Why don't you post in the Custom sub-forum?

I'm the same way - I even owned a very nice piece by Tai at some point:

BINGO!

Nice post!

Thank you! :)

Maybe I'm on ignore too, in which case at least know that I "get" alot of your posts, especially some on the other forum. I made a commitment to not post into those threads again, but someone needs to help them understand that sometimes teaching isnt telling someone how to think or what to do, but instead giving them something that they instantly REACT to, and later through reflection of their own reactions, the lesson shines through. Sometimes, that reflection never happens and the lesson is lost, but if thats the case, "telling" them wouldnt have gotten very far in the first place.

Wow!

I've read thru this whole thread and the other "related" threads and what I keep coming back to is that this whole issue stems primarily from:

1) a lack of basic courtesy and
2) The faceless nature of the Internet making it worse!

I am an "eclectic" collector - forged/stock removal/folders and even the odd sword. I am also an improving but amateur knifemaker. In pursuing my collecting, I have had the opportunity to meet and converse with many excellent makers and have ALWAYS been impressed with their willingness to give advice/help to me, a rank amateur...whether I've ever bought a knife from them or not!

In fact, I have ordered knives from makers EXPRESSLY because of how great they are as people as well as craftsman - and I have never been disappointed when I've done this!

I've shown my knives to some makers whom you all know very well, and received fair critiques and great tips - but I confess I've done this in person, or by emailing them fotos. Mostly because I am a generally quiet person, but also because the "impersonality" of any Internet interaction does not appeal to me.

I will comment on the odd knife that gets posted...but only when I have something positive to say. I think it is only common courtesy, even when critique is solicited, to be civil and not say something you wouldn't say to the person's face. If you hate the knife...move on to the next post!! If you like it, say why, not just "you rock, dude"

In my opinion, as a collector, one's own likes/dislikes unerringly color one's appreciation of any particular knife, and there is not a single collector/dealer/maker I know of who has infallible taste:D

( I think there are some who THINK they do:D)

some like Picasso, some like Impressionists

some like Porsches, some like Ferraris

some like Chevys, some like Fords

And it is ALL good!!!!!

Having tried making knives, I have the utmost respect for anyone doing so for a living, even if they make stuff that will never float my boat, and as Nick said - if you love what you do, keep doing it!!!
Try to improve constantly, learn from others and help others - something I think knifemakers do very well in general.

For the collectors - BUY what you like, whether for investment, personal satisfaction, protection - whatever! Running other collectors down, or running down those who make knives you don't like.....classless behavior in my opinion. Knifemakers need collectors and vice-versa....neither "side" has the market cornered on taste, nor "right", nor knowledge.

To be fair, I should also say that if anyone disagrees with me - feel free!
This is just MY OPINION - not better or worse than anybody elses!!!!

I appreciate the fact that a large majority of posters really do try to be polite and constructive, and I think that does you credit - keep it up!

Read what you're writing twice before you post it - you know, like "measure twice and cut once" - if it occurs to you that you might be acting like an ass...then you probably are :D

Kumbaya!

oh, and by the way to Mr Wheeler - I'd would be proud to own one of your knives...but I'm getting old, and may not live long enough for you to finish one - haha:p

I can take criticism delivered however you wish to deliver it..... Between my years in the Army and working as a bouncer to earn extra money because my ex-wife is a fat, lazy, money blowing @Q#$#$ I am very hard to offend. I do prefer people that criticize me be somewhat polite and at least get off their high horse to speak to me.

OH HOT DANG!!!!! you've been SERVED!!!!

I don't post on the custom pages---because the blades i make are not custom. i do on occasion post a pic or two of some of my work and like the feed back as to where to improve or make it better--------the best feedback i've gotten was from Tai---short sweet and to the point when he said "i like it"
Tai--i'll bring a couple at the next Full Moon (even though i've given them up)

When i do post a knife its in the Custom forum simply because there is much more traffic there, and thats the crowd (the collector) that I want to show my knife.

I think this forum, would be a better place for tutorial and progress pics etc... When you actually show working steps in the making of the knife etc....

Skills have eroded, and my best knives are behind me, my best ideas never to be executed. I mostly spend my limited shoptime making small simple knives. For me, it's all about having fun where I can; and on those days when it's not fun, there is no reason to make an effort to force myself and suffer for it.

And probably why I should stay out of discussions by the more serious knifemakers.:o
I have to disagree with you Mike.

You have provided good fact based knowledge when it was needed. I've learned many things from you and I try to read every post you make.

My feeling exactly Mike. You are one the finest and level headed men on the forums. We can all learn from you. We have to practice to gain skills but we can gain knowledge from people with knowledge of your kind.

Chuck, Bruce...thank you for the kind words. Sometimes one just gets that feeling that a thread would have been better off without their input. :o Slowly, I learn....:)
