why do the heavy duty bk knives come with such slippery handles?

OMG...... DidI really read this whole effing thread?????...... Proton, I got my first edged tool at seven.....,it was a Plumb hatchet with a smooth, polished handle.....Very comfy..... I have owned hundreds of knives and used a lot of them..... I use a knife of interest until I have learned what that knife has to teach me..... Not always but usually..... Sometimes the lesson is short and with well designed blades and handles that lesson can be decades long.... The Sixteen is the result of a half century long lesson from a Puma Hunters Friend......Smooth handle and all...... The handle and grip contours from the BK-10 are the result of a probably ten year lesson from a Ka-Bar designed and Case made WWII era pilots survival machete that I put hundreds of hours of use on....... I never had a"flying" issue with the original even with slab handles that I sanded as smooth as I could get them..... I have never been accused of being overly fit or strong but, I never had an issue with your theoretical concerns..... My son survived, as did the bystanders to his labors starting about the age of eight using the stock BK handles....... The handles of that era were a might slimmer....... It is my belief, and I use as one of my design criteria long term comfort in use..... Most knife users have really short use times.....A deer gutting and skinning, or building a fire....... Long term use is rare but I think quite important..... I have used knives for extend periods of time in bushcraft classes as well as in the bush..... The classes probably had more blade time than the bush bashing did....... Both taught me about what fits and works..... As to your original comment, I would posit that my handles are SMMOTH, not slippery and they are that way because thy are a hand tool that must accommodate the average human hand .... I USE the blades I design and I have an aversion to tools that might hurt me...... If I thought texturing the scales would result in a better, safer tool they would have textured handles...... Your concerns seem based on theory...... I try to design practical blades.... I suspicion that you are a relatively short distance down the path of bushcraft enlightenment and I wish you well on your journey...... If you get a chance I would welcome a call from you.....423 295 2500..... I love talking blades...

All best....

Ethan

i think posting here would benefit people more than a phone call.

then why is it that 90% of the people change/modify the handles? look at all the reviews on websites and you will see people complaining about how slippery the handles are. does that not tell you anything? i mean if people are changing the handles when they get it then there is something definitely wrong with the handles and people straight out say that they are too slippery. thats what the general consensus is.

Your ignorance is really starting to Piss me off. Don't know where you are getting your so called facts from, but you are wrong. There are thousands of people who use Ethan's knives stock, right out of the box with no problem at all.

Don't come into Ethan's house and start talking back to the man himself. He is one of the nicest and most knowledgable people in the knife industry.

You don't like his knifes and the way they are designed, then buy a different brand. Go get a Schrade or something comparable.

It is obvious from your posts that you have never really used a knife or have any outdoor experience at all. I feel you are disrespecting Ethan and the rest of us here who actually use and enjoy these knives.

You don't like it and don't want to contribute to a decent conversion about knives, and just want to argue with everyone here, then take a fricken Hike!

i did not say i did not like the bk knives. i love my bk-10. that knife is the best! 95% of it is totally awesome. im also planning on getting a bk2.

and i did not know that disagreeing with something people say equates to "talking back"

Thanks for letting us know your intentions. If you were truly curious about something why not take advantage of Ethan's offer to take his time and enlighten you? I for one am tired of reading your crap.

When I see an extensive analysis with actual data, I will believe this notion. Until then, it's just more baseless speculation.

Proton.....

I suspect that 95% of Becker owners do not mod them in any way...... The people who inhabit this forum are blessed knife nuts and many of them are very creative critics...... A lot of these creative people are sure I got it ALMOST right.....LOL..... In that sense they are just like me..... They get a blade, they hold it, use it and then they are thinking, maybe a little more of this, or a little less of that, whatever ...... That is how I got started and the modding thing is fun and teaches you more about what works and more importantly , works for you.....I rarely pic up a blade that Don ot say to myself - hmmmmm if only the maker had done x or y or z I think it would meet my needs better and I expect other knife nuts to do that with my blades.... I enjoy the mods people make to my blades and some of them I learn new stuff which, always makes me happy....

Make a couple of try sticks, feather some sticks, build a shelter and a bow drill and fire board and see how it all fits and works for you...... And remember smooth is not always slippery.....

You have argued with every one here, even people trying to give you good sound advice. You have disagreed with everyone.

There are decades of experience here in the Becker Forum, and you can actually learn a lot if you would just read more and post less.

You've been here a day and have over 100 posts that do not contribute one bit to the good of the knife community.

I really must ask, How old are you? I mean that not in a bad way, I really am curious.

It seems to me you are at least a teenager and you honestly think you know it all. You are basing your arguments off of what you read or saw on the internet and not even coming to your own conclusions from using the knives??

I Just don't get.

it will take me some time to gather the data

Pray tell, how do you propose to get access to all Becker owners so that you can support that 90% claim? :D

I think that'll do for this thread. It was fun while it lasted!
proton, when you've actually used your BK-10 and have some substance (rather than speculation) to post, please feel welcome.
Until then, it might be best to heed my "read more, post less" recommendation.

Ethan

there is a difference between modifying a knife to suit one's tastes and modifying a knife to be more safer.

and smooth means slippery when talking about handling heavy duty tools

Ok, then Proton, if you wish to wallow in your inexperience, ignorance and that terrible need to have that last little word you are most welcome to do so..... I wish you well...

Goodbye...

Ethan
