Why doesn't anyone carry a knife?

I've found that many have, for whatever reason, gotten away from the mindset. In the last couple of months, I've given a small flashlight and a small folder to several people; mostly women. Each and everyone of them have told me that, by having those tools, they use them more than they'd ever imagined.

Invest in the future; give knives and flashlights. Doesn't have to be large or expensive, but decent quality only reinforces the idea.

When I've given a knife to a friend etc. they have said the same thing. I wish I could do it more.

Hipsterism is the consumer subculture of seeking and flaunting obscure things simply for the sake of their obscurity. The ones you hear misusing the word 'ironic'.

If hipsters start carrying knives, they'll be full medieval replicas, or neo-primitive stone daggers. Until enough of them copy the act, at which point they'll denounce knife-carrying as 'mainstream' and move on.

Your words are more true than you know.

People living in urban areas are often soft and distant from the tools which built their civilizations, as hoplophobia sets into European and North American cultures. It's not "Hmm, I don't think I'll need to cut anything, so I'll leave my knife at home"; it's "Why would I want to carry such a weapon? I don't plan on stabbing anyone".

And, yes, I do look down on these people, and I make no apologies for it. These are the unprepared people who die in horror movies.

I never leave the house without at least one knife, and I generally have at least three on me, unless I'm just around the house (one) or in a government building (none). Yes, I get asked to cut things, and yes, I do it with a smug facial expression.

You show em! I will have to look up "hoplophobia".

I've always been a knife guys since I was a kid. I always found the utility most appealing, followed by the artfulness of design. I grew up playing outside and in the outdoors, I don't think many kids do that these days (sad). For me knives are the next most useful thing to me other than my phone. With those two things I can pretty much accomplish any task.

Take your pick of what type of guy you are:

Outdoorsman = Utility/Survival
Businessman = Utility/Refinement - The right pocket knife can outdo the finest of watches
Everyday Joe = Utility

Maybe you weren't around when almost every boy or man carried some type of pocketknife. And it wasn't considered scary or a big deal. Also, nobody I knew of ever pulled one out in a fight. Nowadays, people in general act either afraid when they see a little SAK, or self-righteously ask why you carry it. YES, society in general has been brainwashed in recent decades, especially since 9/11, about how evil knives are. If it's just them not wanting to carry knives, then why is it they also don't like or want anyone else to carry a knife, either??

OTOH, I feel that knife carriers who purposely show off by whipping their knives open with a flourish in public or in front of non-knife people are morons (to put it mildly). I met a guy like that who said, "I don't give a **** about what someone might think. I'll whip my knife open any way I want, anywhere I want. If they don't like it, **** them." Guys like that do more to contribute to the negative image of knife carriers than any movie. They either don't know or care that the majority speak with their votes.

Exactly, everyone that I knew from when I was very young carried some kind of knife on them all the time......

There was never anyone who asked if anyone had a knife because they already had one... ;)

The newer generations????? Well.......

I couldn't agree more. The need of a good father is HUGE, yet people like to discount it these days.

+1,000

Without a father figure there can/will be a huge issue and or issues properly raising young boys into men....

Maybe that's the reason why a lot of the men are more like women these days...... ;)

I recently changed jobs from a big-city corporation to a seagoing research vessel. about 50% of folks on board carry a blade of some kind. It's a lovely change. Yes, I'm still the weirdo anyway.

"Looking for a new gastronomic utensil to show everybody just what’s on the plate for the next hipster trend? Toss the forks, spoons, sporks, and chopsticks and reach for a Knight’s dress dagger. You’ll be the talk of the vegan bistro as you unsheathe your ancient cutlery and literally go medieval on that tofu!"

just now googled hipsters + dagger

*facepalm*

They invented these things called scissors, which is like two knives joined at a pivot. It eliminates the need for a cutting board, and provides more control when cutting, which is why it is the preferred cutting tool for people doing light cutting. At the construction site, farm, or woods, a knife can do heavier tasks. There is a reason why the knife is a less commonly used tool, other than nefarious government brainwashing.

Scissors? Knife? Both? :D

Nothing to rave over, but a handy item to have around the house. Ours gets more use than I would have expected.

Getting a little off topic here, but I was a HS teacher for 6 years. Almost always, the jackass/tough guy had no father around. They had no one to teach them how to behave as a young man, so they created their own culture of defiance and false bravado. When their mothers showed up, you could see they were lost little momma's boys. There's many reasons for it in modern society, but more kids are growing up without dads, that's for sure.

Where I'm from everybody has a knife....some multiple. But we are just a bunch of dumb rednecks lol.

Businessman = Utility/Refinement - The right pocket knife can outdo the finest of watches

Still trying to figure this one out. Watch should be on weak side wrist and knife in strong side pocket. A right handed man wears his watch on his left wrist and carries his knife in his right pocket. A left handed man should wear his watch on his right wrist and carry his knife in his left pocket.

I don't see anything wrong with that, as long as they are both competent parents who teach the children they raise the skills and values they need.

i do, but lets not get into that here on the forum. i apologize for bringing it up. :D

Ah, but then we'd have to get all the watch manufacturers to put all the adjustment knobs on the other side of the watch. (For those of us who wear 'traditional' watches.)

Should never manipulate a wristwatch's crown while it is on your wrist. Puts lateral stress on the stem. Chronograph buttons really don't matter as they can be manipulated easily regardless of which wrist the watch is on.

I'm a lefty and once owned a Glycene with the crown on the left. Really just a gimmick as it was exactly the same watch, movement, and case just reversing the dial's feet --- basically just rotating the dial 180 degrees.

Not everyone should carry a knife.
Some people are clumsy oafs that'll cut their fingers off, and some are irresponsible idiots...that'll probably cut your fingers off.

And it has nothing to do with no dads, two dads, or two moms.
The REAL explanation of why less people carry is this: perforations/snack-packs/office jobs.
