"Why do you carry a weapon?!"

A screwdriver or a baseball bat can be a weapon. Many things can be weapons.

lol! ^
I once watched a judo master do some very impressive things with a cane. One would swear that the cane became a weapon.

Sharp objects cut both ways.... weapon, tool, or both. I carry a bladed "weapon" to cut stuff every single day. That reminds me, my SAK needs some sharpening.

Does this clown carry a pencil? Does he wear shoes? If so he has weapons. Why does he have them?? Many people have been killed by such things.

:D

For self-defense.

Sadly enough our children are being taught to fear any type of cutting instument.
For example...
I worked for our school district in the technology department and one day needed to replace a part on a
smartboard. I went to the room and set my parts box down and proceeded to open it with a small utility knife
when suddenly a kid starts yelling "DEADLY WEAPON, DEADLY WEAPON".
Talk about "freak-me-the-freak-out" !!!

I started teaching my son how to properly use a knife at a young age. He's almost 13 and finally cut his finger for
the first time. Kind of a proud moment in a father's life.
My daughter is almost 7 and loves to look at my collection. She starts filling one hand up with knives sayin
"I want this one and this one and this one...".
Sad times we live in, my friends.

This is the "DEADLY WEAPON" I had that scary day....

It is really disturbing when something like that happens. My wife just called me a hoarder and I have to admit that comment "stung" even if it is slightly true.

Usually I say, 'To cut things.'

Sometimes, 'For stupid people. Anymore questions, genius?'
Conversation ends and the 'weapon' is never brought up again.

The student shouting "deadly weapon" about a utility knife was probably trying to get attention and to disrupt the school environment because people are conditioned to make loud noise about anything. I hope your school administrators have the integrity to back up your use of a tool when doing your job.

I carry a knife in much the same way I wear clothes. It's just part of not being naked. 99.9% of the time I use it for mundane, peaceful things like opening mail and eating lunch.

As for specific "weapon-related" instances, my favorite example is this:

I once worked door-to-door for a political campaign (terrible idea, don't do that... the money sucks, and even the people who agree with you are generally not very happy to have you knock on their door.)

Anyhow, on one particular day, I was sincerely threatened and very nearly attacked by a rather large and extremely angry dog. I am convcinced to this day, he would have enjoyed nothing more than eating my leg.

Happily for everyone, the dog was restrained and I was able to get the **** out of his range before anyone got hurt. *whew*

Here's the funny part... when it was over, the guy working with me was astounded to realize that a knife had suddenly appeared in my hand when I felt seriously threatened with bodily harm...

"WTF do you carry a knife for?!?"

Umm... DUH!!

I have other similar stories... but you get the idea.

I do, but I could stand to hear a few more such stories. ;)

They're all about the same, really. Thankfully, I've never been forced to actually use a knife as a weapon, and I sincerely hope I never am.

Because everybody else here does.

Haha, too true!

In my area, most people are so wrapped up in their own stuff (eyes locked on smartphone/earphones firmly clamped over ears) that they never even notice that I'm carrying a knife or even when I have used a knife on something... ;):D

Interestingly, I've met many people in the city that are actually pretty interested in knives guns flashlights & other tools etc. so they're not all bad I guess. ;):)

I will get flamed for this, because people will say they don't have the time or energy, but the few times I have been asked such a question re: guns or blades, I responded "Why do you ask?" A couple of times, I could quickly tell that conversation would be moot at best and said oh, then we disagree, on to the next subject. A couple of times, the person seemed interested in hearing my reasoning. For especially the latter, I think it was better than what one might perceive as a smartass or such response.cwd

A good old walking stick works for me. I was surrounded by barking dogs before and have had strays come at me aggressively outdoors, while metal detecting. Maybe the tones from the headphones bother dogs, dunno.

I have recently added, but have not yet had to use, another response.

"For dog defense."

In the last month, here in central Texas, there have been numerous unprovoked dog attacks by free ranging dogs, some feral, some loose from their yards, 1 or 2 getting away from their owners and attacking someone. Had a dog pull free from it's owner, attack a child and after being kicked off the child, attacked and killed another child. And NO, they weren't all pit bulls. 1 or 2 were, but the rest were non-pit bulls. Some may call me crazy, but if someone is being attacked by a dog, to heck with the spca, I'm gonna go Tarzan on it aXX.
