Why do Knife makers sell their knives for more than 3rd party distributers?

Every manufactured item, is cheaper when purchased in quantity. A company sets the MSRP as a guideline. Sells bulk items to distributors, who then decide what profit margin they can live with. The knife company isn't going to undercut the incentive for the dealers to handle their brand. I suppose they'd rather see the knives go out the door in mass, than to have them trickle out one at a time.

I would not want your trashy knives. Kershaw likely makes a much better knife than you....

HAHAH

Hahaha. Better? I make a couple knives, I wouldn't whore them out on your life. You wouldn't want my trashy.. dude I am still trying to sell my stuff. You know what I won't do? Sell out. Ever. Do me a favor, make a point of never patronzing anything from me, ever. Enjoy your Kershaws. Reporting myself, tired of you.

Yup. It's all about distribution models. The knife company would rather deal with a smaller number of larger accounts who then handle further distribution on their behalf rather than having to deal with a massive volume of individual retail sales. Some people are willing to buy at full MSRP direct from the manufacturer anyhow, though, so they give the option regardless because at the margin they can make as a manufacturer doing direct sale at full MSRP it's worth their time.

I opened this thread and wish I didn't. Realg7, best not to poke folks around here being so new. Perhaps dig through the forums and you will discover so much good information. As far as pricing goes, makers price is makers price. If you feel comfortable enough spending your cash at another site, do it. I personally would have no issue buying a Kershaw (if I was into production knives) from where you mentioned.
