty hands.

Last year we were at a camp up in the Donnor Pass/Lake Tahoe area and having a small BBQ. A Californina Brown bear (brown fir black bear) got to within 15-20 feet of us before we knew it. I had a knife, but he looked huge:D

And the knife looked tiny.

Whew.
