why carry a folder unless you work in a "professional" setting?

A lot of it is due to legal reasons....

Or even if you can have a fixed blade on your belt it wouldn't be accepted very well in certain places like stores etc.

I sure wouldn't go into my local Target or Grocery store with a Busse Battle Mistress on my belt. Even if I did get in the door I am sure the law would be called soon after even though it's legal for me to do so.

It's about using common since....

:D Busse Battle Mistress on the belt, I agree it's where you work, where you go and what you do. Fixed blades are nice but it's easier to carry a folder, almost EVERYONES pants have pockets. My job PROBABLY wouldn't like me carrying a fixed blade.

Y'all ain't from around here, are ya?

Here in California, almost everything is alarming to some folks.

That's the same for a lot of places these days. ;)

All it takes is for one Sheeple to call 911.... ;)

I carry a bunch of crap and folders are more compact. They are fun to flick.

I've had one folder fail on me. I was prying something, and knew I would prob trash the knife, but it was handy, and I didn't like it much anyway (cheap Browning linerlock) That's the only folder I've had fail on me, it was big time abuse, and I knew I was gonna break the knife.

I honestly have to say that I wish I were. I stay close to the VA hospital at the moment, or I'd be in Arizona ... well, that and the weather.:D

There's a VA in Tucson, but I can't blame you on the weather. I keep waiting for "THE BIG ONE" to hit so I can have beachfront property in Arizona. :p

I prefer folders over fixed blades in almost all situations. I really like the "mechanical-ness" of folders and the engineering involved in making all the little bits and pieces funtion correctly and still look good. I find fixed blades to be a little (ok, a lot) boring, just handle material attached to steel. I'm not trying to talk trash about the hand made artistic knives that nobody would ever actually use, because there is some incredible skill involved there. I'm talking about something like my ESEE-3, yes it's a bad ass knife but it's just not interesting to me like my BM Presideo is.

Aside from that, folders are easier to carry, are smaller, lighter and there are many more options for finding a folder over a fixed blade that you can use and carry all the time.

Just an observation on my part, and not trying to rock the boat too much, but... That knife in the OPs pocket looks as though it's never really been used. I know it's not a detailed photo but I can't see any dings or scratches on the handle or anything. It seems as though he could probably get away with carrying the same Vic Soldier that I carry and use on a daily basis and have no worries about breaking it in half. Just a thought, please don't read too much into it.

mine is simple i drive a truck through many states.im not up on the laws of all the states but ive never had a problem with my four and a half inch folder

Good grief man, why do you think pants have more than one pocket:confused::p

Even a thin bladed folder is tougher than you think it is. I don't care for overly thick fixed blades either.

Sad, isn't it. I grew up in the fifty's/early sixty's when things were a lot, lot different. Not all, perhaps only a few, of the changes since then have been for the better. When I was a kid everyone carried a knife. Nowadays if you pull out a Vic Classic someone's going to want to call 911.

I know there's a VA in Tucson ... I checked awhile back, because I really was serious about wanting to get away from here. Unfortunately, it's so bloody hot there. Besides, can you imagine what island property is going to be worth here after the big one (not that I can afford property)?

I carry a ZT 300 daily and can't imagine it failing me but I do favor fixed blades. Living and working in Los Angeles county, CA fixed blade carry is just a pain. And I just don't feel like having my shirt tucked in all the time to completely reveal my blade. But that's just me.

in fayetteNam everyone has a knife a large fixed blade hanging out would just make you look like a dork but a reasonable sized one in a pair of jeans isnt an issue but with no belt on i go with a folder

I would not be happy carrying around a ball-hungry piranha which is kept separate from my tasty man-jewels by just a thin bit of dead animal...

Sig line? I have carried all kinds and sizes of FBs. My boss wouldn't have a problem with me openly carrying a G20, but a "rambo knife" is off limits. I do like my izula though!

And people will do it in a hillbilly heartbeat too I am telling you...

Boy, howdy, they will. I seen 'em do it with ma own two eyes.

I saw that exact thing happen at the library not too long ago when a woman got all freaked out over a guy's little slippy (about an inch and a half blade). You have no idea how tempted I was to reach in my pocket and pull out my knife (it was only a Vic Farmer, but it was bigger that the one she was flipping out over), and say "Knoife? That's not a knoife, this is a knoife." but I'm pretty sure she and the security guard would have failed to see the humor in it.:(

I have seen it happen too, more than once over the years.

Too many people around these days that flip out way too easy....

That's the very reason why I conceal mine, I just don't want the hassle...

I prefer fixed blades because they're much easier to clean and involve far less maintenance. I like my folders, but if I could carry a fixed blade without any questions asked, I would.

In all fairness, I do have to say that everyone else was looking at her like she was from a different planet, a look like "are you serious, lady?" Unfortunately, she was.

Like you, I keep mine out of sight.

I personally think most of you guy are exaggerating a bit about people/co-workers calling 911 over a Vic Classic. Give me one instance of a key chain pen knife causing the cops to be called rather than just pretending you are James Dean rebelling against all that authority out to hold you down. When the airports started confiscating them, I was astounded at just how many people, male and female, actually had a Vic hanging on their key ring. Seemed like over 50% of the U.S. population
