Why do you like Spyderco's?

Right now the Mule team project is keeping me on the edge of my seat, can't wait for the next one.
Spyderco knives in general feel really good in my hand, most other knives end up feeling like they're missing something.

Sal and crew also do a top notch job of keeping us informed, and that they actually do sprint runs based on input from ELU's, Spyderco really is something special.

There are lots of quality knives out there, but Spyderco seems to address my specific cutlery needs directly. They have the specific niche knives that I want, and they make these knives very well. My first experience with this was their Rescue knives. They are just superior to the others when used in that application. I am sure that the Glesser families involvement in EMS has something to do with that. Direct experience informing a skilled design process has led to some superior products for us Save/Serve folks.

Then, when the Spyderco family does not have the direct experience needed to inform their design process, they seek the input of skilled outside designers- rather than just "winging" it. Their MBC line is evidence of that.

To top everything off, they are just good people. Mr. Glesser is a gentleman, and every interaction with Spyderco folks that I've had has been pleasant and at the very least met my expectations (although it's typically far beyond my expectations).

It's easy to like a company that makes good products and treats its customers well.

Great steel
perfect fit and finish
looks great
you're getting a whole lot more than what you pay for.

Incredible reliability, unique designs, never cheaping out on quality material and the most repectable way of running a company...and whatever they put in their knives to make them addictive!

They are among the greatest knife companies around. I have yet to be dissapointed by a Spyderco. Having ten now I can say with certainty Spyderco is the only the second knife company I haven't had a tad of negative experience. Way to go Spyderco!

Back in the late 80s I first became aware of Spyderco when I saw a
tuffram coated aluminum serrated Police at a flea market in Oklahoma.
We were visiting my wife's parents at the time, and I had never seen one.
It caught my eye immediately and I bought it then and there.
Took it back to California and showed it to all my friends, who
thought it was pretty cool, especially the ease of opening, and the clip.

I like them for their simplicity and ease of opening without having studs
on the blade. I like them for their appearance, though some dis-agree with
me on that point.

But I just plain like knives in general, and have a bunch from many different manufacturers, including a few customs. Basically if a knife catches my eye, I buy it. Like I just bought the Benchmade VLF for its long blade, short handle.

I only have three fixed blades, two of which are Spydies.

Proabaly be buying a carbon fiber Military real soon. Love the Military.

After using various one-handers for years I finally came to the conclusion that I had to have:
1. Hole in the blade rather than a stud
2. Backlock rather than any other type of lock

Add to that the integrity that the company shows and that the Man Himself spends so much time responding to posts.

I got into Spyderco's when i was in my early 20's, after seeing one clipped to a Policeman's shirt. He was kind enough to show me the knife.

Its been a slippery slope since. LMAO!

Spyderco makes a great knife for a reasonable price. So do many companies.

What I like about Spyderco, the thing that trumps other companies of equal quality, is that Spyderco, led by Sal Glesser, listens to its customers, and more than any other company, gives them what they need and want. At the same time, they're constantly introducing new knives filling the niches we didn't know existed; knives that we need, even if we didn't know that we needed them until we see them. Kershaw is a close second, but Spyderco is the best when it comes to working for their customers.

I have had a "relationship" with Spyderco ever since I bought my first Endura back in 1992. The opening hole and overall feel just did it for me. Over the years I have tried out several other brands, still picking up Spydies inbetween. Somewhere along the way I stopped and took stock of my growing collection and what it was that I really liked. It's been 4 years since I have been going "steady", buying Spyderco only. I'm at the point where I just am not interested in any other brands. My wife "understands" my passion and lets me collect and play with my toys :D

I also love the interaction between the Spyder-folks and the forum members, and I really appreciate them sending a catalogue to me all the way in South Africa.

And hey, who else has a Mule Team.....

ergonomics. quality. price. beauty.

lots of hawkbills, all different kinds, and they're good at making them.

lots of cool wharnies.

the spyderhole...that says it all!

Agent Starling :D

What's a 'sprint run'?

Doc

Doc,
A Sprint Run is typically when we bring back an older model with a variation (new steel, different materials). Sprint Runs are typically 600, 1200 or sometimes 1500 pieces. Once they are sold out, that's it, so they are only available for a limited time.

-The opening hole is the best opening method on a folder to me, and they engineer them well in regards to hole to pivot distance etc. so they feel natural to operate.
-The ergonomics are exceptionally good, whether a two finger knife like the Spin or a larger knife like the Military.
-They have the best spine jimping I've used (Current Para's, Caly 3, Endura 4 etc., the fine style they currently use).
-Good steel selection. I've really come to like their ZDP189 folders lately.
-Knives like the Native, Caly 3, Paramilitary, Centofante 3, Tenacious and Kiwi get your hand right next to the cutting edge, giving excellent leverage during cuts.
-Wire clips. They should be used on more models.
-Secure locks that are easy to manipulate one handed.
-Enjoy the blade shapes they use.
-Direct communication with Sal is great.
