Why don't you post in the Custom sub-forum?

It's very hard to believe some of you custom makers didn't know about the 'Custom and Handmade' forum :D

Start believing. I had no idea till today. I thought thats what our gallery area was for. I don't mind posting stuff in both spots if y'all dont mind me doing it.

I'm all over BF, and had still missed that spot somehow.:o

sometimes it can take quite awhile just to peruse the makers forum and to read any awnsers to questions ive posted. if im not careful ill use all my free time on the comp. reading and talking about knives instead of working in my shop or improving my shop and trying to make a knife better than my last one.....willy

Shoot Don my wife supports my fishing habit, most days she's got the boat hooked up, my lunch packed and the fishing reports printed and laying on the table before daylight. You'd think she was trying to get rid of me. :D:D

It is a fact that spending time on the forums takes away from shop time, but I think it is well worth it as long as it isn't over done.

I've never even looked at it. I'll have to give it a read now and then based on the postive comments here. I'd love to be able to read and post as much as I used but I've just been so darned busy this last year I run out of time.

I put all of my custom ordered knives on there after there done, it's a good place to get a lot of feedback!

it is one of the sections I check most days. I like to look at what makers are posting (even if is already spoken for, or that some one just picked up). It is helpful to look at the prices in the for sale forum, and look at what styles/makers etc go fast, and for what prices. I find that the that the newer/less experienced posters (ie this is my first knife, or first attempt at this style etc) get a more positive helpful feed back than some one posting their expensive custom.

I post on the custom forum,… though my knives are usually well received, it's been hard to squeeze in some of my opinions. It has been a tough forum and has been collector dominated. However, it seems to be going through some positive changes now and getting better.

I see it as an opportunity for improvement and growth. How many other places are there where collectors AND makers can get together for a healthy exchange of ideas and all feel equally welcome, with the same kind of traffic as the custom forum?

I think if more makers started posting there, it would really be beneficial for all, and help it reach it's full potential.

I like to post Black powder coated knives with bolted on G-10 handles, it really makes the collectors ill:D:D

I knew of the custom handmade area before this place?

It came to mind that after reading this thread that I must be out of line to post over there....but I have improved my work by doing so and will continue to post.

Thanks
Spencer

The Custom Forum IS changing for the better and Tai has had a hand in it :D

It's been great to see many makers that hadn't visited the custom forum, spending some time over there. Hopefully we will see more of you in the future.

I enjoy reading the posts over there. My main hang out is the Wilderness and Survival forum.

I did'nt think user quality hunters & edc utilities would generate much interest. Always seemed to be billion doller damascus'n ivory.:D:D

Now that I'm about cought up w/ commitments I'll have to post some there as well as here.

***Edited out***

I had posted some comments, but think now they are in bad taste.

The forum is a great one 99% of the time, and the 1% can be solved through use of the ignore button. Im hoping to see lots of makers knives over there, and of ALL skill levels. The forum had recently turned into the "museum quality custom knife forum" instead of a single place for discussing all custom knives in a productive way.

I'll just leave this thread with a few quotes from various posters on the custom sub forum as examples of why I dont really post there, and particularly not anything i've made or am working on. Attitude is a lot about what makes a place either a community or a place to be avoided, whether it's snobbery, general rudeness, trying to hold everyone to such a high level of museam perfection that it's unrealistic, etc.

"If XXX can use the Forums as a venue to advertise and facilitate the sale his wares as a Registered User, than I am certainly within my right as a Platinum Member with a focused interest in collecting custom knives at fair prices to opine where I see fit. If it is not nice or kind, so be it."

"every knife has a flaw. That being said, the price of the knife should be commensurate with the mistakes. Remember you are being paid for your mistakes..."

"The "best you can do" isn't enough... ...Sometimes, makers post knives when they should know better."

"Collectors who buy these knives are rewarding bad knife makers and punishing good makers they never heard of. Buyers of these knives are heard to say "I buy what I like". "

All it takes is a few very active high post count people to completely turn people off of a forum / community, and to drive away people who might otherwise become members of it, partiuclarly when another area of the same "location" can garner the same critiques needed to become a better maker without the hedaches and hastle of dealing with people for whom you can do no right.

Well said, Justin. After reading over there since Nick posted this thread, I can fully understand why many makers here would feel better put to show knives here in Shoptalk/ Gallery and ask for constructive criticism that is less influenced by factors that come into play in the Custom forum.

After reading what some of the regulars have posted in Custom regarding what should "deserve" their attention, I would think Nick now has his answer why more don't post over there.

Ive gone back and forth all week.

Unfortunately, i think its less than ten people who are causing 99% of the "rift."

I am not sure dogpiling that forum with pictures of our knives is the answer to what seemed to be a problem of people being rude...if the problem hasn't changed, its just adding cannon fodder and opening up the situation to become more inflamed.

I actually think the opposite might be better, with makers trying to stay in the makers gallery and limit discussions to other maker feedback, discussion on aspect of making the knives, with others able to chime in on the discussion, but not to open a post and hit reply simply to inform the maker that they don't like a knife.

The "custom knife forum" could be renamed to "custom knife collecting" and collectors could all discuss their recent purchases, knives they have seen for sale, their likes and dislikes and not worry about us "thin skinned" makers getting offended by offensive comments. They could even have sub-forums split out by price so that collectors wouldn't "waste their time" having to view what they consider "unworthy" knives.

The above is half tongue-in-cheek, but also doesn't seem like such a bad idea when I really think about it. After all, if all custom knives aren't welcome on that forum, they need to at least set some guidelines on what qualifies a knife of being ok to post without the maker feeling like they are being slapped back into their shop until they are "ready" to be judged.
