Why cut corners on the sheath?

Every person has different wants & needs in a sheath. I think it is brilliant myself---skimp on the sheath, IF you have to skimp at all. That insures a better knife everytime. Sheaths are so personal & you can even have 3 or more setups for the same knife. Belt carry, inside the waistband carry, chest carry, inverted carry, dropleg carry, weakhand side carry, pack carry, baldric rig carry, bushcraft carry, self-defense carry, etc...

a good sheat can cost 2x or more what the knife cost. Price point is important.

I like my 9 sheath better than my my 2 sheath to be honest. I don't really have a gripe with my 9 sheath. It works well for how I use it. The sheath I HATE was the one for my 14. That will be the first one I upgrade.

Same here, I'd thrown away my 14's sheath and made one with kydex, not a beauty but works fine.

I dont love the 9's sheath, but it works and I do like that it holds an altoids tin and a remora. While I wouldnt mind getting a different one it isnt even on my list to replace at this point.

Besides, they're functional, and tough. They're still better sheaths than you'd get on most cheap knives, and kydex they're not. Many people who realize that they're actually glass-filled nylon don't like the sheath on the 2 and the others, since they dull the edge on the knives very quickly. Might help to do some research before you complain...

As for me, I'm just thankful that Ka-bar passed the savings on to me so that I can have a nice, functional sheath, but still save plenty of money so I can get my own custom from Skystorm or Al Welke, or Mashed Cat, or any of the other makers around. Or, for the truly budget conscious, learn how to make your own, and you'll save money in the long haul.

I actually like the stock sheath that came with my BK2. After removing the loop and installing a Tek-lock, I have a bomb proof sheath for my BK2. I also never experienced the dulling of the blade with my BK2 like others have.

My BK7 was another story. Loved the knife; hated the sheath. I liked the concept of the sheath, just didnt like its contruction and all around sloppyness of the thing. I picked up a SpecOps sheath a few days later for a pretty good price and am really happy with it. I do prefer leather, but will pull that particular trigger once I order a BK5.

I just picked up a BK9 with micarta scales. I plan to strip and modify the knife but I also knew that the sheath was a throw away. The knife is really what I was after since the design, blade steel, and balance is great. Next up is a sheath to match the knife. I am glad that I get to throw away the stock sheath since it made the knife inexpensive and I get to pick what I want from the custom side.

Now the hunt starts for the sheath that I want!! That is what makes this all so much fun!

Marketing and Economics guys. There is a definite price elasticity with regard to knife demand. What that means is you need to determine the point at which you can sell the most knives for the highest price. I bet for the BK2 it's about $65. Very likely if you change the scales and sheath, you reach a point where the price decreases demand for knives more than the increase in profit.

If you want a nice knife for about $150 that includes micarta and kydex, ESEE makes them everyday. One of the reasons I bought a BKT instead of an ESEE was that difference in price point.

because if they came with good sheaths I would be out of the job.

bwahhhahahhahaaa but yeah I do wish they came with nothing or something I'd really use.

Not too long ago I bought a "survival knife" of amazon, I think I paid $11 (planning to leave abandon it anyway) and it came with a comparable sheath to the new tweeners(in all fairness the tweener sheaths are a bit better). So I suppose at cost we could save ~2-5 $ on a becker if they came in "tactical" cardboard, but I'm not too hurt either way. What I got will suffice if I've just got to strap it on now, and since I much prefer good kydex I'm not too far away from the real thing

Cause it's fun to watch the noobs come in and b*tch about stuff instead of doing what is intended when getting the knife and make it your own through stripping, patinaing, bending kydex/sewing leather, fabricating handles.

Don't antagonize, please. Not necessary.

Was kinda surprised to see this thread bounce back up, but I tend to agree, they are what they are.

At least you get something.

I like the sheaths. I think they're just fine, especially given the price. I'm kinda surprised by how much in the minority I am. But then, I like a good, functional piece of equipment, and they're a darn sight better than most cheapo nylon sheaths. Not that I don't prefer kydex or leather. But it's nice to have a reasonably okay sheath that is nice and inexpensive, and then I can choose whichever style I want, or make my own. I do that most of the time anyways. A nice sheath is a bonus, but I'd rather save the monies.

No one sheath is going to please everyone. You like leather, I like kydex. You like kydex, I want nylon. You want nylon, I'd rather have GFN or whatever the BK2 sheath is. You want GFN or whatever, I want leather. And on and on and on.

Of the Becker knives I currently own, all have started in the stock sheath (except the BK13 my son didn't want) but they aren't currently all there...
BK13 - no sheath - sitting in easy reach, rarely gets used.
BK11 - currently in KSF pocket sheath, I'd like a leather neck sheath for it as well.
BK14 - currently in stock sheath. It's fine there for now but kydex would be better for me.
BK2 - currently in stock sheath but I'm looking *closely* at some of Skystorm's stuff.
BK9 - currently in kydex - it's doing just fine right there though it also did just fine in the stock sheath for many hours of hard use.

Given that we all have our own tastes and ideas about how best to carry our sharps, I'd just as soon get an effective though inexpensive sheath with all my knives - exactly what Kabar / Becker provides. That way I can use my knife right away and upgrade as I have time / funds / inclination.

The nice thing about Beckers is how customizable they are. I recently picked up a BK2 and BK9. Hated the handles so I got some new handles. Hated the factory sheaths, so I contracted to have some sheaths made from skystorm. It's all about making it your own, right? I prefer it this way.

The whole sheath/price dilemma will never be settled.
It's the Ford/Chevy debate of the knife world.
Well, maybe it's like the Strider/Sebenza debate of the folder world.
No. Hang on. Maybe it's more like a butter/margarine debate in the biscuit world.

What were we talking about?

Speaking of which, who was that guy at the end? The one with the two armless (and presumably jawless) pet zombies and the sword? Off topic, but interesting.

Oh shit, total derail, but I gotta.

HER name is Michonne, a major character from here on out. The armless, jawless walkers with her, were her boyfriend, and his best friend. She keeps them to ward off other walkers.

Sheaths are shitty.

That is all.

Awesome, thanks for the info...

Also, who needs a sheath...just use the knife all the time and you're good.

Ehh, sheaths are sheaths, IMO, some good, some not so good. I've gotten $20 knives with $50 sheaths, and some $200 knives with $10 sheaths. I also make my own, out of kydex and leather.

But, there are some out there, that I just love, like my Spartan sheath, I don't know why, but I really love that thing. Not much to it, not very elaborate, but, simple is what I like. Hence my fascination with old 1911's.
