Why don't you post in the Custom sub-forum?

Well...... I don't post all that much like a few others. I like to read what everyone else has to say. If I am asked a question I will definitely answer the best I can. I'm also not very good with typing what I want to say. Which can be a bad thing, but I am trying to get better.

I love making knives like everyone else. The criticism that customers offer is what makes me strive to be better ( just like what Bill said).

Nick:)

Tanya, that was good, made me smile :) Well Said!

Guys, Joss is one of the collectors I listen to and he has never come across as rude. And no, I've never sold him a knife, so I'm not patronizing him :D Actually, I learn something from every collector who posts over there.

The negative replies on the Custom Forum are not the norm, they just get a lot more attention than the more abundant Positive replies. Seems like some are just looking at the negative and not the whole picture.

Down and dirty users are cool, I wish I had more time to make some but as a fulltime maker (with no other source of income) I have to work in the mid to upper end to make a living and this is where most of my interest is.

These forums are a tool and a great source of information, also good entertainment. I'm interested in what you guys are making and what those guys are buying. It's all good :) Let's just have fun!

I don't think skin thickness really has anything to do with being a good knifemaker, and it shouldn't have anything to do with being a successful knifemaker.

How did so many thin skinned makers become so successful? There must be ways.

I agree with Don though. Let's just call a truce, have fun and get on with our lives.

I think we've all made our points, and I bet the tone will change for the better on the custom board. I think it already has begun to. I‘d just like to see it open up and become more representative of the overall custom and handmade knife field, instead of being dominated by just a few outspoken elitist collecters and the trends they favor by personal tastes. :)

Don, I sell a wide variety of stuff. Early on in my career, I sort of catered to the "snoboisseurs", but after a while it really wasn't that much fun. I got myself boxed in and when I wanted to just make a good old user, or anything different no one would look at it. I finally broke through that barrier, and now enjoy doing whatever I like, whenever I like,... and there's a good solid market for all of it.

Perhaps it was simply bad timing to stumble into the threads I did, and it really is a pot of gold with only a couple turds in it that unfortunately made it hard to notice the shine for the stink. I never had the time to put the respirator and shade 4 lenses on before the smell overwhelmed me.

My bad. ;)

Turd is a bit strong, don't you think? Kinda interesting given the recurring comments here that knife buyers in the custom sub-forum are too blunt...

They are talking about another sub forum for "serious critique" over on the other board now. I think it would be a good idea, make things clear cut and end this free for all,... where the loudest mouth is always right.

Let's end this shouting contest.

I would vote for that, and I don't see why anyone should object.

As I stated earlier, Joss, there is a difference between blunt and obnoxious.

The skill comes in when to employ one or another for effect. In this case, I was striving for a mild attempt at the latter.

I did well enough to elicit a response. Thank you. :)

No offense Joss,... but I'm getting tired of your avatar. :D

I don't think it really fits either. LOL

To be clear and also to be sure there are no hard fealings I was simply answering the question. I am always open to be critiqued. The main point for me is I feel knifemakers can help me learn HOW to make my knives better. Collectors can tell me what they want or what they like. I do value the opinions of all the people who contribute to B/F. There is a great bunch of people here! But in the end only I can decide how to apply their ideas to myself.

If I never make it to the main stream and I am never hip thats fine with me.
I make knives for me. If others like my knives thats great if not oh well.
There are many paths one can take in the knifemaking world and I say to each his own. There are those folks who would do well to advance their carear by paying close attention to what the collectors of that genre want. While others may find themselves believing there is no market for their work.
As I said before let them talk about what they like, thats great! I am sure that I can learn by reading about it. As for the direction I want to go I do not believe I will be recieved well there. I will learn technique and develope my own style!

Also I will ask again what is the knifemakers gallery for? Cant I continue to post in the gallery? Why dont the collecters spend more time posting there? Some do and thats great others dont, and at least to some degree it is aparent why this is.

I guess I dont feel it needs to change. There is a forum for everyone. I dont feel all makers should court the few collecters who are most outspoken. If anything I would invite more of the collectors to visit the knifemakers gallery. That is where I post my work to be viewed and critiqued. I hope the collectors continue to speak freely about what they like and dont like. I will read it and enjoy reading it. I have read many nasty sounding things that I feel are 100% true.

I am willing to admit my opinion is worth what you paid for it.:D

We proposed this idea here in the knifemaker's forum several years ago, Tai. In a generally encouraging climate like this, it is frequently difficult to get good constructive feedback that can lead to serious improvement.

Recognizing this, we proposed having a special sub-forum where one posted expecting to have the knife dissected and constructive improvements offered. It did not gain the approval of the BF owner.

I still think it would be a great idea to have a place where both beginner and skilled knifemaker could receive serious, non-fractious input from both knifemaker and knife buyer to improve their craft, free of any devisiveness.

My proposal is simpler: the custom knife forum is the forum to discuss custom knives, and therefore any picture posted there is open to discussion & feedback (normal rules of politeness apply). The gallery is just to show pictures, and if one doesn't want one's picture commented, then they should post there. There is no need for yet one more forum.

This is a serious response, no jest this time:

Wasn't it stated repeatedly in the recent Custom forum that "lesser knives" couldn't be expected to gain notice by the collectors and elicit constructive comments?

You cannot offend me Tai, but I don't care one little bit whether you like my avatar or not. Not sure why you think it doesn't fit - even if you know what this avatar is about (do you?), you shouldn't presume to know me, therefore you shouldn't presume to know whether it fits.

More or less, yes.

Then why say anything?

I'm starting to understand even better certain things.

There - one more good use for the ignore list. Goodbuy Tai! :D

Yes. One truism that has emerged from these threads is that Tai Goo is an offensive and annoying waste of time. Thanks for the memories Tai, you have earned a spot on my ignore list.

Ahhh, GOO GONE.

You really should get to work. I m sure the orders are pouring in.

Mr. Goo, with all due respect.....I think you are trying to bait Joss at this point. Why? If it is humor you are attempting, I, for one am missing it......I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

IMHO the discussion in this thread has been handled with politeness and respect thus far, don't you think we should keep it that way?
