Why do knife snobs hate SOG???

I seriously read the first three posts and decided to toss in my two cents so please understand that, if my response seems "out of phase" in some way.

I think SOG makes a quality fixed blade but I've had some QC issues with their folders. I do like some of their designs. I especially like the grinds and thickness/size of the full-size Trident folder's blade, but the handle and lock feel weak to me.

As for their fixed blades, I'm not crazy about the designs, but the quality and materials are solid. I imagine they are made in much the same way as Fallkniven and other companies that outsource to Japan are, even like some of Spyerco's stuff.

Anyway, like I said, my two cents, worth exactly what you paid.

Years ago I was really fortunate to pick up a much-older versioned SOG: the blackened Recon Government. It is Seki City Japan-made; and it is a wonderful knife. Whatever else may be said about SOG, this particular piece is truly outstanding.

I'm not a SOG hater by any means, but comparing SOG to ZT or Benchmade is like comparing a Ford Mustang to a Porsche 911. You may like the looks of the Mustang better, but the Porsche costs more because it is constructed of superior materials, and of a superior design.

No hate.? Alas, then (like me) you too are disqualified from being a Knife Snob.

Perhaps Knife Snobs are a threatened species.

SOG just does not appeal to me aesthetically, but there are a few I like such as the Aegis. Most of the designs just do not appeal to me. They do a decent job on their AUS-8 steel, but it is still not my favorite steel. So mainly from what I experienced I do not like their looks, overall feel, many of the materials they use I do not prefer, and I do not find their actions to be that good. So most of those are personally opinions, but I do not really look at too many SOGs (Besides the Aegis) with all the other great options out there and the fact that I am always upgrading my collection into higher quality knives. Really looking forward to the Brous Blades Bionic for $160, it is like having that or buying to Aegis's. The Bionic is more limited, higher quality, and gives off that cool factor especially when you think about the quality.

I've had a few they cut fine but they also all had coated blades for whatever reason. After a bit of use the coating would wear away and the knife would start looking crappy and cheap. That's my biggest gripe.

I do not hate them but I certainly dislike my trident folder. Luckily I didnt pay over $20 for it though. Now if you can find me a one of these for the early 2000 price they sold for let me know as Im good for it

I would start liking them again if more of their products had the word "Japan".

The Mini Tsunami is my favorite fixed blade of all time.

The title of this thread is ignorant and turned me off immediately. Get a lot more constructive replies if you word your questions and comments a little more tactfully.

I can't really say that I hate SOG. Dislike is probably more accurate. They have some ethical failures that keep me from liking them, as well as some of their products being of relatively poor quality and being overpriced.

That being said, I really want a Tomcat, a Pentagon Elite, and an Agency.

I love my sog folders with VG-10 steel. Very well made and came super sharp. The Vision series is great, and I've always wanted to try out an Arcitech, looks like a mid-tech. The Flash series is not that great, made with Aus-8 steel and cheaper all around feel to the knife series. The arc lock is also a bonus !

WISH THEY WERE MADE IN "USA"
I actually like some of there designs but wish they moved all production to the USA, they only make some of the folders here. Its not that big of deal but I would be a faithful customer to them if done so.

Truthfully im planning on purchasing a Seal Pup Elite to beat the hell out of and take to the beach and Saltwater fishing with. Im a fan of there attention to corrosion.

Lol, apparently I made this thread a long, long time ago.

I did love my Mini Vulcan but I ended up selling it and I don't think I'd ever buy a SOG again. To each their own though.

They almost all look like knives for 12 year olds or something. Not to mention they billboard their stuff more then ZT, which is hard to believe.

I shudder when I think about the SOG Revolver knife I bought before I knew better. I can't think of a more useless chunk of scrap metal.

Gunny approved is what they advertise. I guess good old gunny sold his soul to the chinese.

I dont think calling people snobs for not like SOG is fair....everyone has different tastes and likes. I know Ill never own a SOG knife but do have a throwing axe family got mr for Chrstmas. I just dont like their style of knives, that doesnt mean others dont

OUCH! I bet he'd rip you a new one, given the chance, LOL. Seriously, you raise a neat point. I don't think it needed too much research before he chose to endorse G-locks..... But, I bet he's got this vision of SOG mainly as a the producer of some good, solid fixed-blades. If he carries a pocketknife as we know it, I'd bet it's a Buck, or similar trade, along with maybe a SAK.
