I was surfing the web and came across of website www.espydercoknives.com. They at the time were advertising 30%-70% off MSRP. Wow! that could be a deal. I searched and searched the site but could not find anything near the advertised price. So I used their contact feature and ask the following:

"Hi, You advertise you offer knives at 70% off. When browsing through your
website I cannot find any. Please point out the knives I can buy at 70% off
with free shipping. Thanks! Bill"

This was their first response:
"I do not have an exact spreadsheet to break this down without going
through every item on the site. Most of our models are 30-60% off, we had a
few specials at Father's day which brought savings to 70% but I am having
our tech department adjust the banner to read 30-60% off as I can not find
the 65-70% items listed, they may be turned off if we are out of stock. Most
of our items that are over $75.00 sales price are in the 45-60% off MSRP
range. Please use the discount code "XXXXXXX" (Sorry Do not feel I should Supply) in the discount bar at checkout for an additional 10% savings on any model on our website. We appreciate your business very much!!!

Wow this is their customer support and they cannot tell a potential customer what their pricing is in respect to their advertising?

They then came back with another email:
This was in the subject line only "Sku # C36GPCMOBK Spyderco Military Camo $154.97 sales price 239.95 msrp 65% savings". Nothing in the body.

If you do the math this is nowhere near 65% off.

So I emailed back the following:
"Not certain what school you attended but that is not 65% off MSRP. 50% is $119.95 and 65% is $83.98. This borders on false advertising or just plain made up math. You can pickup a calculator at Wal-Mart for under $10 dollars with a percent key. Type in $239.95 then minus key then 65 then percent key and you get $83.98.

Regards,
Not a new customer. "

Okay this is where is gets really good with their response:
"Sorry, I use a HP 12c and did some quick math then to reply to your original e-mail and just now to check its accuracy and I guess my batteries are low as it's not adding correctly, my apologies. No one is trying to deceive you or false advertise here. We have changed the site to read up to 60% as we have some of our higher priced items that offer larger savings out of stock right now. We do have some of the lowest prices on the internet and we obviously can pass a larger savings along to the customer on a larger ticket item. I stand corrected and will be buying new batteries tonight for my HP. Please let us know if we can help you with a knife. Have a great day.

WTF - I am suppose to believe that someone is business cannot look at their pricing and have a clue on percentages off the top of their head. Then use the excuse about low batteries. Give me a break. This is just flat out false advertising and they got caught. One excuse after another. They have now removed their 70% off banner from their website. Later in the day (8 hours) they came back with three Byrd knives with discounts close to 60%. Took them all day to do that. I wouldn't put these guys in the same category as The Blade Shop, but their business ethics is in question in my mind. This is the same bunch with www.KershawKnivesDirect.com, www.GerberKnivesDirect.com, and www.Buck-Knife-Direct.com. All claim huge savings. I also have a problem when a business cannot use their name besides "customer support" in their correspondence. What are they trying to hide? :jerkit:

Who knows maybe they went back to actually now offer knives priced as advertised. I know I won't be back or ever consider buying from any of their stores. :thumbdn: Too many good stores out there to deal with this bunch.

I didn't know ethics ran on batteries....

One letter off and you are bashing this poor guy.....shame on you! ;)

65% of MSRP
is nearly the same as
65% off MSRP

Well, his site does state 30-60% off. Based off how he wrote his pricing, he's meaning/showing 60% of, not off, so he is falsely advertising, unless he does actually have at least 1 knife/item that's 60% off msrp.

I didn't spend enough time looking through his site to check that out, though. I do agree that there are plenty of good to excellent Internet dealers to not bother with this one.

Batteries low is a sorry excuse, though.

Geesh, if you don't like his prices, move on. Everyone has to make a profit on average or they can't stay in business. I don't know this particular dealer, but what do you want him to do? Perhaps he sold some closeouts at 70% off in the past, which would justify his banner. Again, I dunno, but arguing with a guy over his pricing seems like a poor use of your resources IMO.

It's unfortunate but there seems to be more dishonest sites/people than there are honest people out there. Business is business and we advertise and market our websites to do what we can to get the customers but what's even more important is to keep those customers.

Honesty, great customer service and wide selection at decent prices and everyone will be happy. Well at least your smarter than most and didn't fall for anything dishonest.

There are some good honest dealers here on BF that would treat you the way that you should be treated and I'm sure wouldn't pull any bait and switch tactics for your business.

Stay safe!
