Why cut corners on the sheath?

So, having recently joined the Becker clan, i have to say that my BK7 is built like a brick sh*thouse.

So, with the awesome quality of the knife, why does Becker cut corners on their sheaths for the BK7 and BK9?

I know they are CAPABLE of making a good kydex sheath, because the ones that come with their other knives are awesome, but for some reason, with their biggest knives, they include this mediocre, massively oversized, totally unfitted nylon monstrosity

and they don't even OFFER a kydex solution with BECKER printed on the side as would be proper, so that i can proudly display my superior cutlery while hunting/camping

Bk2 comes with a decent sheath... doesn't seem disproportional in cost to the BK7 and BK9

You could use PRECISELY the same design, but slightly modified for size

and i think that i'd have been willing to pay a bit more for a sheath that i wouldn't have to replace

Because the price would be higher and some would rather have lower cost and utility value over kydex or leather. The new shorts have nice sheaths though. Maybe the winds of change are coming. But Becker is about getting you a great knife at the best possible price.

Becker dont make kydex. The 11/14 sheath and 2 sheath are PLASTIC of some sort. certainly NOT kydex.

BK&Ts can come with kydex and micarta...if you wanted to pay 150-175 or more for them. I prefer their system, can buy the QUALITY blade, then add the fancy sheath and grips as money allows...but they are more then useable in their current production pattern. Its an economical boon for people on a limited budget who need a quality knife. I dunno bout you, but my budget is way happier when I spread out the purchases.

Glass filled nylon. Which is why it will dull the blade.

well, let me alter this by saying, if the business model is get in cheap (with high quality) and add as you go, i would have been VERY appreciative at having gotten JUST the knife and saving say $15 then dumping my own $30-40 into a quality sheath

it would make more sense for them to sell them separately as i'm willing to bet MANY of you have a box somewhere with a bunch of becker factory nylon that will never again see the light of day, as you dressed your beckers in custom polymer

because if they came with good sheaths I would be out of the job.

probably, but not for a while. I'm moving and out of the business for a month or 2 check with sky storm

in reality, you would maybe save 5$ and then all the po' folks would be FORCED to buy a 40$ sheath instead of using what is in fact a very USEABLE factory sheath. it aint cool, it aint perfect, but it still WORKS. Better then MANY MANY factory sheaths I have seen. The last Buck (USA knife, China sheath) I bought had such a pisspoor sheath it wasnt even useable and literally frayed half apart first time I did use it.

generally, 99% of the people who get a production knife hates the stock sheath, regardless if it's pancake, or standard military style with a pouch, or whatever :D you can't please anybody. give them one thing, and a mighty hew and cry from other people want something else. you can't win, so they make choices.

while some of you know, most don't, that KaBar has been evolving not only the knives, but the sheaths over time. they've even toned down the use of glass filled nylon, which while easy to make, and very strong, has dulled knives. so fine, ya'll get nylon without glass. in other sheaths, you get nice military ones that would cost much more to do better with. want custom? you have that option.

logistically, it would be a nightmare of KaBar to offer multiple sheath options. they'd have to create basically an entirely new product for each sheath design...

no what? almost no production company does that. KaBar isn't about to.

now, if they sold an aftermarket sheath like you wanted, who knows.

but they seem committed to selling all knives with a basic, functional sheath, at least for shipping :)

some of the new sheaths (tweeners) are as good or better than you can get from spec-ops. know what? people ALREADY hate them, without ever having handled one yet. how's that for the power of suggestion?

sheaths: you can't win even thoug they try...

I like my 9 sheath better than my my 2 sheath to be honest. I don't really have a gripe with my 9 sheath. It works well for how I use it. The sheath I HATE was the one for my 14. That will be the first one I upgrade.

Cold steel offers quality plastic sheaths on 25 dollar knives. Just saying it can be done.

and for the most part, so does KaBar. on models they designated to receive plastic sheaths.

those pouch sheaths? cost more i should imagine.

nobody like the factory sheath :)

Spec-Ops $50 retail, less wholesale, minus the cost of the stocker your looking a $25.00 - $30.00.

Seems doable.

Just a thought,

First thing I do is go to Custom Leather Sheath and Custom Handles for every BK that I buy and believe it or not it all adds up to a tidy some when you sit down and figure what you now have in what started out to be a good cheap knife.!* Take a BK2 just for the heck of it.! $65 + $45 + $45 = $155.00 Total more or less in a $65 plus Tax -- Knife.! Sometimes it makes you just stop and think ! Brains ~~~ what are they really for.?????
Nah - - - - I quit thinking a long time ago because people are just like Knives - - - you will never quite figure them out.* Then again who more or less really wants to try to.*

The way i see it is that becker decided to make a knife with cost and function in mind so everything that increases. Cost without increasing funcition is not relevant. To make a decent sheath ort at least a good enough one so that the buyer does not end up changing for a betterone would make the knife too expensive. Hence the sheath and handle....but they where intelligent enough to allow this so that people would customize their knifes depending on taste...or how deep the pocket is.

Cheers for that
