This is the name of a good thread at CPF with 300+ posts to give lots of reasons! :) $300 budget is pretty nice for an item you don't think you need.

i would spend half or less on a flashlight, and the rest take your family out for good mexican food and few margharita's for the one buying.:D

yeah +1 on the indestructible but it suck all the power of my 3500 mah batteries in 2 hours....... but the alkaline are okay.. dunno why

300 dollar flashlight recommendations? Can't help with that.

I carry a streamlight stylus pro. It's about 20 bucks, powerful enough, uses common batteries (2 AAAs), and is small enough not to be obtrusive.

The reason I carry a flashlight is because I can't see in the dark and it is dark often.

I've noticed that a lot of knife people also seem to carry flashlights, I can't figure out why. Can someone please explain this to me? also, what would be a good Flashlight in the $300- range? in case I get convinced to buy one :D

Several reasons:
If you drive a car and get stranded in the middle of nowhere, or... in a dimly lit part of the city.
You find yourself in a black out situation in your home, your apt building, your town, city, or the electric grid goes down by accident or "on purpose".
You find yourself down below in a subway train and the power goes out, which I have.
You find yourself in a post hurricane or tornado situation where there's no electricity for days or weeks... I went through Sandy.
You are in a building collapse.
You are hassled by a street beggar or aggressor and you have a powerful light with a disorienting strobe mode.
Every Woman should carry a light in her hand bag, pack or car.
I could go on with potential situations... but a flash light is A MUST EDC.

I EDC 3, yes... three every time I leave the house.
I live a half a mile from where the World Trade Towers once stood.... we are living in a post 911 world: "If your not prepared, you're never prepared".

For those running android smartphones there is a very handy little application called "nexus flashlight" by "nionsoftware" that allows you to turn the camera flash on and off. It makes a useful backup light for looking at stuff close up.

I think some android phones already have an app built in.

It just says 'assisted light' and turns on instantly when pressed, nothing to open etc.

I have the Klarus XT11 also. I carry it on my belt at work every day and use it very day, multiple times. That light has been dropped from above ceiling height and waist heights too many times to count and the thing keeps on chugging. The UI cannot be beat as far as tactical simplicity. Love that light.

This is a good little light, I also sometimes carry a Fenix LD15. One AA battery and it is not much bigger than a tube of lip balm. Back office with no windows + a power outage = "glad I have this compact light with me".

I don't carry a tactical style flashlight around, but I do carry a 4Sevens Preon as part of my EDC. It's a very small AAA light that's the circumference of a pen and half the length.

There have been numerous times at night where a flashlight was needed. I've dropped things, my kids have dropped things, people with car problems, etc. Not to mention that your car may break down on a remote road with no road lights...

The 1st time you are in a facility with no windows and storms cut the power, you wouldn't believe how bright the luminous face of a watch is if no one has a pocket flashlight. I carry two anytime I am dressed .

Because living in a sub-tropic island sucks around July~October, way too many tropic storms that can do nasty things, going from power failure to ripped out windows to two floor high flash floods. All of which having a good reliable light source is a very nice plus.
Because it's illegal to own and carry firearms in some countries. A quick 150+ lumens to the face at night is enough to gain the upper hand even in moderately lit areas.
Because I have to make my way through a four story building in the dark to get to my studio apartment cause the landlord couldn't be bother to fix the lights.
Because having one while being stranded in the wild at night when the rescue team is searching is very helpful.
Because I can send/read Morse code

And....way too many to list.

 A small flashlight is just a useful tool, the uses of which have already been given. I always have a Mini Maglite (2 AAA cells) clipped in my shirt pocket, next to ball point pens. The model I use is not a "tactical" light, just a useful tool for me - an overgrown Boy Scout and MacGyver clone.

Other flashlights can be smaller (keychain, 1 AAA cell or similar) or larger (2 AA cells in a belt holster) but they are useful tools to carry and to have when needed.

I carry a flashlight because I can't see in the dark. That's why light bulbs are used indoors, and there's lights on streets, and cars have headlights.

But even then, I wear my sunglasses at night so I can so I can keep track of the visions in my eyes.

I work in an office environment and I use one at least once a week. Looking for network drops, phone drops, dropped items...

many daily uses. I just use a cheap-o 3 AAA battery LED light. I've not needed anything greater than that at work. I do have a few 3 D cell Mag lights for home/camping/garage/etc. but for daily carry, just a cheap one.

Because its dark and I need to see. You can go the high-end route, browse the candlepower forums with the torch-heads. Its just as addictive (and pricey) as blades.

I have a Fenix in the center console of my vehicle. 4Sevens in my pocket, and surefire by my bedside.

The day gets dark and a flashlight can always come in handy. I enjoy well built USA flashlights too, it is something about the quality and the amount of power from such small flashlights. Most of these flashlights can be used in daily tasks to as they brighten up everything. Instead of buying on flashlight for $300- I would get multiple. I like fenix and foursevens personally. The PD30, PD32, and PD35 by Fenix are all great lights and under $70. I am a fan of the Preon one for an edc flashlight because it is very small and lightweight, yet produces enough light for my daily uses I might need it for.
