Cover up such a lovely stonewashed blade with that black paint?

I've read that the blade on the Recon 1 was stonewashed in some other posts so I thought I would take off that black paint on my new one. Man was I surprised how well it looked after all that scraping. I'm really happy with it. Great knife for the $. Nice and beefy.

I could never understand why either. There's about 3 or 4 models that I'd buy, but the coating stops me from buying them.

Probably the same reason they don't finish the hollow grind far enough and leave a 1/8in of the edge un-sharpened WTF.

Since they don't actually "make" any knives, nor personally add the coating, it might have to do with the SEAL teams so much in love with the thing that its easier to just place one order and be done with it. Saves the embarrassment of the fellas getting the wrong batch and freaking over an unstealthy blade. Greater corrosion resistance as well. Then again what do I know.

Black is tacticool. :D

That's a great finish though. It looks like the finish on the Ritter Grips.

I honestly think their fans prefer the black tacticool look. A while ago they had a poll on their site where people could vote for black coating or satin and most voted for black.

i would have to agree with the others on this one, its tacticool, theres no point in covering aus-8, its pretty corrosion resistant.

hey sherman614, i love your vids man, welcome to the forums.

Actually CS knives in AUS-8a have been known to rust with minimal exposure to whatever, especially the bead blasted ones. I have an older Voyager with specs of rust on it I got in trade and it doesn't appear to have ever been used. I stripped a 1st gen AK and loved the outcome. I now have a well done stripped Recon 1 with the Triad lock that somebody went one step further and polished! It's a big beautiful clip point blade that I enjoy much better than the coated variety. BM puts out plenty of black coated blades and I don't see any sweeping generalizations aimed at their "fans". I'd add BM's coatings are only marginally better at wear than CS as well. The old CS coatings were very durable, almost crinkle coat style ala Busse. I don't know why they made the switch to teflon or whatever it is, probably a lot cheaper.

I also have a (new-style) Recon 1 that the previous owner removed the "paint" from the blade (and locking lever). I went ahead and polished the blade and locking lever, and I have to say that it looks excellent. BUT, I do wish that somehow this folder had a "flipper", rather than thumb-studs...That would make this a perfect folder...At-least IMO.

Glockman, does your lock bar sit kind of low? It lines up perfectly with the blade as far as being level but it's lower than the jimping, looks odd.
thanks,
K

Nope they're tacticool too. I'm an equal opportunity maker funner. :D

Back lock knives (especially with those with a mid lock) can have a a lot of detent to overcome. That would require using something other than the Tri-ad lock. Flippers only seem to work with frame lock or liner locks.

Every company coats their blades because that is what generates the most sales. The coated blades sell better. Plain and simple.

I don't see how a flipper would work on a lockback because there is no way for it to stick out with the lock being in the way.

No, the lock-bar on my Recon 1 sits pretty much flush. The fit & finish of my copy is 100% perfect. The lock-up is smooth, but tight, and somewhat "stiff".

Yup, I don't see how a flipper on this knife would work, but it sure would be nice, as I'm pretty much addicted to flippers.:D.

That is perty. I stripped the RPG I got from them, and it looks much cooler in silver. Then I coated it in orange paint. Kind of hard to lose in the first place, but now it sticks out like a sore thumb against any background.
