Why does spyderco take so much heat???!

My only gripe is that my recent purchases have sharper Spyderholes that cuts into my nail when I open it. As well, the spine is sharp enough to cut with:D. Nothing a little sandpaper can't fix, but it would be nice if the knives were more well rounded.

For me it's all about quality vs. price. Love the design. Love the ergonomics. Love the steels. Love the company. Just wish they held up better in real use (not just in stabbing people or opening dvd cases) or was priced accordingly. There are so many better options at almost every price level of Spydercos offerings people are bound to be disappointed with a lot of their products.

The sharp edge on the hole provides nice purchase for the meat of your thumb to open the knife. My thumbnail doesn't even touch the edge. I have a used Spyderco I bought that the previous owned sanded the opening hole and almmost made it completely useless.

Please elaboate with some kind of specific examples. I'm not quite understanding your comment.

Ok. I love the Stretch 2 but for much less I can get several Cold Steels, Victorinox Farmer (etc), a bunch of Kerhaws, EKA Swede 8 or 10 Wood (etc), a number of Bokers, G10 Byrds and so on...

If they sold the Stretch in G10 for the same price as they do now with the FRN version it'd be more reasonable.

Oh really? Want to back that one up in a meaningful way?

Sure. This forum provides enough examples. Again, not a swipe at Sal and his company, who make great stuff, but I've read people on here, for instance, slam cold steel for having knives made in China and two threads later brag on the tenacious for being such a great knife. I've seen suggestion threads asking for help in choosing between two different model benchmades and people suggest every spyderco model on the market.

That hardly confirms the claim that "...there is more absolute 'fanboiism' in regards to Spyderco than any other manufacturer."

Wow, didn't know that I had to provide legal documentation to back up an opinion. I guess opinions are only ok on this forum when it involves starting the 1047th "Cold Steel sucks" thread. If anything is said which has anything negative to do with Spyderco.....wow......

That's not the point. It's that you made a pretty bold and provocative claim about "Spyderco," "fanboyism," and "fanboys" that you are unwilling to back up.

I'm not unwilling...just curious as to what evidence you require for my OPINION to be valid?

It's my OPINION based from reading this forum.

i don't see any more Fanaticism by spyderco fans than any other brand. i think fans of other brands tend to ignore their own brands over the top Fanaticism, and notice it in other brands they aren't a huge fan of themselves. i'm guilty of it myself.....and i am not really a fanatic of any brand.

strider and busse fans beat spyderco's in extreme Fanaticism hands down. that said being a fan isn't so bad is it? at least not for the company anyways. sorry Marcinek, i have no evidence to back this opinion up. ;)

I would submit that this thread alone would be evidence...The OP claims that Spyderco receives so much 'heat' when, in fact, I see fewer complaints about Spyderco than any other knife manufacturer. Moreover, he claims to have ordered a Griptilian but thinks it might be 'sketchy'

I don't have a favorite knife manufacturer and look more at models I like rather than companies. Do I like Spyderco? Sure. Do I want every model they make? No. The same can be said for Kershaw, Cold Steel, Benchmade, Boker, etc etc...

I suppose its nice to see some facts when someone starts throwing out claims about knee-jerk fanboyism. Kinda prevents one from being viewed as a knee-jerk "hater."

But you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

You are confusing my opinion of some posters with that of Spyderco itself. I think that's the problem. I've seen two other posters in this very thread agree with me. Any reason you are ignoring them?

If anything, I've found that Spyderco takes way less heat than the other major American knife companies (Kershaw, Benchmade, Cold Steel). Besides, any Spyderco hate is immediately met with the shrill whining of hundreds of Spyderco fans, so it's barely noticeable. :p

Apparently you need to provide proof, otherwise your opinion is invalid.

No...I see no problem at all with having a strong brand preference. "Fanboy," like "hater," implies something else entirely though. I, actually, don't have a Spyderco brand preference. That said, am I going to start calling the people who do prefer Spyderco "fanboys"? No. I'm sure they have made their decision based on experience and rational thought. I trust their judgement...I just happen to disagree with them.

Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof.

I have no issue whatsoever with those who prefer Spyderco or any other brand. It's when they start bringing Spyderco into discussions about non Spyderco brands or make hypocritical statements about where other brands are made that I have a problem.

I don't see my claim as being extraordinary. Again, for the fifth time in this thread. I actually like a lot of Spyderco models.

I get that you have no issue with Spyderco's knives. Just with the fanboys who like Spyderco. And with the rampant fanboyism Spyderco elicits. That's cool.
