I'm talking quality not price. Why do people use the knives that clearly wobble when "locked". mystery blade steel, dull as a rock. get what i'm saying? Why do they choose the knife. My friend is like this. He has very few even halfway decent knives. I could tell he liked my benchmade( he cares way to much about looks. he said spyderco was ugly:thumbdn:) I assume they never had a good folder and couldn't see a difference between a good blade and a piece of junk. Why do you think people use blade that are simple horrible?

.. because they do not know better and most people feel its insanity to pay $30-$300 for knife.

I had a friend just like this, he said spyderco was ugly and he was all about looks and not quality, now hes rockin' an emerson a-100, my work is done:D

For the same reasons some folks drive economy cars and some drive a Lexus.

Some do it cause that's what they can afford, others because they are happy and can get by with cheaper stuff.

they are uninformed or just dont care, thats why theres a bigger market for the cheap knives. As you said good dependable knives can be had for cheap.
It's up to us knife nuts to inform the flock:D (in a respectful manner, nobody likes a know-it-all!)
cheers

Lol he actually got me into knives. Now he's a bit upset I know more about them than him. Every time i'm going to buy a knife he screams at me. IT'S UGLY!(mainly syderco)

well us bladeforums folks like cool gear (knives, guns, outdoor gear/packs, tools) basically stuff that is military and combat related because it is a hobby for us. Not everybody is into this stuff and collects other stuff, plush horsies/ponies for example, sometimes even a unicorn.

in all seriousness though, it does come down to having the money to buy quality things, and having the interest.

Some people just aren't knife people so they really don't care.

Others are just frugal (Insert Stupid).

And still others just don't know any better.

why? because they're CHEAP...

i use a folder i got with LED light for very simple cutting tasks around the house/yard...they are great for scraping, stirring paint, and cutting snausages for the dog's treatball and whatever crappy task i need an edge for...

I also think it is just about being uninformed for some people. I am amazed at work when I see guys carrying $15 S&W knives. They see the name, and think that the knife must be quality because of it. But just like cameras, cars, guitars, guns or anything else, someone who isn't 'into it' isn't going to realize what is out there, and what all the variables actually mean.

I hear the old "I always lose it" excuse.

This way not only do they not have to invest the money in a tool, they don't even have to give it enough attention in maintenance to even keep it in their possession.

I understand some people can't afford more expensive knives, but this one guy I know just keeps buying dozens of cheap $2 internet knives. I guess he's convinced that more is better.

I know people like this.. they just buy cheap power tools that constantly break/have to be replaced instead of buying 1 good tool with all accessories that has a lifetime warranty and will last forever.

One man's ceiling is another man's floor.

An analogy:

Why do watch guys buy a Bulgari, Patek Phillipe, IWC, etc., when a Casio keeps better time and requires no maintenance? The don't like plastic bands, plastic faces, plastic buttons, and plastic crystals. They can afford the expenditure and the maintenance, and like the fact that not everyone has the same watch they do. Those watches are masterpieces of technology that can and are handed down through the generations, kind of like a great knife.

Why do Casio guys buy Casio? They are cheap, functional and work fine. Not a heritage watch (I am sure some here feel their Casio watches are just that, so no offense) but a solid piece of equipment that gets the job done. And if something happens to it during work or play, small loss.

There are a lot of other interests for other people like photography, coin collecting, skiing, and literally millions of others ( including money issues!! ) that take priority over the knife in their pocket.

I don't think its a matter of "they don't understand". Grownups can choose what they want. To me it seems that some folks just like using a blade as scraper, prybar, etc., with some cutting thrown in for good measure. And for them, a "low end" blade is just fine and dandy. Who am I to say that they are wrong?

Pretty much yeah.... ;)

There is an old saying that is so very true......

A Smart person will buy an item once, a stupid (Cheap) person will buy that same item over and over.

New guy at my work is like this. He told me he collects knives, so I thought cool someone with similar tastes. However, every pocket knife he's brought in to work he couldn't even tell me the maker of the knife, let alone blade steel, etc....

I mean, I only have "lower end" Spydies on me at work, but come on... :P

Then again, I'd bring my Opinel to work if I wasn't almost always in gloves. Not a glove friendly knife, that one. And I guess that's a "cheap" knife. However that's the old school kind of cheap, made to just work. New, taiwanese cheap is made to look a certain way, no matter how poorly it might work.

so... what does that make everyone on this forum who buys dozens of expensive, quality knives :D

I carry a SAK which costs 20 bucks, and they don't advertise their steel, and it is just fine for 99% of what I need. I think you have no idea. I prefer to look at it this way - most folks cut with their knife - and carry one which is in their price range and does what they want it to do. People here are an exception - caring about what steel your knife is made of is unique to this subset of people - I think you are being uneccesarily harsh on folks who carry a knife - like you.

Knife nuts like me. :D

What that all ment was when you spend very little on because you don't look at quality before cost and it breaks that make a person a fool because they will have to purchase that same item many times over.

Instead of buying it once because it's good quality and will last. ;)

However high cost doesn't always mean high quality. ;)

A smart person will look for quality then try to get that item for a good price.

A stupid person will look at only price, not quality and buy the cheapest crap and complain about it when it breaks.
