Why do you EDC?

Funny you mention this...I use my EDC enough to sharpen it every 2 weeks or so.Boxes..plastic...I use it a lot.

Benchmade 530

I almost always have a knife on me when I leave the house. I have been packing knives since grade school. I carry one knife that I use for work and another for SD purposes.

I carry daily because I would be lost without a knife. That's what separates us from the animals, knowledge and tools!!! On a serious note I'm a demolition contractor and constantly am cutting stuff. I used to carry a folding razor knife but didn't get the joy using it like I do with my knives, so I leave the razor knife in the truck for the really nasty abusive work and all the cutting chores like rope, zip ties, fire blanket, boxes, poly sheeting, nylon straps, and of course lunch. I keep a spyderco 2 sided pocket stone in my truck to keep my knives cutting. My normal edc is a 3-3.5" folder, my pingo in shirt pocket, and I keep a leatherman charge handy.

As for self defense, I carry a gun for that unless I'm in a place that won't allow concealed carry then I resort to a knife since it's better than nothing ;)

I'm in education as a assistant principal. I have a multi tool in my bag. I leave my edc in my truck when at work. But before and after work it it is in my pocket. I have carried a knife since 8th grade. I don't use a knife everyday but I carry it. In my family, it's a rite of passage for a male. Every man has one.

Now, I'm the only one who has taken it this far. They think spending the $ I spent on an edge pro is a bit much. But hey, I've also fixed all their chipped blades. So they can't complain.

To each their own. I've never carried a money clip nor owned a motorcycle. It is what it is.

Somehow today I left the house this morning without a folder in my pocket. Many times throughout the day I thought "crap, where's my knife?" Turns out the only time I actually needed one was to open my mail when I has to resort to  scissors

Things were simple when I was a young boy. Knives were tools, not weapons. People did not jump to the absurd idea that if you carried a knife, it was with the sole purpose to harm another person. Men carried pocket knives as a normal every day thing. No one gave it any thought. Spotting a guy cut up an orange or peel an apple at lunch time with a knife that he pulled out of his pocket was not uncommon.

I guess that I am saying, "Dad carried a knife, so I carry a knife."

Because:
1. I am retired now so can carry all the time at home, in my garden and workshop etc.
2. modern packaging is a real pain to open - a pocket knife is quick and efficient
3. I like using a knife - it is quick and easy
4. I use a lot of pencils, of all shapes and sizes - for writing, marking wood, drawing designs for woodworking etc, and a sharp knife is the fastest and best way to sharpen a pencil

I carry knives for a few different reasons, but it's all about choice, not necessity. I don't live in handgun territory, so my favorite EDC's are flippers with 4-inch blades that deploy quickly, reliably, and lock up nicely. Since self-defence and emergencies of any kind are priority one, I carry a secondary knife throughout most of the year, and it's the more typical EDC, used for whatever moderate cutting tasks come up; it's shorter and a bit less intimidating, in case I have to use it around people who might get unnerved by the profile of a Shirogorov, or confuse the speed with which it snaps open for a 'switchblade'. One of two Model F95's fill the first role, and I alternate between a Spyderco Slysz Bowie and a Seb 25 for the second. I'm sure things will have changed up a bit a month from now.

I honestly don't even know why I carry a knife, mostly for the noise that notebook paper makes overtime I cut it. (and for the fact that I strop it every 2 hours) But seriously, knives are tools, but I always have a sense of security when carrying through a sketchy situation. Oh, and for cutting and eating apples (like a badass).

I carry for convenience. Also out of habit, since I've carried a folding pocket knife of some type for about 60 years.

I'm currently retired. The last 20 or so years of my working life was in an office environment. One would think a knife wouldn't see much use in those surroundings but one would be wrong. I used a knife almost every day because it was always handy. Need to open an envelope? No reason to look for a letter opener since the pocket knife is always there. Need to pull some staples to make copies? I may not be able to find the staple puller but I have a knife in my pocket that can do the same job. Somebody taped up a package with what seems like a whole roll of packing tape and the only way to open it is with something sharp. Pull out the pocket knife. Seems like there was always an odd job coming up that a handy pocket knife could handle. And seems like there was always someone asking if anyone in the office had a knife they could borrow.

I carry a knife every day because I use my knife every day. This is not an exaggeration. I often have a knife in my pajamas pocket when I am lounging around the house or pecking on my computer. It is part of me and I miss it a lot if I discover I have left the house without my edc knife. Self defense is not even a serious thought and more of a fantasy.

lets see.....

im a butcher, so i have a bag of razor sharp knives in my back seat of my car. i carry currently a spyderco paramilitary 2.

at work in my smock i carry two box cutters - one in each pocket in case one of my hands is busy or if i want to open a box really fast. if i dont have my box cutters on me (break or if im hot) the spyderco comes out to do anything i need at work be it opening boxes or cryovacs, cutting cardboard for stationary (writing lists), popping plastic cable ties off of boxes is really satisfying with a knife thats sharper than everyone else you work with.

when im off work i serve as a protector to my significant other, so i feel empowered when i carry one on me if need be. i also get a lot of crap from amazon i dont need, so a knife to open things makes life easier :)

My EDC knife is needed and used every single day at work because I work in Landscaping/Tree Cutting and Home Renovation.....There is no shortage of different tasks my knife is called upon to be used for. The knife I carry the most at work is the CS Large Voyager Clip Point.

Because, I was at a wedding and I decided not to carry a knife. My wife who was a bridesmade stuck out her hand when she needed to cut a piece of ribbon, knowing that I had a knife. I was mortified because out of respect (or wardrobe) I did not have one. As much as women don't understand they DO appreciate the fact that you have one. It also gave me an excuse to get a Henry Williams for formal occasions;)

After all men are provider and protectors, I think it is in our DNA to have a tool.
