"Why do you carry a weapon?!"

I've been able to create some sort of "swish" noise by flick a knife, but it wasn't too audible.
People like to make fun of me for carrying. I get the last laugh, though, when I calmly walk over to them trying to tear a package apart and offer to cut it.

Flicking can be very satisfying and you're right, it does produce a nice audible effect.

I do love watching people try to tear open big packages like an ape. Heck, you need to have some kind of implement to open that darn plastic clamshell stuff.

Let's make sure to keep "politics" out of this.

Personally the knife I carry is not a weapon in my mind. It is a tool I use a few times every day. My dad gave me my first pocket knife at 4. Fifty pluss years later I have had to present a weapon two times, but never have presented a knife as a weapon.

My apologies. That my ill-fated attempt at sarcastic humor more than an attempt to be political.

But my statement about people who decide something is a weapon by appearance leading to judgment calls on character stands and I do not intend that in any sort of political sense. That is meant to apply to people at an individual level as that is an active [ignorant] choice each person can make. If people decide a general usage tool implies intent or negative character traits by default, it is very unlikely anything one can say will change that sort of outlook.

20 years in the Marines and I met only 1 Brother who was involved in a combat knife fight. He had 20+ earthworm looking scars on his stomach, chest and sides. He beat the aggressor to death with his shovel. He said the guy never stabbed, only slashed. Lucky maybe. May have not fared so well if he had a knife also? He lost 30lbs recovering from injuries. Horrific way to fight for sure.

Does not require an answer because it isn't really a question. It's a statement disguised as a question. What it really means is, "I am uncomfortable with that thing you have and I need to share my disapproval with you." Understood this way, the only thing left is to smile and nod.

I think this is the best response.
