I think Spyderco should not take all the blame for the lack of interest on the Foundry, I bet there's a few prototypes that hit all the good points mentioned on this thread... BUT; ultimately, the CEO of the CS decides on what the final version will be,... It was made exclusively for the Foundy's employees in the very beginning, it was mainly to show case what their company is about- Steele and lots of it. I would treat it more like a souvenir type of knife that if I am an proud employee, I would carry one. For hard use which this knife is capable of... Most do wear gloves.
I don't mind the price if it, but the slipperiness do turn me off only because I have sweaty hands.... I wish the logo was cut out, that would be cool to see the partial blade in the closed position and would reduce the weight and add tones of traction like the pie in the sky.
Other than that I think The craftsmanship of the knife is spot on, manufacturing tolerance is superbly tight, design was excellent for a show and tell souvenir knife. (This is what Spyderco is about and this is why they choose to have Spyderco produce the knife)
My guess is the knife didn't take off among the foundry employees and they came to an agreement to let Spyderco market the excess inventory to the public- let's be honest, all the tooling and material cost required to produce these aren't cheap even if you produce them in bulk
