Why Carry Big knives?

You ever try to cut a watermelon with a Case Peanut? Too messy. And I might be a Texan but walking around the streets with a bowie knife on my hip would create the need for self defense, not solve it.

No I don't carry that Randall daily - dang! Much as I would like social pressure, laws, and workplace rule dictate otherwise. I always carry a folder - usually a Spyderco or Benchmade (although I really do like the CRKT Kaspar). But here too I lean towards the larger models. Here is California we can carry any sized folder without running afoul of most laws (schools are an exception). But I still like the fixed blade

Cause some of us like knives that don't come in smaller blade sizes

Or if they do, aren't as comfortable or reliable as their larger counterparts. I know that mini SOCOMs sometimes had problems with MT's version of a liner lock but the full sized ones don't.

Hey Elvis, I thought that Texans liked everything bigger than the rest of us? Guess not.

The bottom line, as I see it, is that there probably isn't any reason to carry a large blade on a daily basis. But, it sure would be nice if there was!!!

Unfortunatly there is a 4" blade length limit where I live so when I choose to excercise a bit of civil disobedience and carry my Sifu or a concealed fixed blade I also carry a more socially acceptable knife for those times when less is more.

Hmm, I carry a BM CQC-7 for most tasks and sometimes a MT UDT partial serrated for opening letters and other stuff. I keep it on me cause I hardly use it, so I always have a super sharp knife. I also carry a Spyderco Military alot as well, for those things that absolutly have to be cut right now!

I carry a HK USP compact .40 caliber pistol for self defense. And I might add a Fallkniven G1 Garn when it comes out.

Do it right,or not at all.

I've backed down armed street assailants *twice* now, in about 18 years of always having a blade on me. Not too bad a record. Both cases involved "megafolders" (more than 4" worth of blade). In both cases, the assailants were armed with "short heavy clubs" (hammers in one case, a wrench in the other).

"Chase-offs" are a hell of a lot cheaper than the cops/lawyers/doctors route an actual "knife fight" will entail.

I've given knives as gifts to five people now. I've got confirmation two of those were used in chase-offs, a possible report on a third. All this happened in the Richmond/Berkeley/Oakland California corridor, except my first incident with a single wrench-armed bum in San Fran's "Tenderloin" area about...eight years ago.

There are too few mega folders. Deeper penetration and more damage with a large blade. Why defend yourself with a tooth pick of a knife? I want a weapon with more reach and greater impact if my life depended on it.

Why carry big....first off I don't consider my everpresent 710 or even my sifu I sometimes carry as BIG...merely 'full sized'. As for the 'why'...well since I have no criminal intent I consider it my right....and luckily my state agrees with me. Useful...yes without doubt. Have had more than one occassion where I've cut hoses and belts and more when my small 'watch pocket' blade I also always carry was not the best choice...and more blade was desired and used. Course I'll always carry a small 3blader also, naked without. As for 'extra duty' I can say for sure that my 710 was large enough to discourage further involvement in what for me was a 'close call'. Another reason I prefer a nonblack blade....If I open it up I want it to be seen...I ain't no ninja.

Knives are knives no matter how big or how small. Firearms are just firearms no matter what the action or cal. Neither should be reffered to as a "weapon" until they are used in a illegal "offensive" way.
Here in Canada due to the squeeky wheel syndrome and narrow minded polititions I cannot carry a handgun. However I can carry as much blade as I want any time I want, with a few noted exceptions and it is not considered a a weapon unless used as such.
However I still only daily carry about 3.5 in. of blade lenght. How many is dependant upon where I am going.

Interesting how we see laws drawing aline at 4" yet there are no laws (ASAIK) which say that a .22 or .25 is OK but a .9mm, .357 or .44 is NG.

Where ever the "line" is drawn, bad guys will ignore it leaving the rest of us to face consequences, either with the BGs or the Law!

Medusaoblongata's response is the most succinct. The question is not "why?" but "why not?" It shouldn't even be an issue. What does it matter what a person chooses to carry? If a big knife works better (and "better" is a relative term) for that person then fine. If not then theres plenty of small stuff to choose from or get the best of both worlds and carry both.

I've been a bit surprised to find out how many makers and other knife folks seem to have a bit of disdain for mega-folders and their users. Are mega-folder fans percieved as 2nd class knife citizens or something? Is this due to some mis-precieved or mis-guided rendition of knife world political correctness? Or is it a form of snobbery in that "real knife" users don't really need big blades? Whatever the case there is something strange going on here.
Personally I like all knives big or small and don't care one wit what knife someone else is carrying as long as they're carrying something, however once you carry a mega-folder Its hard to go back.

The knife market is flooded with small a_ss knives, too many to choose from but there is a real lack of mega size folders. I have been emailing Benchmade to make larger folders but they keep coming out with tooth picks.

First of all, I don't think there should be any laws regulating what law-abiding citizens can carry (knife or firearm).
Having said that: I don't see why anyone would want to carry anything heavier than a Schrade LB7 (or Buck 110) everyday. I MIGHT carry a big blade if I were going camping or hiking but not everyday. I have noticed one thing...when I see a big-huge-blade it's usually in the hands of someone who is rather young. There are some exceptions but I don't see many old-timers with anything bigger than a Buck 110. The older I get the more I respect my father's wisdom.
Maybe some guys are trying to compensate for some other "short-coming"?

"allenC" you are going to feel real inadequate when some punks surround you and take your toothpick from you. Pull out a puny knife and they will laugh at you, then they will kill you.

Nonbox, if you're surrounded by a bunch of "young punks" then it may already be too late, but your feet would be better than a big-blade (like RUN!). Besides, do you think a bunch of thugs would be unarmed these days?

One-on-one? Sure.
Two-on-one? Maybe.
Surrounded? Adios amigo.

Actually, you would probably defend yourself better with a strong walking-cane (and it's legal). But to each his own, if you like big knives then great.

BIG knives intimidate but has a good reach.. Surviving a confrontation really depends on how you handle the blade. For me, it'll be a 3" folder or fixed blade...
