Why do people stare at someone wearing a multitool or a knife??

So what do we as responsible knife owners do about it? Do we flaunt the fact that we're carrying knives in the public's face by wearing them? Frankly I don't see that as a solution.

I carry a knife all the time, and have for the past 37 years, the difference is I don't draw attention to myself, advertise I carry one, I pay attention to who is around me before pulling it out and using it (At Work) and when asked about it I just say I use my knife at work.

I don't dress like I am some kind of operator, gangster or some other fantasy whatever and my mindset isn't that the knife I have on me is a weapon.

I don't pull my knife out at restaurants and I act responsibility when I do use it and or show it to people as in I don't advertise it as a weapon.......

All that macho tactical crap doesn't help us at all. ;)

Exactly. And whenever I wear a knife, I'm advertising it. However people choose to interpret that isn't up to me, it's up to them. And odds are, they aren't going to interpret it the same way you and I do. So I keep coming back to the same question. Why advertise it if I don't need to?

I carry mine clipped in my pocket, not usually an issue from my experiences, but then I don't draw attention to myself either or the knife.

I appreciate that. But what I've had to deal with tells me otherwise. And when it comes to carrying my knives, I'm about as low profile as it gets. :)

I'd say that all depends on where in CA you're situated. This is a pretty big State with a diverse demographic.

I would agree with that, same with a lot of states, different types of people..

We have some real pansies here in NC also in certain areas.

I'm glad you guys touched on this. Your entire home state is usually not the best predictor of knife-related attitudes, particularly if that state possesses a tremendous variety of regional differences; (for example, the level and type of urbanization in a given area).

Sounds like the OP is clearly bit sensitive about being "stared at".

Poor guy, he needs a hug.

If someone wants to stare, they can stare. I've yet to see anyone stare at me so I am good.

Group hug!

I live in LaLa Land. You know, the home of all those actors you were referring to earlier. ;)

Ah. I was wondering what state you were in. I'm a little surprised to find its CA, but I'm really only familiar with the lower third. People in SoCal are very comfortable with knives for the most part and I've never had so much as an odd glance or negative remark. I clip my knife to my pocket but absolutely no one notices and many folks around these parts carry regularly. No advertising here either; just responsible use and carry.

Yet another reason I'm glad I live in Idaho. No one looks at anyone twice here for wearing a knife.
