  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Why do you buy knifes ?

Folders - open boxes at home and work, also pocket jewelry
Fixed - outdoor recreation
Kitchen - earns me salary

It would be pretty weird hanging out here otherwise. Everyone needs a hobby of some kind, this one happens to be filled with a lot of metallurgical science, mechanical engineering, and other technology that many find interesting.

I buy knives because I'm unaware of anywhere that people are giving them away for free. :D

Serious answer, like many others, I grew up in the Boy Scouts going on camping trips, hiking trips, and so on. Even as a kid, I loved exploring the extensive wooded areas near the houses we lived in (military brat). And when you're in the woods, it just feels...wrong somehow to not have a knife with you. As I got older, and had more discretionary income, I've continued to buy more knives. I don't think I'll ever be at a point where I'm not collecting and using knives.

Knives are very interesting, they are highly diversified and have played a significant role throughout human history and pre-history.

I started buying knives when I was in my teens, so for me it's just a normal thing to do.

My wife asks me the same question. So I ask her why she buys shoes. Silence for several seconds and then we both laugh. Neither of us have an answer to our particular question.

I think I'm in a minority here but I only buy one knife at a time to use as EDC/utility. Somewhere between a few months to five years, I'll retire the old knife and get a new one. I've resisted the temptation to start collecting recently by living vicariously through this forum and looking at other peoples knives and collections.

To aggravate my girlfriend, which makes me happy...and I get a knife out of the deal which also makes me happy.

Good subject!

I enjoy knives for a variety of reasons... I am a mechanic & machinist and I need, no REQUIRE quality tools, be it my snap-on ratchet or my Bridgeport mill or my good quality knives. I buy them as investments (wether I ever plan to sell them or not). I buy them cause I need to buy something with my spendin' money, might as well be something I really enjoy as a hobby but at the same time its justifiable as a tool so I can feel better about purchases.

I like quality items. Something that you can really appreciate, as well as the time and effort it took to design. There is something about collecting knives and eventually working up to making your own that's just raw. It's like basic human instinct right before your eyes. We weren't born with natural advantages so we use our intelligence to create tools that give us an advantage. That's how it's always been and their is something beautiful in all of it.
Not to mention sharp and pointy things are just plain cool.

I use knives at work. To date they've all been fixed blades. There are two reasons for this. One is sanitation. The other is usefulness.

I can do 90% of anything I need to with two blades. A 10-inch Chef's knife and a 4or 5-inch sticking knife. That sticking knife is a utility blade that can be used as a parer or boning knife or small slicer.

A common feature of modern folders, particularly tactical ones, is the blade stock is too thick and tends to wedge things open instead of shaving thin slices like paring an apple.

I joined up to learn about Shirogorov knives and possibly others that are configured like them. They look to be the most useful EDC knives for me I have seen. Their prices and availability give me pause.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Another I found that has a flat ground and slim profile is the LionSteel TiSpine. Are there others you guys know?

My dad has always liked knives. When I was little, he started giving me a nice knife every year for Christmas. So, I guess that's where my love for knives started. I do the same with my son, and he loves knives too.

I buy hem mostly for looks. I like to sit in my room and just flip my blades... Too bad I don't get too much use out of 'em
