Why Carry Big knives?

Keep dreaming. A 26" battle stick could be better then a folder but to accelerate a walking stick,(and I collect walking sticks who are possible self-defence weapons) you need lots of space and time which you will have just once or twice, and that's not enough for multiple attackers. As long as I can carry even swords legally, I will carry my project 1 in a waistpack or my trailmaster in a dundeerig. Should this be over one time I will switch to Finders stickflutes (Just make them a little heavier

Sorry for the harsh beginning, but this was too much.

Actually, you would probably defend yourself better with a strong walking-cane (and it's legal). But to each his own, if you like big knives then great.

With multiple Attackers your weapon can be too big. As told above, you need room with a long weapon and it is easier to disarm you also. See http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000930.html

KurtisKurt, the url you gave us is linked to a post about a sword in a brawl, not a folding blade.

The best weapon is a gun, shotgun, assault rife, but if I did not have a fire arm I would want a fixed blade or a big folding knife.

The one thing I must note is that nobody except for the psters talking about cleaning fish or cutting watermelons has given a reason for carrying a big knife that didn't have something to do with self defense. That goes back to the original point of this post, a big knife has no value for daily utility which is my main consideration.

I don't know if its' made National News or not, but lately in Seattle, WA, there has been a rash of beatings in downtown areas. There was even a RAPE of a MAN from Portland.

Do I carry a BIG-assed knife while
"strolling" around?

HELL YES! I carry my CRKT LARGE Crawford/Kasper Fighting Folder, and usually my Cold Steel Stainless Tanto in an IWB sheath. And I PRACTICE with BOTH of them!

If I found myself "under attack" buy a group of "thugs", I GUARANTEE that I would NOT be an "easy" VICTIM! (Of course, I have also been know to carry a couple of .40 caliber Glock Pistols...

With the threat of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis, and how close you have to get to your attacker, and the legal aspects, I can think of better things to use for self-defence than a knife.
I also believe that most street attacks occur because the victim was not aware of their surroundings and placed themselves in dangerous situations.
I'm not saying the victim is to blame, but there is a reason people don't walk through some parts of town after dark. How many times have women been raped while jogging through Centrel Park at night? Don't they read the news? They always think "It can't happen to me".

If you want a reason other than self defense, read the article in this month's BLADE (I think it is this month). The article is on knives for lefties, but it starts out talking about a guy that could have really used bigger (and better) knives than he had. He wrecked his truck, and proceeded to lay for over a day in a ravine because he didn't have enough knife to hack through the crap around him (wood, not the truck body). In fact, it makes a good reason for carrying a BK&T Brute as often as possible... at least in your automobile.

I like the 4 1/smidgeon" inch blade on my Apogee because it is long enough to slice through most sandwiches, burritos, fruit etcetera, without getting a buch of gunk in the pivot. It seems just the right length for general utility, self-defense aside.

Another good point about the threat of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis, AllenC.

Perhaps an ASP expandable baton is the answer. For self defense I recommend FOX pepper spray and a mega folder and an ASP. Better to be safe than sorry. There is no joy in knife collecting if you are in a coma or dead.
