Why delete the sold price in the exchange?

I am guessing it has a lot to do with wifes... ;)

BTW: That is my answer to every question.

I've been asked once, also. Fortunately it was before any money changed hands so it was easy to state that I wasn't going to remove the price, and the person bought it anyways.

The discussion has positive and negative points on both sides.

It's just a choice.

When I first began thinning/refining my collection, it was de rigueur to remove the price after sale.

Old school Hogs removed the selling prices so I mimicked their practice in my sales.

Hmmm - maybe I'll delete the price if it sells for a lot of money, and keep the price if it sells for below "typical" market prices.

If enough people join me in this practice, we can slowly drive down the second-hand prices, and have more sweet old school blades available to purchase and actually use, instead of putting them in a safe. Who's with me????

LOL.

If there is no price listed after the sale a second person cannot buy it by accident once its sold.

It is policy on another forum I frequent to leave the prices up and mark the item as sold - I've had well over 100 sales on that forum and I have never had one instance where there was a miscommunication, nor can I recall ever seeing a problem with this policy - except when the seller forgot to mark the item sold.

Its actually one less step for the seller when editing the sales thread - instead of deleting the price and replacing with "sold," the seller just adds sold next to the price :D

Agreed. I gray out the sold items and mark it sold like this...

4. SAR5. Blk/Orange G10. Mint. $275 SOLD

5. MiliGanza Meaner Street. Sage coating, black canvas micarta. Mint. $285. $275 $270 $260 SOLD

6. MiliGanza Active Duty. Sage coating, black canvas micarta. Mint. $225. $220 SOLD

I've only been hanging out on BF for a little under a year, but I've typically deleted the price in my sale threads (not just Busse) because that seemed to be what I saw happen most. I was just following suit.

Having put up many sale threads myself since, the reason I usually delete the price is what STR said...I've had at least a few PMs or emails asking if such and such is still available, even when I had "sold" next to the price. I just decided it would be easiest to make it crystal clear in big letters that the item is SOLD. I'm sure the majority can catch on most of the time, but there are threads out there where I haven't been able to tell if an item was sold yet or not. This might be a bit cynical, but I've just tried to make it as foolproof as possible for myself and buyers.

As helpful as it may be to include price, I'm of the thought that it's no one's business but the buyer's and seller's what the buyer was willing to pay. (Don't mean to sound callous as that came out, it's just my opinion). From time to time the buyer will haggle down a bit via email, so the price in the sale thread isn't necessarily accurate anyway.

I wage a one-man price-leaving war as best I can. There is no reason to delete them. I've started at least 2 of the "why get rid of your prices" threads here. LOL

To me its far easier to just back space over the price, write Sold and be done with it than it is to turn the entire thing grey but whatever. The original question was why remove the price? I think the reason I gave is one of the reasons its done nothing more. As to whether it makes sense or not well, thats another matter.

I sold a knife to a guy on here who requested me to delete the prices in all the threads.

I'm guessing he was going to re sell it for much higher than he paid for it from me.

yep, let's all be honest about it: hiding the purchase price is (almost always) to better facilitate selling it for a profit later...

it's great to see so many who are in favor of leaving it up for all to see (and generally do), it's a pretty sketchy practice to not, IMO.

thanks Doby and Dennis and Resin and the others who support leaving it there, I know it affects who I choose to do business with...

;)

For a while there, someone (maybe skunk) was leading an effort to quote the initial ad so as to capture the asking prices. It wasn't perfect because he couldn't always catch the adjustments that took place, but it was a decent attempt to prevent the practice.

I prefer to leave the prices up. Only one buyer ever asked me to remove the price, and I complied with his request, mainly because I didn't give it much thought. In retrospect, I wish I had not done so. I won't do so again.
