Wow!
I've read thru this whole thread and the other "related" threads and what I keep coming back to is that this whole issue stems primarily from:
1) a lack of basic courtesy and
2) The faceless nature of the Internet making it worse!
I am an "eclectic" collector - forged/stock removal/folders and even the odd sword. I am also an improving but amateur knifemaker. In pursuing my collecting, I have had the opportunity to meet and converse with many excellent makers and have ALWAYS been impressed with their willingness to give advice/help to me, a rank amateur...whether I've ever bought a knife from them or not!
In fact, I have ordered knives from makers EXPRESSLY because of how great they are as people as well as craftsman - and I have never been disappointed when I've done this!
I've shown my knives to some makers whom you all know very well, and received fair critiques and great tips - but I confess I've done this in person, or by emailing them fotos. Mostly because I am a generally quiet person, but also because the "impersonality" of any Internet interaction does not appeal to me.
I will comment on the odd knife that gets posted...but only when I have something positive to say. I think it is only common courtesy, even when critique is solicited, to be civil and not say something you wouldn't say to the person's face. If you hate the knife...move on to the next post!! If you like it, say why, not just "you rock, dude"
In my opinion, as a collector, one's own likes/dislikes unerringly color one's appreciation of any particular knife, and there is not a single collector/dealer/maker I know of who has infallible taste
( I think there are some who THINK they do

)
some like Picasso, some like Impressionists
some like Porsches, some like Ferraris
some like Chevys, some like Fords
And it is ALL good!!!!!
Having tried making knives, I have the utmost respect for anyone doing so for a living, even if they make stuff that will never float my boat, and as Nick said - if you love what you do, keep doing it!!!
Try to improve constantly, learn from others and help others - something I think knifemakers do very well in general.
For the collectors - BUY what you like, whether for investment, personal satisfaction, protection - whatever! Running other collectors down, or running down those who make knives you don't like.....classless behavior in my opinion. Knifemakers need collectors and vice-versa....neither "side" has the market cornered on taste, nor "right", nor knowledge.
To be fair, I should also say that if anyone disagrees with me - feel free!
This is just MY OPINION - not better or worse than anybody elses!!!!
I appreciate the fact that a large majority of posters really do try to be polite and constructive, and I think that does you credit - keep it up!
Read what you're writing twice before you post it - you know, like "measure twice and cut once" - if it occurs to you that you might be acting like an ass...then you probably are
Kumbaya!
oh, and by the way to Mr Wheeler - I'd would be proud to own one of your knives...but I'm getting old, and may not live long enough for you to finish one - haha
