Why does spyderco take so much heat???!

I get that you have no issue with Spyderco's knives. Just with the fanboys who like Spyderco. And with the rampant fanboyism Spyderco elicits. That's cool.

No problem with Spyderco fans....just those who trash other knife companies; especially those who make knives overseas.

Truthfully, I think the greatest knife idea which has not yet been made is a Spyderco designed SAK. That would be a must have.

I don't have a favorite knife manufacturer and look more at models I like rather than companies. Do I like Spyderco? Sure. Do I want every model they make? No. The same can be said for Kershaw, Cold Steel, Benchmade, Boker, etc etc...

the same as most folks do. no criticism from me, other than i don't see anymore fan Fanaticism from spyderco fans than i do for any other brand. alas i have no proof though......so my take on it is purely from my own perspective.

No...I see no problem at all with having a strong brand preference. "Fanboy," like "hater," implies something else entirely though. I, actually, don't have a Spyderco brand preference. That said, am I going to start calling the people who do prefer Spyderco "fanboys"? No. I'm sure they have made their decision based on experience and rational thought. I trust their judgement...I just happen to disagree with them.

i make no assumptions on folks who i read a post or two they typed. i could see how someone might take offense to being called a fanboy or into fanboyism though. it's in poor taste in hindsight.... i'll go back and change it to "Fanaticism." thanks for the critique.

I certainly didn't mean any critique. It's not in poor taste. And I have no issue with an ything you posted.

It's just that it's a "charged" word. If I were a Spyderco afficionado (and I'm not), I might be a little ticked if somebody implied widespread "fanboyism" among Spyderco fans without justification. Like I mentioned earlier...same thing with "hater."

We'd be better off without both words, in my book.

Overseas production, 8cr13mov steel, dislike the looks, etc. People will get their panties in a bunch over just about anything. Welcome to the internet.

The only time I usually see a two page argument about fanboy-ism in a thread is when there is actual fanboy-ism involved on one side or the other.

I feel like I pretty much summed up the last two page argument in my post on the first page.

Suum cuique.

They make great quality knives that are efficient slicers but they are ugly as hell.

I think Spyderco is one of those brands of knives that ignites passions of the lovers of them and also the folks that dislike them. This is an enviable position for any knife builder to occupy, IMO. It means that your knives will get a look from most buyers and that is really all you can hope for. Some will select one of the Spyderco models, some will select a model built by one of the other fine manufacturers out there. The beauty of it is that there are so many great choices available, and honestly, most of them will provide great service and performance to their owners.

I have only one Spyderco (Para 2), and it is truly an excellent knife (it will not be my last). The ergonomics are fantastic and the knife fits me very well. It's a joy to use and I love its well thought out design, including the distinctive deployment hole in the blade!! Knife people know Spyderco and while some may not particularly care for their unusual looks, they do respect their high reputation amongst knife users.

Having said that, I also own fine knives made by Buck, Kershaw, CRKT, ZT, Svord, Opinel, Camillus and others. I carry them all for EDC and enjoy the variety of using such nice knives.

A Spyderco belongs in any collection of EDC knives due to the commitment level this company has made to providing tools that are well made and deliver great performance. They constantly try to improve their knives, expand their selection of blades and actually listen to their customers. They've earned their place in the knife world as a company that truly wants to supply high quality tools to their customers.

I wish more companies operated this way, and I'm not just talking about knife manufacturers!

Ok. I love the Stretch 2 but for much less I can get several Cold Steels, Victorinox Farmer (etc), a bunch of Kerhaws, EKA Swede 8 or 10 Wood (etc), a number of Bokers, G10 Byrds and so on...

If they sold the Stretch in G10 for the same price as they do now with the FRN version it'd be more reasonable.
That makes sense, thanks. :)
