If i'm out 'chopping' then there generally is a good reason for it. This can range from testing a new knife to building a shelter to making a pile of wood for a fire.
I tend to stick to the rule of cutting nothing thicker than my wrist and I look for trees or deadwood to cut that will at worst not damage the woodland and at best help to encourage growth in the area by thinning out some of the competition. I am no trained woodsman but most of us will have seen a wood that needed a little clearing to help it along.
I have also chopped larger diameter wood to allow me make tools such as a mallet, bowl and paddle.
My thinking is if I trash the woods I use then either i'll run out of woods to use or i'll get told to not come back if i'm caught.
