By the same token, they tolerate me even though I'm often a jerk. Almost sorta like family. (Plus there's an "ignore" button for those who've had enough of me. Internet does have some advantages!:) )

I'm probably being a jerk again, but you'll at least know who I am.
OFTEN????? Fatzo, Fatzo, Fatzo!!!!!Try all the time.:p :p :D :D Only kidding Bro!!! I am glad to see you posting more and I hope you are feeling better.

Yep...good words Fitzo(Mike) and I agree completely.

In the spirit of openess and in an effort to promote comradery, I am going to take off the mask of secrecy and change my avatar to a picture of myself. It was gettin kinda sweaty under that thing anyway.

Looks like I must have struck a nerve:eek:. I don't know if you noticed it or not but you can type anything you want in the profile. The point of that is, the profile information shouldn't be considered a source of comfort which determines whether you will share your deep, dark, busted a** secrets........................

............. But until then, to berate the newbie or occasional tire-kicker-question-asker because they haven't filled out the loosey, goosey forum profile information is really contrary to the way the forum is set up.

You hit no nerve. It's really not worth getting upset by this nonsense.

I have no deep, dark, busted ass secrets as you so wise assly put it, just a few decades+ of learning things on my own. They had no internet when I was making knives to demand info on. You found a book if you wanted to know something. A very few were lucky, and might know an experienced maker to learn from, but that was few and far between no matter what the knife glad rags say. Knifemaking was not an open community.

You have no more right to any free information from experienced makers here than they have to come to your house and rob you. It's given freely by these same makers as they WANT to help out. It's done from the kindness of their hearts, and often they have to defend the information supplied to people that feel they deserve it.

Yes you can lie on your profile, and I'm guessing some do. How long do you think it will take before they slip up and someone finds out they are a liar. Not a good way to start out in the knifemaking world.

By putting false info in your profile, you cheat yourself. You might need help on something and have a phony location, someone who might live in your real hometown might look and just pass that by as he can't help as you are listed as somewhere else.

Another reason I don't like posting anymore is the wise ass attitude and mean spiritedness many display now on forums and elsewhere, all over a piece of steel. It's soured me completely about knifemaking and knives in general.

Time for a reality check and getting a life. Courtesy is a free commodity that actually pays dividends. you might want to invest in some.

I agree with you Mike. Anyone that comes into a forum with an un-curtious, demanding attitude won't get very far and nobody has to respond to them. Lieing in a profile is stupid and I have never done it and the example you give is one reason why it is ill advised.

It is possible to read more into my posts than I intended to convey. That, we computer geeks like to say, is a "feature" of forums and computer communications in general.

I meant no disrespect so please accept my apology if offended you or anyone else.

Wow, I'm surprised at the rancor this thread produced! Communication through electronic media really is difficult. Personally I agree with Bruce and what others like Mike expressed, for me it's nice to know someone's name and what part of the country they are from at the very least when you are sharing information with them. This was the first knifemaking forum I participated on (many many moons ago now!) and I can't begin to tell you the amount of labor and time saving information I learned here that many older makers had to figure out for themselves. I had read the available books though and still do seek out information in books as well as forums and personal experimentation. I didn't start out with my name for my account but I always had it in my signature and did provide my location and a brief bio. While I don't post here as much these days I do check in frequently and the sense of commiunity is the reason why. I now have the pleasure of sharing information I have learned over the years, often as is the case here, quite freely, but total anonymity doesn't inspire confidence and may make me a bit more reticent to respond.

(Dang! I just noticed my knifemaker registration has expired again!)

I just don't like it when someone from here sends me an email asking questions about a custom job and don't give me their real name. You know when you get an email through BF and it shows their BF name and they don't tell you their real name. I think it's kind of rude when this happens.

Although I did not use my name as a forum handle, if I were to contact one of you guys for knife information off the forum, I would put my real name @ the bottom. Sometimes I put my first name @ the bottom of my posts. I think my profile is fairly legit, too. Have to check. But that whole OPSEC and COMSEC thing is definately real too. There could be some lurkers here in the forum that could take your contact information and not even post once. Bring on the garbage mail and a subscription to... underwater basketweaving (that's the best I could come up with off the top of my head).
