Why does a knife hobby lead to other funky hobbies?

first serious hobby was collecting money. after i had a good " collection ", then i started on other things.:D

There is a very fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness.' I don't know about you guys, but I've sure crossed that line many times. Otherwise, why would I have so many knives, so many flashlights, (at last count I had 12 flashlights,) so damn many fire making tools, (none of them Bic's or Zippos,) ((how many fire steels can you really use?!?)) My wife put her foot down at 14 camera bags. Fortunately, 'sanity' is nothing more than madness put to good use, and my flashlights do get used. Two of my knives do get used. I have a lovely flint&steel kit that does get used. And I certainly need a good camera bag, right? Maybe I should collect vintage airplanes...

There's something about being able to make whatever the heck you want to. Those "man toys" include machine tools!

I don't think one leads into the other... I just think that most of us are of a similar personality type. We tend to be imaginative, adventurous, and inquisative. Follow that up with the fact that our personality types leave us going into situations that many others don't like Wilderness Excusrions, Survival Trips, Military Service, LE Service, and other adventurous endevours... we tend to be more aware of what's going on around us or the things that can and do happen in life. People who see us as odd tend to be the very happy go lucky type that wonder thought life thinking nothing bad can happen and that everyone just wants to get along. So we dive into hobbies such as knives, guns, gear and such because we want the tools to address those things that can and do happen in life. The main difference between me and a Normy (Some call them sheep) is that if my tire blows out on the side of the road I have a tool bag in my truck pack with not just the crap the include with vehicle from the factory... but real tools that do the job better... So my tire is changed or repaired in 10 minutes and I'm back on my way... the other person probably won't know how to use the factory tools included with the vehicle if they've even kept them in the vehicle to begin with... and they will most likely need to rely on the kindness of someone else. We constantly search for better gear to address what challenges life may toss at us... and if you can ever explain this to a sheep in a meaningful way... you'll find they'll go out a buy their first Leatherman, or Benchmade, or Surefire or whatever flavor you have. I believe we tend to be more thoughtful and passionate about life... which is why we often get into heated debates about whose ideas are more sound. But in the end... we are all of a kind. We see what is actually going on around us.

Agree 100%! I think most people don't see the need to carry a knife (or flashlight, or multi-tool, ect) because they've never really thought about all the uses. But once you do start carrying a pocket knife around, then you realize that a Leatherman (or whatever your preference is) might be handy. Then you run into a situation where you need a light and don't have one, so the next day you grab a Surefire. And one thing leads to another, and that's how you end up with all this stuff. I don't really think it's a bad thing, it's better to have and not need than to need and not have. And I know for myself, the people who think I'm odd and don't understand the "obsessions" are some of the first people to come running to me when they need to borrow a knife, or a pair of pliers, or a light, ect. Being prepared for 90% of the possible outcomes is never a bad thing, in fact I think it's quite the opposite. Like Steel said, most of us here have pretty much the same outlook on life, so when one of us gets a cool new toy, the rest want it.....at least that's usually what happens with me. :p

People who like knives tend to have many interests, leading on to different hobbies. These are healthy aspects that make for fulfilling lives.

Now that you mentioned it I've always been the kinda guy who want's to be prepared, packing everything possible whenever leaving on a longer trip.
And that is so true about people who come borrowing your stuff! ;)
Besides I like being odd and weird so I couldn't have chosen these interests any better. :p

Guns--knives--flashlights--watches----took up knot tying when I saw all the cool lanyards everybody was putting on their stuff-----just never ends.

Haha, I forgot to mention that too! After I saw what some people were doing I went to the local Bass Pro and grabbed 400 feet of paracord (got a good deal.....or at least that's what I told myself! :p). Now I'm trying out a ton of different knots and stuff. It never ends!

It's in our DNA. WE would look for better natural materials for tools and modify and collect them for survival.

First it starts with "gadgets" which are broadly defined. Ahhh...then one discovers high-end knives and moves perhaps into customs. We begin to accumulate things that are better...some outlandishly so, relative to the 19.95 Wal-mart pocket knife. Then because the knife hobby gets really expensive, our craving for new toys is not fufilled, hence the diversion to flashlights, until we find that they may be outlandishly expensive as well. Pens and multi-tools fit in there along with firearms...you get the picture. One addiction feeds another and as you become exposed to more and more "things" some just seem to catch on. I flirted with pens for a little bit, and also with watches to some extent, but nothing like knives.

Occaisionally, I'll be an Atwood tool junky, but not the outrageous stuff like one-off or damascus and talonite type stuff.I have some decent flashlights, about 20 handguns and enough Victorinox swiss army knives to start a small museum. Then the various electronic widgets, but those are for the mass market. I just comes from wanting to own something that is not only potentially useful, but "special" as well.

Knives, guns, gear, boots, etc... for me they're all the same-war gear.

Knives just happen to be more sexy ;)

I'm sure glad I don't have the gear-itch that you guys do.

I only have five leathermans.
And five surefires.
And four maxpedition bags.
And seven knives.
And four handguns.
And one long gun.
And two GPS units.
And one Rolex.
And I just pre-ordered a Kindle 2.

But I've been eyeing that surefire pen, and I haven't bought it (yet) so I know I must not have the gear itch that you guys do.

:D

i'm getting into watches- +
sure, a good production knife is fine, but being on here really gives you that extra push and urge to buy a custom

Only ONE Rolex? We might not let you post here any more. :p

Hmmmm.... I've been thinking about that one myself...

When you order your SureFire pen, make certain you get it in a camouflage pattern. I don't know were you do most of your writing, but both the RealTree or Urban Disruption Pattern are effective... ;)

It is all a matter of exposure. One day we are stumbling around with our meager tools, not giving much thought to them. Then somehow, something clicks and we realize we want a better tool.

Then the internet.

And the next thing you know, you have new knives, new flashlights, new watches, new survival gear, ect ect. :)

And despite the loss of cash, we love every second of it!

You seriously can't argue with that!
Yesterday got my PD30 (amazing btw) and my dad saw it and I let him try it but then he asked for the price "50 euros" -> dad's expression: >.< followed by "You should think more carefully how you spend your money."
But I don't really care. :D
Besides taken the current flashligt market, 50e for such a torch is pretty damn good!
